ABSTRAK
Skripsi ini berjudul “Fungsi dan Makna Patung Dewi Kwam Im pada Vihara Avalokitesara bagi Masyarakat Tionghoa di Pematang Siantar”, merupakan penelitian lapangan atau field research. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui Fungsi dan Makna Patung Dewi Kwam Im pada Vihara Avalokitesara bagi Masyarakat Tionghoa di Pematang Siantar. Penyusunan skripsi ini menggunakan metode deskriptif dengan pendekatan kualitatif. Data yang didapat pada skripsi ini bersumber dari observasi, wawancara terhadap para informan yang mengenal Dewi Kwam Im dalam agama Buddha, buku, jurnal, skripsi, dan website. Penulis menggunakan teori fungsionalisme Bronislaw Malinowski dan teori semiotik Roland Barthes dalam mengkaji skripsi ini. Hasil yang didapat dari penelitian ini adalah Fungsi Patung Dewi Kwam Im pada Vihara Avalokitesara bagi Masyarakat Tionghoa di Pematang Siantar adalah sebagai religi, idendtitias kebudayaan dan pariwisata, Sedangkan maknanya adalah menghormati orang yang berada pada ketiga golongan yaitu Buddha, Dhamma, dan Sangha.

The title of thesis is "Function and Meaning of the Statue of the Goddess Kwam Im on Avalokitesara Vihara for the Chinese community in Siantar". This thesis is a field research. The purpose The purpose of the research is carried out to determine the function and meaning of the Statue of the Goddess Kwam Im on Avalokitesara Vihara for the Chinese community in Siantar. Methods of research conductedin this paperis aqualitative researchmethod is descriptive. The author used the theory of functionalism Bronislaw Malinowski and Roland Barthes semiotic theory in reviewing this thesis. Source of data obtained from observation, interviews with informants who knew the Goddess Kwam Im in Buddhism, books, journals, theses, and websites. The results obtained from this thesis is the Goddess Statue function Kwam Im on Avalokitesara Vihara for the Chinese community in Siantar is as religion, culture and tourism idendtitias, while its meaning is to respect people who are in all three groups, namely the Buddha, Dhamma, and Sangha.
