The research aims to discover the types of translation strategies which were found

in apparenticeship students’ translation products and to assess the students’

English-Indonesian translation quality by asking five English students to rank the students’ translation products. This research employs the theory of translation strategy proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet (2000) and Bani (2006). The criterias

that are used to assess the apparenticeship students’ translation products are

proposed by Barnwell (1980 as cited in Larson, 1984). Descriptive Qualitative study approach by Cresswell (2002), was used as the research design. 172 selected phrases were analyzed by the research. The result reveals that the most frequently used translation strategy is Calque (45.35%), then it was followed by Borrowing

(29.65%), Adaptation (8.14%), Equivalence (6.40%), Substitution (4.66%),

Generalization (2.33%), Transposition (1.74%), and Inclusion of Explanation

(1.74%). The result also shows that (77.78%) of the text was cut by the translators to eliminate the information that is too detail and unimportant, then to remove the information that had been covered by the previous sentences, and to cut the sensitive issue that may cause misconception to the readers. Most of the participants who assessed the translation products thought that the translation products were good and understandable. However, the participants thought that the translation products were not natural since the translators used too much

Penelitian yang berjudul An Analysis of Translating Strategies on Apparenticeship Students’ Translation Products in Pikiran Rakyat Newspaper Company ini bertujuan untuk menemukan jenis-jenis strategi penerjemahan yang ada pada hasil terjemahan mahasiswa PLA dan untuk menilai kualitas terjemahan Inggris-Indonesia dari para mahasiswa PLA dengan meminta lima mahasiswa Bahasa Inggris untuk menilai hasil terjemahan para mahasiswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan teori strategi penerjemahan yang dikemukakan oleh Vinay dan Darbelnet (2000), dan Bani (2006). Kriteria yang digunakan untuk menilai hasil terjemahan para mahasiswa PLA adalah kriteria yang dikemukakan oleh Barnwell (1980 yang dikutip dari Larson, 1984). Pendekatan deskriptif kualitatif yang dikemukakan oleh Cresswell (2002) digunakan sebagai metode dari penelitian ini. Ada 174 frasa terpilih yang dianalisis oleh penelitian ini. Hasil penelitian ini menyatakan bahwa strategi penerjemahan yang paling sering digunakan adalah

Calque (45.35%), kemudian diikuti oleh Borrowing (29.65%), Adaptation

(8.14%), Equivalence (6,40%), Substitution (4.66%), Generalization (2,33%),

Transposition (1.74%), dan Inclusion of Explanation (1.74%). Penelitian ini juga menemukan bahwa (77.78%) dari teks telah mengalami proses pemotongan oleh para penerjemah untuk menghapus informasi yang terlalu detail dan tidak penting, kemudian juga untuk menghilangkan informasi yang sudah terangkum dalam kalimat-kalimat sebelumnya, juga untuk memotong isu sensitif yang dapat menyebabkan kesalahfahaman bagi para pembaca. Hampir semua partisipan yang menilai terjemahan tersebut menyatakan bahwa hasil terjemahan para mahasiswa PLA itu bagus dan dapat dimengerti. Namun, para peserta menyatakan bahwa hasil terjemahannya tidak alami karena para penerjemah terlalu sering menggunakan strategi penerjemahan Calque dalam menerjemahkan sebuah teks.
