ABSTRACT
Hafidh Mahzum. C1313007. 2016. The Analysis of Indirect Commands in The
Film Entitled “The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty”. English Department Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Sebelas Maret University.
The research focused on the use of politeness strategies employed by characters in film The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty. It was conducted to find out the types of politeness strategies used by the characters in the film The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty, to reveal the factors influencing the use of politeness strategies in the film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty and to identify the way the characters respond to the commands in the film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
The research was a case study of pragmatics study which employed descriptive qualitative method. I used total sampling technique in collecting the data. I took all dialogues containing indirect commands employed by the characters in the film The Secret Life Of Walter Mitty.
The results showed that in delivering indirect commands in the film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, the characters employed three politeness strategies, they are: negative politeness, positive politeness, and off record. The use of politeness strategies in the film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was classified into eight negative politeness strategies, seven positive politeness strategies, and two off record strategies. There are two factors that influence the characters to employ commands with negative politeness strategies. They are the social status and domain of the situation. The social factor is a factor affected by social status of the film.
In the analysis above, I found that 15 data are successfully responded by other characters while 2 data are not responded. In general, most of commands which were uttered by the characters using the politeness strategies were successfully applied in the film The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.
