In this life, peoples have needs from the basic needs to the higher needs. People
needs can change from time to time. Therefore, they must choose what needs that must be
fulfilled first. Usually they tend to fulfill the major need first before others. There are many
needs that peoples try to fulfill, for example the needs of food, clothes, safety, house, and
love. Maslow as quoted in Hjelle and Zeigler (1992: 448) believed that people are
motivated to seek personal goals that make their lives rewarding and meaningful. Maslow
depicted the human being as a “wanting organism” who rarely reaches a state of complete
and total satisfaction. It is characteristic of human life that people almost always desire
something.
Peoples need love or we need give and receive of affection. Love can make them
happy, sad, angry, disappointed, and sometimes they can laugh and cry because of love.
Thus peoples try to find their right in getting real love.
In this era peoples can find easily the article, fiction story, poems, novel, or movie

B. Underlying Theory
1. Notion of Humanistic
Humanistic is an approach psychology that maslow and others viewed as viable
alternative to psychoanalysis and behaviorism (Hjelle and Ziegler, 1992:486). Maslow
state that Humanistic theory is emphasizing as it does the uniqueness of the person and
the potential for self-direction and enhanced functioning has tremendous appeal for those
who share his optimistic view of humanity (Hjelle and Ziegler, 1992:441).
2. Aspect of Humanistic: Hierarchy of Needs
Maslow proposed that all human needs are innate or instinctoid and that they are
systematically arranged in an ascending hierarchy of priority or prepotency figure 10-1 is
a schematic representation of this need-hierarchy conception of human motivation. The
needs are, in order of their priority: (1) physiological needs; (2) safety and security needs;
(3) belongingness and love needs; (4) self-esteem needs; (5) self-actualization needs, or
the need for personal fulfillment.
3. Notion of Belongingness and Love
a. Belongingness
Belongingness is the quality or state of being an essential or important part of
accepted by others. For the example, when we have a feeling of love to someone or
something, we hope that we can be accepted by someone we love.
b. Love
According to Chaplin (1968: 281) love is a strong feeling full of affection for
someone usually accompanied sexual component. In other hand, love is eroticism for
looking satisfaction to an object.

end of the story she always can eat and drink well, Jecca is always able to enjoy a
luxurious and expensive food. It shows that Jeccas’s psychological need has been very
satisfied.
“everything, Jecca said. ‘I miss dinner last night” (Deveraux, 2012: 92)
“Kim said as she opened the refrigerator and pulled out a quiche, salad, olives, asparagus in a vinaigrette sauce, and bottles of raspberry-flavoured sparkling water” (Deveraux, 2012: 52) “As soon as Jecca opened the door to her apartment, she smelled bacon and some kind of bakery goods. c. Love and Belongingness Needs
Jecca can easily fulfill her love and belongingness need from her friends and her
father. But her boyfriend needs some sacrifice to fulfill love and needs. Jecca Layton has
a good friend named Kimberly Aldredge who always gave support and praise her career.
Kim as a third major character always supporting her in any situation gives her love as a

Talk to Kim about…. Well, about everything in life” (Deveraux, 2012: 2) “all right,” he said. “when do you want to leave?” (Deveraux, 2012: 4)
“he was proud that she was an inch taller than his five foot six” (Deveraux, 2012: 4) “Joe let her to couch and handed her the last of the tissues from the box” (Deveraux, 2012: 390)
I am sublimely happy, Jecca though as she woke up nex to Tristan. (Deveraux, 2012: 354)
“I didn’t quit being a doctor,” he said, “but I moved to where you are. If Joe can give up his hardware store, I can give up my town.” (Deveraux, 2012: 400)
d. Self Esteem Needs
In this story Jecca can not fulfill self respect because she often thinks badly herself.
“I’m not sure,” Jecca looked at Kim in question. (Deveraux, 2012: 100)
