ABSTRACT
Background: Diagnosis of laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR) currently used as a gold
standard is pH monitoring examination. However, it is still far from ideal criteria due to its sensitivity reported only in 50% to 80%, and approximately 12% of ENT patients can not tolerate this procedure. The latest study to detect LPR is by determining the existence of pepsin within the larynx using immunoasssay method (ELISA).
Objective: To determine the differences in levels of pepsin between patients with
LPR and non LPR.
Materials and Methods: An analytic cross-sectional study was conducted on 20 patients with LPR (values of RSI >13 and RFS >7), and 20 patients with non-LPR (values of RSI <13 and RFS <7) as the comparison, from February 2016 until Desember 2016. Physical examination and laboratory tests were enroled for all samples.
Results: A highly significant correlation was observed between the LPR group and non LPR group, with levels of pepsin obtained was p=0.024 (p <0.05), in which levels of pepsin in LPR group were higher (mean values 0.783 ± 0.393) compared to non LPR group (mean values 0.591 ± 0.216).
Conclusion: The examination of pepsin in saliva can be used for the diagnosis of LPR.
