ABSTRACT
The purposes of this research are to describe the types of neologism and techniques used by the translator in translating neologism in the book entitled Start Me Up! and to know the quality of the translations in terms of accuracy and acceptability. It is a descriptive-qualitative research which uses two kinds of data. The first data are from the English version of the book Start Me Up! and its translation with the same title. The second data are from a questionnaire fulfilled by three raters. This research used purposive-sampling technique to select the data. Two methods were used to collect the data; content analysis was obtained to collect the first data from source and target text and interview by using the close and open-ended questionnaire to gather data of accuracy and acceptability.
The result of the analysis on the type of neologism show that there are 5 types of Neologism comprising old word with new sense, new coinages, collocations, derived wordand acronym found in the book. The analysis on the translation techniques found 9 translation technique comprising Established Equivalent (18.2%) Pure Borrowing (38.2%) Amplifications (2.7%) Linguistic amplification (1.8%) Generalization (2.7%) Literal translation (1.8%) Description (0.9%) Couplet (30 %) Triplet (2.7%).
The result of the analysis on the translation accuracy show that there are 97 data (89.15%) considered as accurate translation, 10 data (8.25%) considered as less accurate translation, and 3 data (2.70%) considered as inaccurate translation. pure borrowing technique contributes the high level of accuracy, while generalization technique contributes the low level of accuracy. There are also 89 data (82.13%) considered as acceptable translation, 18 data (12.52%) considered as less acceptable translation, and 4 data (6.35%) considered as unacceptable translation. pure borrowing + established equivalent technique contributes the high level of acceptability, while generalization and amplification technique contribute the low level of acceptability.
