A Thesis: English Education Departement, Faculty of Education and Teacher Training, Sebelas Maret University Surakarta.
This study is aimed at (1) investigating the quality of the existing materials used in English teaching and learning activity at one VHS in Sragen, and (2) developing an inquiry-based ESP supplementary material to teach and learn English at one VHS in Sragen.It is a Research and Development (R & D) study. There are two stages in conducting this study. The first is exploration stage which consists of field study (document analysis) and needs analysis. The second is development stage which consists of designing the prototype, the experts validation, trying out the prototype, revising the prototype, and resulting the final product. In analyzing the documents,the researcher uses checklist of eight criteria of material evaluation proposed by Cunningsworth whereas in obtaining the students’ needs, the researcher conducts interviews to two nursing teachers and two professional nurses working at hospital and delivers questionnaires to nursing students. In addition, the data from development stage is taken from observation, questionnaires, Forum Group Discussion and validation form. Those data are further analyzed using percentage and the interactive model proposed by Miles and Huberman.
The result of book analysis reveals that “Buku Bahasa Inggris untuk SMK Kelas X” and “Modul Bahasa Inggris untuk SMK Kelas X” have seven weaknesses to teach English to the nursing students of VHS. Meanwhile, the
result of needs’ analysis shows that the students need English materials specifically designed for nursing. Based on the result of exploration stage, the researcher decided to design an ESP supplementary coursebook for nursing students based on inquiry-based language learning (IBLL). In the development stage, the researcher designed the prototype based on the result of exploration stage and needs analysis. Then, it is validated by two experts in TEFL to get the feasibility. The researcher revised the prototype based on the validation from the experts. After it was revised, it was tried out to nursing students. In the end of the try out, the researcher conducted FGD and delivered questionnaires to know the
students’ responses toward the prototype. The result of FGD and questionnaire were used to revise the draft prototype into the final product.
It is hoped that the ESP for nursing coursebook can complete the two existing material and make the English teaching-learning for the nursing students better. The researcher also hopes that the inquiry-based language learning can make the learning more meaningful and the use of media and ICT can be improved through the use of the book.

Tesis: Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris, Fakultas Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan, Program Pascasarjana, Universitas Sebelas Maret Surakarta.
Tujuan penelitian ini adalah (1) menginvestigasi kualitas buku “Buku Bahasa Inggris Untuk SMK Kelas X” dan Modul “Modul Bahasa Inggris untuk
SMK Kelas X”untuk mengajar bahasa Inggris siswa kelas X jurusan keperawatan di salah satu SMK di Sragen, dan (2) mengembangkan materi ajar ESP tambahan untuk siswa kelas X jurusan keperawatan dengan menggunakan metodologi pembelajaran berbasis inkuiri di salah satu SMK di Sragen. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian Research and Development (R & D). Ada dua tahapan yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini. Tahap pertama adalah tahap eksplorasi yang terdiri dari studi lapangan (analisis dokumen) dan analisis kebutuhan. Sedangkan tahap kedua adalah pengembangan produk yang terdiri dari pengembangan prototipe, validasi ahli, uji coba prototipe, perbaikan prototipe dan pembuatan produk akhir.
Hasil dari analisis bukumenunjukan bahwa “Buku Bahasa Inggris Untuk SMK Kelas X” dan “Modul Bahasa Inggris untuk SMK Kelas X” yang digunakan
untuk mengajar Bahasa Inggris memiliki tujuh kekurangan. Sedangkan, prosedur pengembangan materi ajar tambahan ESP adalah: 1) peneliti melakukan analisis kebutuhan siswa dengan mewawancarai dua guru keperawatan dan dua perawat profesional yang bekerja di rumah sakit, serta membagikan kuisioner kepada siswa keperawatan. Hasil analisis kebutuhan menunjukan bahwa siswa keperawatan membutuhkan Bahasa Inggris yang spesifik. Sedangkan dari hasil dari tahap eksplorasi, peneliti memutuskan untuk mendesain buku ajar tambahan ESP untuk siswa keperawatan berbasis inkuiri.
Dalam mengembangkan buku ajar, peneliti mendesin prototipe berdasarkan hasil dari tahap eksplorasi. Kemudian, prototipe tersebut dievaluasi oleh penguji ahli dibidang TEFL. Peneliti kemudian merevisi prototipe dari hasil validasi oleh penguji ahli. Dan untuk mendapatkan hasil yang lebih baik, peneliti mengujicobakan prototipe kepada siswa kelas X jurusan keperawatan pada salah satu SMK di Sragen. Untuk mengetahui respon siswa dan mengevaluasi penggunaan prototype yang dikembangan, Forum Group Discussion (FDG) dan pendistribusian kuisioner dilakukan. Dari hasil tersebut, peneliti melakukan revisi terhadap protitpe kemudian menghasilkan produk akhir.
