---BioInquiry 2 - Mac version

Copyright © 1995-2003 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. All rights reserved.

---NOTE: DO NOT 'Close' the Edugen server without exiting the BioInquiry program first. You may lose data from your study session. You may EXIT the BioInquiry program from any page in the program. When you want to exit the program, simply click on the Exit button inside the Navigation Icon Bar. This button terminates your current program session, logs you out of the program and restores your original AppleTalk and TCP/IP settings.

System Requirements

---Minimal configuration:

PowerPC G3 233 MHz

64 MB RAM

4x speed CD-ROM drive

800 x 600 resolution, 256 colors Mac OS 8.1 and above

Note: using BioInquiry on a Macintosh with the above minimal hardware configuration requires virtual memory to be turned on and at least 128 MB of virtual memory reserved.

Preferred configuration: PowerPC G4 450 MHz

128 MB RAM, Virtual memory turned on 16x speed CD-ROM drive

800 x 600 resolution, thousand colors Mac OS 8.6 and above

NOTE: We recommend running BioInquiry with your screen resolution set to 800*600. The

program will run with your resolution set 800*600, but some important features will not fit into the program window.

Program Installation Requirements:

Running BioInquiry will require the following: Netscape Communicator v4.7X

Apple Java Machine MRJ 2.1.4 Shockwave Player

(2)

---Your BioInquiry installation procedure depends upon the way your computer is connected to the Internet.

a) If you are not going to connect to the Internet or if you already do have a permanent Internet connection, BioInquiry’s configuration will rely upon a standard Netscape browser and its plug-ins to handle all BioInquiry media types.

b) Otherwise, if you have a dial-up Internet connection, BioInquiry’s configuration will include a specially tailored version of Mozilla browser that will operate irrespective of your Internet

connections. The Installer procedure will put a copy of a 'personalized' browser on your computer and equip it with all necessary plug-ins for BioInquiry’s operation. This BioInquiry configuration precludes any problems that can arise from any dynamic network settings changes that take place each time when a dial-up Internet connection is established and/or closed on your Macintosh. 1. Insert BioInquiry into a CD-ROM drive attached to your Macintosh. The disk window will open to show the program icons to be installed for running the BioInquiry program.

2. Double-click on the BioInquiry Installer icon to install the program. Follow the instructions appearing on your screen and choose (or create) the folder for the program's runner and some other internal resources required to provide its operation.

After the program has been installed, it checks whether all applications necessary for its operation (Netscape Communicator v4.7, Apple Java Machine MRJ 2.1.4, QuickTime 5 and Shockwave Player) are installed on your Macintosh. If not, it will warn you about those that have to be installed.

3. Double-click on the appropriate Install icon to install the required application(s) and follow the instructions that appear on your screen.

4. It is highly recommended to set up Preferred Size of Netscape's memory partition up to 32000K after its installation.

5. To start the program double-click on the BioInquiry icon on your desktop. You can also start the program by clicking on the BioInquiry folder that is located in the Wiley folder on your hard drive. 6. To allow for the successful running of the BioInquiry program on Macintosh, the TCP/IP

communication protocol must be installed. The program handles most situations automatically, but if you experience difficulties please contact your system administrator or refer to the

troubleshooting section below.

7. If you connect to the Internet through a proxy server, you need to configure the proxy to work with the program, as follows:

a. From the Edit menu of Netscape, choose Preferences. b. In the Advanced category and choose Proxies.

c. Choose Manual proxy configuration and click on the Configure or View button. d. Under "No proxy for" type 127.0.0.1

Network Installation

---The BioInquiry CD-ROM can be used on a network by several students simultaneously. ---There is no limit to the maximum number of users.

(3)

Installation:

1. Create a new folder on the network server called “BioInquiry”. 2. Make a copy of the whole BioInquiry CD-ROM to this folder.

3. Run the "MAC Network Setup Configuration" application in the BioInquiry folder. This application configures the BioInquiry Installer for network installation.

4. Share the BioInquiry folder to make it accessible to all networked computers. Client computer

---Installation:

1. Open the shared BioInquiry folder on the network server.

2. Run the BioInquiry Installer application to install the program on the client computer. A 'BioInquiry' alias will appear on the desktop.

Running the program:

---HP Background Extension

---Edugen cannot be installed when the HP Background extension is enabled. This causes the following error message:

'Installation on the active startup disk "..." cannot take place while another application is running. Please quit HP Background and try again.'

The solution is to turn off the HP Background extension as follows (the extension cannot be turned off using Extensions manager):

1. Open your Extensions folder (located in the System folder on your Hard drive).

2. Move the HP Background extension onto your desktop. Make sure that the extension is moved, not copied.

3. Restart your computer. HP Background will be disabled. 4. Install Edugen.

5. Restart your computer.

6. Put the HP Background extension back into the Extensions folder. 7. Restart your computer again.

Slow performance

---AppleTalk must be active for correct operation of the Edugen application.

If AppleTalk is inactive on your system, please activate AppleTalk and choose Connect via "Remote Only".

Connection failure when working online

---Access to the Edugen server is interrupted if your dial-up connection drops in the middle of an online session. The following error message then appears:

"Netscape's network connection was refused by the server 127.0.0.1." The solution is to quit the application and relaunch.

The application can not find Netscape 4.7

---Netscape QuickTime plug-in troubleshooting:

The basic MIME settings tune-up procedure (Netscape - specific)

After QuickTime plug-in has been installed under Netscape, some errors in MIME settings

definition can occur on both Mac and PC platforms. If you get a plug-in error or if nothing happens while you are trying to open your video file, you should check the Netscape plug-in properties. To do this, you should:

1. Choose Preferences in the Netscape Edit menu.

2. Choose Category: Navigator in opened Preferences window. 3. Choose Applications in the Navigator sub-tree.

4. The Applications window will open. Find QuickTime Video in the Description column and click the Edit button. Then make sure the following data is written in opened Edit Type window (if some data is wrong or missing, change it to match with the following sample) -

Description : QuickTime Video MIME Type: video/QuickTime Suffixes: qt, mov

Handled by:

Plug-in: QuickTime Plug-in 5

Alternative MIME settings tune-up procedure (QuickTime native)

If the above procedure does not work for some reasons, an alternative route may be used instead. The following takes effect on both Mac and PC platforms.

1. Open the QuickTime player.

2. Use the pull-down menu Edit->Preferences->Connection Speed. This invokes the "QuickTime settings" window.

(6)

6. Press "OK", close the "QuickTime settings" window and quit the QuickTime player if needed.

---Problems setting up the Edugen server

---The Edugen server requires particular TCP/IP settings to run. ---These are adjusted automatically by the Edugen program for all common TCP/IP configurations. However, the program may not be able to deal automatically with new or unusual TCP/IP options. In this case please consult the

Troubleshooting folder on the CD-ROM for instructions on setting of the required Edugen configurations manually.
