Bauxite Exports Stopped, Domestic Absorption Still Low

NDONESIA's uptake of bauxite ore is still quite small compared to export sales. Of the production of around 25 million tons of bauxite ore in 2020, only 1 million is intended for the domestic industry.Executive Director of the Indonesian Mining Association (IMA) Djoko Widajatno said that the production of bauxite ore with a grade of 42 percent in 2020 will reach 25 million tons.
“Alumina production of 1.1 million tons produces 51,000 tons of chemical grade alumina [CGA]. Then domestically supplied with 27,000 tons of smelter grade alumina (SGA)," he told Bisnis, Sunday (2/13/2022).
In fact, he estimates that the demand for bauxite ore will increase in the next few years. Especially with the presence of electric vehicles. Djoko believes that he will be able to increase the demand for bauxite in the domestic market.
A study by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) noted that every electric vehicle contains at least 0.25 tons of aluminum. Commodities come from refined bauxite, to obtain alumina. Then it is re-melted so that it becomes aluminum.
In addition, in the refining process, at least 2-3 tons of bauxite are required to produce one ton of alumina.
As for 2019, bauxite ore production in Indonesia is around 19 million tons. About 16.1 million tons were exported while domestic bauxite reached 2.9 million tons.
Then 2.9 million tons of bauxite are processed to produce 1.1 million tons of alumina.
Ekspor Bauksit Disetop, Serapan Dalam Negeri Masih Rendah

“Produksi alumina 1,1 juta ton menghasil- kan chemical grade alumina [CGA] 51.000 ton.
Kemudian 2,9 juta ton bauksit diolah hingga memproduksi 1,1 juta ton alumina.
Daily News Update Page 4
This product is exported to the global market as much as 1.08 million tons and only 46,000 tons for domestic needs.
Indonesia then had to re-import around 458,000 tons of alumina to produce 250,000 tons of aluminum.
On the other hand, domestic demand for aluminum exceeds 1 million tons. This means that the industry must re-import about 748,000 tons of aluminum.
Djoko assesses that the industry can actually increase absorption, but is not yet confident. As a result, all government programs run half-heartedly.
"So we are half-hearted, on the one hand the industry has not succeeded in attracting investment, overall the down- stream results, either coal or minerals, are waiting for the offtaker who is waiting for the results." he said. Editor : Pandu Gumilar
Alhasil seluruh program pemerintah berjalan setengah hati.
Editor : Pandu Gumilar

Coal Price Again Touches the Sacred Level of US$ 220/Ton
Arif Gunawan, CNBC Indonesia
T
HE PRICE of Newcastle's thermal coal futures contracts this week soared and touched the psychological level of US$220/ton, following the still thin world coal supply amid the expansion of coal-based power plants in China.
On Friday (13/2/2022), the price of the most active coal futures contract for March delivery closed up 2.44% to US$ 220/ton.
This level was the highest since October 19, 2021, which at that time was at US$
220.9/ton.

Harga Batu Bara Kembali Sentuh Level Keramat US$ 220/Ton
Arif Gunawan, CNBC Indonesia
H
ARGA kontrak berjangka (futures) batu bara termal Newcastle sepekan ini melesat dan menyentuh level psikologis US$220/ton, menyusul masih tipisnya pasokan batu bara dunia di tengah ekspansi pem- bangkit listrik berbasis batu bara di China.
Pada Jumat (13/2/2022) harga kontrak futures teraktif batu bara pengiriman Maret ditutup melesat 2,44% ke US$
220/ton.
Daily News Update Page 5
During the week, price rallies occurred in the first two trading days, namely Monday and Tuesday, and the last trading day. The correction in two days this week was not enough to nullify the strengthening of prices for a week.
Therefore, on a weekly basis, the price of Indonesia's mainstay commodity was calculated at 6.49% to the level of 200/ton.
However, the weekly rally was not enough to break the previous week's correction which reached 8.69% from US$ 226.25/ton to US$ 206.6 at the end of last week.
The trigger for the surge in coal prices was none other than the aftermath of the coal export ban policy announced by the government last month. During the current year, 44.98% was due to Indonesia's export ban. At the end of last year, coal in the ICE Newcastle (Australia) market was only US$ 151.75 per tonne.
Indonesia is currently a major exporter of thermal coal in the world with an export volume of 400 million tons (2020), or equivalent to 40% of the export of coal for this type of power plant circulating in the global market-according to data from the International Energy Agency (IEA).
Although the policy has been suspended, the Chinese government on Wednesday summoned coal producers, urging them to boost supply amid fears of tight global coal supply this year.
The Chinese government is currently continuing to boost the construction of a Steam Power Plant (PLTU). The latest, coal-based power plant is in Zhejiang Province, which is operated by Zhejiang Energy Group with a power capacity of up to 2 gigawatts (GW).
Previously, Chinese President XI Jinping had stated that the Bamboo Curtain country would begin to reduce the use of coal. But that...
dari US$ 226,25/ton menjadi US$ 206,6 di penghujung pekan lalu.
Sebelumnya, Presiden China XI Jinping memang menyatakan Negeri Tirai Bambu bakal mulai mengurangi penggunaan batu bara. Namun itu...

But that will only happen in 2025.
However, China is estimated to still be aggressively building coal-fired power plants.

Namun itu baru akan terjadi pada 2025.
Namun, China diperkirakan masih bakal gencar membangun pembangkit listrik bertenaga batu bara.

Daily News Update Page 8
"We achieved a higher annual production than what we previously targeted, this was due to the delay in the execution of the rebuilding of electric furnace 4 which was originally scheduled to start in November to December this year," said Febriany Eddy, CEO and President Director of INCO.
In detail, in quarter IV/2021 INCO produced 17,015 tons of nickel matte, lower than quarter III/2021 which was 18,127 tons. However, it was higher than the same period in the previous year, which was 16,445 tons.
Meanwhile, overall throughout 2021 INCO recorded nickel matte production of 65,388, 9.48 percent lower than the total 2020 production of 72,237.
"Production in the fourth quarter of 2021 is around 6 percent lower when compared to the production volume realized in the third quarter of 2021," added Febriany.
Meanwhile, on a yoy basis, the production base in the fourth quarter of 2021 was 3 percent higher than the production in the fourth quarter of 2020.
In his research, Henan Putihrai Sekuritas analyst Andreas Tarigan initiated a buy recommendation for INCO with a target price of Rp 5,600 per share.
The recommendation, he continued, is in line with INCO's plan to develop an HPAL facility with Sumitomo Metal Mining.
"We see that the HPAL development step can pave the way for INCO to enter the global electric vehicle ecosystem," he wrote in his research quoted on Thursday (10/2/2022).
Furthermore, INCO plans to increase its ferronickel (FeNi) production capacity by 73,000 tons of nickel in ferronickel (Tni) with the inauguration of the RKEF plant project. The project will involve Xinhai and Tisco as strategic partners of INCO.

Andreas assesses that INCO also has a strong balance sheet and capital structure.
This is indicated by the net cash position and low debt levels.
"With that, INCO can execute large projects in the midst of high fuel prices," he added.

Editor : Hafiyyan
Performance of Issuers Supporting Mining Services Supported by Increases in Coal

C
OAL prices are still smoldering. This trend of increasing coal prices is used by a number of mining-supporting issuers to improve performance in 2022.Citing Bloomberg, the price of ICE Newcastle coal for delivery in April 2022 closed at US$ 195 per tonne on Friday (11/2). Even though at the end of January 2022, the price of coal was still at the level of US$ 181.95 per ton.
One company that can take advantage of this increase in coal prices is PT Samindo Resources Tbk (MYOH). The company raised the target volume of overburden (OB) removal this year.
MYOH targets overburden removal volume of 38 million bank cubic meters (bcm) in 2022. This target is an increase compared to last year's OB realization of 36.4 million bcm.
Head of Investor Relations at Samindo Resources, Ahmad Zaki Natsir, positively welcomed the increase in coal prices.

ARGA batubara masih membara.
Menurut dia,...

According to him, it is very likely that the price of this energy commodity will remain high.
Moreover, currently there is a conflict between Ukraine and Russia which will affect the supply of natural gas for independent power producers (IPP). "So most likely coal will be an alternative option," explained Zaki to Kontan.co.id, Sunday (13/2).
Not only mining contractor issuers, the increase in coal prices also brings blessings to issuers providing transpor- tation services. Solid coal prices helped boost the performance of PT Dana Brata Luhur Tbk (TEBE).
Director of Dana Brata Luhur Hendy Narinda Dewantoro said the realization of barging volume last year reached 6,974,822 tons. This number rose 97%
from the realization of the volume of transportation in 2020 which was only 3,532,000 tons.
Meanwhile, for this year, Hendy projects the volume of transportation to be at 7 million tons.
"This projection is driven by coal prices which are estimated to be quite high in 2022," Hendy said to Kontan.co.id, recently.
To achieve the target set, TEBE will budget a capital expenditure (capex) of around Rp 41 billion. This capex will be used by TEBE for the rejuvenation of its truck fleet.
The smoldering coal price also brings optimism for issuers selling heavy equip- ment. PT United Tractors Tbk (UNTR), for example, targets to be able to sell 3,700 units of heavy equipment this year. The projection is up 23.3% from Komatsu's sales target set last year, at 3,000 units.
Solidnya harga batubara turut mengerek kinerja PT Dana Brata Luhur Tbk (TEBE).
Direktur Dana Brata Luhur Hendy Narinda Dewantoro mengatakan, realisasi volume pengangkutan (barging) tahun lalu men- capai 6.974.822 ton.
Daily News Update Page 11
This target is set by considering the demand from all sectors, especially from the mining sector and the construction sector.
The subsidiary of PT Astra International Tbk (ASII) recorded sales of Komatsu heavy equipment of 2,950 units until November 2021. This number shot up 99.18% of Komatsu's sales realization in the same period the previous year of 1,481 units.
Sales of heavy equipment are dominated by the mining sector, which is 53%, followed by the construction sector at 25%, the forestry sector at 12%, and the agribusiness sector at 10%.
To support business, this year UNTR has allocated a capital expenditure of around US$ 750 million, all of which comes from internal cash.
Similarly, PT Intraco Penta Tbk (INTA) also boosts its business target this year. INTA has set a sales target of 409 units of heavy equipment or a value of Rp. 348 billion.
This target is an increase of about 39% in value and an increase of about 17% in terms of units compared to sales during 2021.
Intraco Penta's Corporate Secretary, Astri Duhita Sari, did not deny that high commodity prices also contributed to INTA's sales.
"The sales level of INTA's heavy equipment for commodities, including crude palm oil (CPO) and coal, will increase considerably in 2022," Astri explained to Kontan.co.id, Friday (11/2).

The news from Indonesia seems to be effective in boosting coal prices. Last week, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources announced it was delaying the granting of operating permits for more than 1,000 coal, tin and other minerals.
The reason for the delay was the delay in submitting the 2022 work plan.
This policy is temporary. Permits will be given again after the government accepts the work plan for this year. Miners are given 60 days.
"If during that period the company still has not submitted its 2022 work plan, it will be given stricter sanctions, namely revocation of permits," said Sony Heru Prasetyo, Head of the Mineral and Coal Information Working Group at the Ministry of EMR.
This development has once again become a sentiment that greatly affects the global coal market. You see, Indonesia is the world's largest coal exporter. If supply from Indonesia drags on, then prices at the world level will certainly be affected. CNBC INDONESIA RESEARCH TEAM (aji/aji)
Penambang diberi waktu 60 hari.
TIM RISET CNBC INDONESIA (aji/aji)
Bauxite Exports Stopped, RI Prepares to be Sued by the
European Union

NDONESIA must prepare for rejection from the European Union as the govern- ment plans to stop exports of bauxite ore in mid-2023.Indonesian Mining Association (IMA) Executive Director Djoko Widajatno said that a number of countries and regions had the potential to protest as a result of the government's plan.
Ekspor Bauksit Disetop, RI Siap- siap Digugat Uni Eropa

Daily News Update Page 15
“It can be protested by the European Union. They want to make a lot of money.
China and Japan also need bauxite," he told Bisnis, Sunday (13/2/2022).
Even so, Djoko believes that the govern- ment can overcome this problem. This is not the first time the European Union has filed a lawsuit. In recent years, the Blue Continent has also filed a lawsuit with the World Trade Organization (WTO) because the government has banned nickel exports since 2020.
On the other hand, IMA assesses that it is time for Indonesia to process its own resources from upstream to downstream.
Even so, he assessed that domestic businessmen were not confident in processing their own bauxite.
“Actually, I could, but I was never confident, so everything only went half- heartedly. So now we look at the existing process," he said.
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) noted that Indonesia's bauxite reserves are around 4 percent or 1.2 billion tons of the total global reserves of 30.3 billion tons.
This figure is enough to place Indonesia as the country with the sixth largest bauxite reserves in the world. Other countries are Guinea 24 percent, Australia 20 percent, Vietnam 12 percent, Brazil 9 percent and Jamaica 7 percent.
Domestic bauxite reserves are also estimated to be depleted in the next 92 years, taking into account that no new smelters have been added since 2020.
Previously, President Joko Widodo had said that he would stop bauxite exports starting at the end of 2022. This step was taken by the government to increase the added value of domestic resources.
“Bisa diprotes oleh Uni Eropa. Mereka ingin untung banyak.

"We will continue to stop the export of raw materials for bauxite and then copper, then gold, then tin," the President said, Monday (12/27/2022).
Jokowi's removal will continue to be accelerated by the government to provide added value for the country. In addition to labor absorption, the existence of down- stream industries also has an impact on state income.
“Those who want to take, we can no longer buy raw materials. This means that like it or not, you have to establish an industry in the country. So that we no longer export raw materials."
However, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) said that the plan would be realized by June 10, 2023 at the latest.
"IUP holders sell washed bauxite with levels above 42 percent until June 10, 2023," said Director General of Mineral and Coal at the Ministry of EMR, Ridwan Djamaluddin, during a press conference, Thursday (20/1/2022). Editor : Amanda Kusumawardhani

Silver strong: Record demand forecast in 2022
Henry Ballard
T
HE SILVER Institute has forecast global silver demand to rise to a record 1.112 billion ounces in 2022 as traditional and green technologies increase its use. These established and emerging uses in industrial fabrication are expected to rise by 5 per cent this year, while use in jewellery and silverware could rise by 11 and 21 per cent respectively.
The news comes as the Perth Mint announced record silver sales for January, selling 2,387,165 ounces of silver in minted product form.
Perth mint general manager of minted products Neil Vance said the total was the second highest monthly total, behind September 2015 when 3,349,557 ounces were sold.
Daily News Update Page 17
“This January we released our 2022 Australian Koala silver bullion coin series and also took first orders for our one kilo Lunar Tiger coins,” Vance said.
“Both releases are globally popular and contributed heavily to an especially pleasing month, which also reflected a build-up of demand during the Christmas and New Year period at the end of 2021.”
The uptake of solar panels and their components was seen as a big factor in silver’s continued strength in 2022, according to the Silver Institute.
“The outlook for silver’s use in the photovoltaic (PV) industry remains bright. Government commitments to carbon neutrality have resulted in a rapid expansion of green energy projects,” the Institute stated.
“As a result, even with ongoing efforts to reduce silver loadings, record PV installations are expected to lift silver demand in this segment to an all-time high in 2022.”
The news comes at a good time for Alien Metals, which recently discovered bonanza silver grades of 36 kilograms per tonne at its Elizabeth Hill silver mine in Western Australia.
The drilling results far exceeded expectations of the long dormant mine, which once averaged grades of 2195 grams of silver per tonne (g/t) before it was mothballed in 2000.
While a restart of Elizabeth Hill remains uncertain, the Silver Institute projected a rise of 7 per cent in global silver supply to a six-year high of 1.092 billion ounces in 2022.
Some Australian mines contributing to this figure will be 29 Metals’ Golden Grove copper- gold-zinc-silver mine in WA; South32’s Cannington silver-lead mine in Queensland; and Glencore’s Mount Isa zinc-lead-silver mine, also in Queensland.
Global copper market to face deficit in 2022 despite projected production growth - report
By Vladimir Basov
A
CCORDING to Norilsk Nickel (Nornickel), global copper market in 2021 was fairly balanced as the copper demand was recovering on the back of the global economic rebound, while the US and China announced multitrillion infrastructure plans.Global copper demand was driven by the rising importance of the ESG agenda, as governments and investors worldwide began to pay closer attention to copper intensive technologies, such as renewable energy, transport electrification and the reduction of GHG emissions, which resulted in a decrease in exchange stocks and price spikes.
Nornickel said that as a result, the average LME copper price in 2021 increased 51% y-o-y to USD 9,317 per tonne.
The company added that on the supply side, despite some issues in copper mining, the production of refined metal increased sufficiently enough to meet the higher demand.
Daily News Update Page 18
As for 2022, Nornickel said that the copper market is expected to be in a mild deficit of 82kt in 2022 as the global consumption will be growing on the back of further post-COVID global economic recovery and increasing investments in renewable energy and transport electrification.
“Although we forecast that mine production will grow in 2022, the increase of refined metal output will not be sufficient to match the demand, in our view,” the company noted in a report. “In our opinion, the copper market will remain generally balanced in the near term, running a deficit of less than 1% of the global consumption (or 82 kt).”
Nornickel said that in 2022, global copper consumption is expected to grow 3% to 25.1 Mt as the major economies continue their recovery after the global pandemic and ongoing roll-out of copper-intensive clean energy technologies and decarbonization plans.
In 2022, global mine production is expected to increase by 4% to 22.3 Mt owing to the ramp- up of new mines in DRC and Peru and also due to the expansion of existing projects.
Nornickel also expects that refined copper production will grow by 2% to 25 Mt in 2022.
The company stressed that in the longer run, copper demand will greatly benefit from the race for carbon-neutrality that will require massive upgrade of the backbone energy infrastructure.
Importantly, the company estimates that currently, the number of probable copper mining projects is too small to meet the upcoming demand that might shift the market into a sizeable deficit, if no new projects are started in the next 2-3 years.
Norilsk Nickel is a diversified mining and metallurgical company, the world’s largest producer of palladium and high-grade nickel and a major producer of platinum and copper. The company also produces cobalt, rhodium, silver, gold, iridium, ruthenium, selenium, tellurium, sulphur and other products.
China's domestic coal prices soften amid NDRC's stable price guidance
Author: Suyash Pande, Rituparna Nath, Pritish Raj / Editor: Adithya Ram

HINA's domestic coal prices edged lower after a guidance by top economic body National Development Reform Commission, or NDRC, which stated that domestic coal prices will be considered stable below Yuan 900/mt [$141.59] at ports, sources told S&P Global Platts Feb.11.
Sources said major coal producers in China are being asked to sell the fuel below the market price now. Prices of Qinhuangdao 5,500 kcal/kg NAR were heard at Yuan 1,120/mt FOB [$176.08] Feb. 11 against Yuan 1,135/mt FOB heard Feb. 9, according to sources. The price of 5,000 kcal/kg NAR was heard at Yuan 995/mt FOB against Yuan 1,005/mt FOB heard Feb. 9.
Daily News Update Page 19
Meanwhile, Chinese traders expect demand for Indonesian coal to weaken if the guidance by NDRC is followed, sources said. "It will affect Indonesian coal buying interest first if Chinese domestic coal prices fall below Yuan 900/mt," a Chinese trader said.
However, the challenge is to lift domestic production to maintain sufficient stockpiles at power plants and stability in prices, sources said.
"Given the 20% coal price rally YTD (year-to-date), we think the Chinese government will likely enforce 'supply boost' + 'price control' as a combined measure to cool down coal prices from the current elevated level," a note by Morgan Stanley on Feb. 10 said.
NDRC guidance on prices
According to market sources, NDRC in a meeting Feb. 10 reiterated its view that domestic coal prices are stable below Yuan 900/mt [$141.59] at ports and guided the sellers to sell below the level.
Traders said that the officials want to ensure stable coal supply and prices during the Winter Olympics to build a foundation for economic growth in January-March this year and said there is a need to increase coal supply quickly.
The NDRC noted that efforts to raise output earlier led to a daily production of 12 million mt.
According to China-based market sources, the government believes that coal stockpiles at power plants are at a record-high level of over 160 million mt.
Earlier, NDRC had capped the port price of 5,500 kcal/kg NAR at Yuan 1,000/mt ($157.32/mt) FOB following a recent price surge, Platts reported Jan. 28.
The note said that domestic coal price at pit head was stable below Yuan 700/mt, unchanged from the level announced Jan. 28.
Sources said that the NDRC was especially observing coal prices in mines of Shaanxi, Yanchang Petroleum, China Coal, Shaanxi Coal, Fugu, Matai Trench, Jinlaoyuan and Erlin Rabbit.
NDRC could not be immediately reached for a comment.
Indonesian supply tightness
Chinese domestic coal prices had risen sharply after Indonesia imposed a ban on coal exports in January. Even though the ban was eased by Jan. 21, producers have been focusing on fulfilling backlogs, leading to supply tightness for Indonesian coal.
"They (Chinese traders) want coal but they are not showing it because the market is already hot and if they enter now, the prices will shoot up even further. We don't expect Indonesian coal prices to be impacted by NDRC in the short term," an Indonesian trader said.
The price of 5,000 kcal/kg GAR has risen from $93/mt FOB Dec. 31 to $116.05/mt Feb. 10, Platts data showed.
Market sources said that stockpiles at Qinhuangdao stood at 5.01 million mt Feb. 11 against 4.01 million mt Jan. 28, just before the Lunar New Year holidays. The stockpiles at the port stood at 4.74 million mt Dec. 31.

Mining boom could be on the way for Australia, with record-breaking exploration spend
ABC Pilbara/By Michelle Stanley
N
EW analysis shows Australia's mining industry is experiencing conditions similar to the boom of 2010, with record-breaking exploration spending and capital raising.Total exploration expenditure hit a record $974 million in the fourth quarter of 2021, almost double the exploration spending in the same period a year earlier.
Total capital raising also broke a record in the quarter, increasing more than 70 per cent to
$3.17 billion compared to 2020.
The figures come from analysis of cashflow reports of 733 resource companies by independent research agency Austex.
Warren Pearce, chief executive of the Association of Mining and Exploration Companies (AMEC), said people had a fear of using the word "boom".
But he said it was a fitting description of the current environment, with the industry experiencing a sustained period of substantial growth.
"We're going through a period that's been as good as we've seen probably in 20 or 30 years,"
Mr Pearce said.
"We're at the sort of numbers that were at the height of the last mining boom back in 2010, 2012."
Lessons learnt from past bust
In West Australian towns like Port Hedland, Karratha and Newman, the mining boom of 2010 brought soaring wages and house prices — the subsequent bust shocked the region.
But Tony Simpson, chief executive of Regional Development Australia's Pilbara office, said lessons had been learnt and local economies had diversified.
"Now what you're seeing is rare earths, some copper and other types of minerals that are coming in, and also now there's hydrogen coming in there as well," Mr Simpson said.
"The more we can diversify, we're not relying on one commodity price or two. Relying on six commodity prices certainly helps level out the field.
"If you can avoid the boom-bust cycle, that'll be fantastic."
Pandemic positive for exploration
The record-breaking expenditure comes at a time when skills and equipment shortages had negatively impacted on industries across the world, but Mr Pearce said the pandemic had the opposite effect on exploration.
"The last two years in the mineral exploration industry and the mining industry, they've been exceptionally positive in terms of the economic outputs, the production outputs, and indeed the profits and dividends to shareholders," he said.
Daily News Update Page 21
"In terms of capital raising, we really haven't seen much like this before … so we've done incredibly well."
When the WA border re-opened, Mr Pearce expected the industry would grow further.
"Once we're able to see more people, more skilled workers come into the state to support both the mining industry and the exploration industry, you'll see a further acceleration of that growth," he said.

Global iron ore production up 5% in 2021 as industry recovers from COVID-19 impacts - report
By Vladimir Basov
A
CCORDING to the preliminary data released by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), estimated global iron ore production in 2021 was 2,600 million tonnes of usable ore, which is 5.3% higher than a year ago (2,470 million tonnes).USGS said that increases in production, shipments, and trade of iron ore in 2021 were due to recovery from the effects of the global COVID-19 pandemic, which lowered steel production and consumption globally in 2020.
With 900 million tonnes of usable iron ore mined in 2021, Australia is the largest iron ore producing country, followed by Brazil (380 million tonnes), China (360 million tonnes) and India (240 million tonnes).
Largest iron ore producing countries, million tonnes of usable ore. *Preliminary estimate. Source: USGS.
According to the report, overall, global prices trended upward to an average unit value of
$178.27 per tonne in the first 9 months of 2021, a 64% increase from the 2020 annual average of $108.92 per tonne and a 90% increase from the 2019 annual average of $93.85 per tonne.
Daily News Update Page 23
Based on reported prices for iron ore fines (62% iron content) imported into China (cost, insurance, and freight into Tianjin Port), the highest monthly average price during the first 9 months of 2021 was $214.43 per tonne in June compared with the high of $155.43 per tonne in December 2020, USGS said.
The lowest monthly average price during the same period in 2021 was $124.52 per tonne in September compared with the low of $84.73 per tonne in April 2020. The prices trended upward owing to a reduced supply of higher grade iron ore products and demand for higher grade ore to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in steel production, the agency noted.
