ABSTRACT
This research was aimed to evaluate and assess the students‟ competency
in writing skill at secondary level in the English Language that focusing in four major content areas: word completion, syntax, comprehension, and tenses/grammar. The target population was 15 students in tenth grade in SMA Negeri 4 Purwokerto and SMA Muhammadiyah 1 Purwokerto in the academic year 2016/2017. They were taken using simple random sampling. An achievement test consisting of different items was develop to assess the students‟ competency and proficiency in sub- skills of writing such as word completion, syntax, comprehension, and tenses/ grammar. Mean score was used to analyze the
students‟ competency in each sub-skills. The Chi-square was applied to compare
the students‟ proficiency in sub-skill of writing in public and privat schools. The
overall performance of all the students‟ was better in all aspect of sub-skills. The analysis, based on the chi-square, revelead only one significant difference
between the students‟ performance in public and privat schools that is in word completion, whereas for the other aspect there is not difference between students‟
performance in public and privat schools.
