PENDAHULUAN

The research takes the scheme of

Penelitian Unggulan Udayana in the

This research has the purpose to contribute to the development olf tourism in the regency of Klungkung, especially in the island of Nusa Penida through conducng the research on etno-linguisc and etno-historic related to the names of the tourisn object in the context of contemporary ecotourism. Conducng the research on tourist desnaons in Nusa Penida is a challenging acvity considering that it is difficult to reach those places. However, this does not reduce the intenon of the visitors to visit those places. The interest of the visitors to visit Nusa Penida is supported by the good transportaon from the maiknland of Bali to Nusa Penida, either from Sanur Beach, Kusamba, or Padang Bai. The incredible development of tourism has the tendency to bring big impact on the atude of the visitors or the local people towards the sustainability of culture and local tradion. To reduce or even to eliminate the negave impact of the sustainability of the natural environment that has become the aracon to the visitors, we have the iniave to do the research on the tourism objects that have been known, known but rarely visited for various reasons, and the ones not yet known, the meaning of the names of the places which are usually related to the names of the villages where the places are situated, and the myth or legend accompanying the existence of the object or temple found over there. - DESKRIPSI SOSIOKULTURAL-HISTORIS -

- DESKRIPSI SOSIOKULTURAL-HISTORIS -

Crystal bay which is also called Penida beach has been frequently visited by many people for its sunset. Culturally and historically this place has a stor y about Batu Jineng, that is the stone which is right in front of the beach. At the top of this rock there is a Hindu temple. On the right side (seen from the beach) there is rectangular-shaped hole. According to the story, the position of the rock was not there. It used to be a door and located at the beach. One day, the supernatural power of the people in Sakti was challenged. If the people were able to kick the stone, their power will be admitted. Then the stone was kicked to the present place.

There is another legend about this place. At the entrance to the beach there is the temple of Segara Penida that becomes the initial history of Nusa Penida. The one worshipped there is Ida Batara Lingsir Ki Dukuh Jumpungan. At first, he meditated on Batu Jineng, and he had pewisik (message from God) that he should build a peling gih there which is called the temple of Segara Penida which is now has become the temple Sad Khayangan Segara Penida. Actually this temple is the first place for purification for the Hindus visiting Nusa Penida because there are the pelukatan (purification) Sudamala and Campuhan there.

Inside the temple there is a pool which is called Taman temple, and on its right and left sides there are barrels. In some occasions the water in the barrels spurts out (spurting water) which can only be seen by special people (the ones having high spirituals). The water is believed to be able to be used for purificationand open the aura.

According to a member of Sakti village whose name is Putu Ngurah Ardika, through his spiritual eyes, he can see that there is a goldfish in the sea that belongs to the invisible one in which its squama and tail have got golden colour.

It is said that when people do not do pekelem (sacrifice in the for m of black chicken/duck, four leg ged animals) ever y year, there will be human sacrifice.

Sakti was the only part of Nusa Penida that did not surrender when Bali wanted to occupy Nusa Penida. Even the supernatural power of the Sakti people was able to destroy the soldiers of Bali. Thus, the power of the people in Sakti village has become well known and the village is known as the defense gate of Nusa Penida.

Cr ystal Bay is located in the village of Sakti, sub-village Sakti, 18 km to the east from port Sampalan and it takes 45 minutes by motorcycle. The condition of the road to this location is badly damaged and full of gravel so that it is accident prone if people are not careful. Despite of the bad condition of the road, this beach is visited by many people due to its easy access to the beach. They only need to walk on a flat land for few steps to reach the beach with clear water. This beach is flanked by two green hills and in front of it, about 50 meters across the sea, there is a stone called Batu Jineng. At the top of this stone, there is a Hindu temple. Nama Tempat

Gamat Bay/Pura Gamat/ Pura Segara Gamat di Nusa Penida, Kabupaten Klungkung, Propinsi Bali

Status

GAMAT BAY/PURA GAMAT/PURA SEGARA GAMAT

Name of the Place

Gamat Bay / Gamat Temple / Segara Gamat Temple, Nusa Penida, Klungkung Regency, the Province of Bali

Status

The beach is not yet known as the tourism object, but some parts at the area of the beach (deep water), have been known as diving sites.

Linguisc Descripon Gamat ‘big sea cucumber’

Gamat is related to the words

- gamet /gαmət/ which means coon. The people of Sak village used to have a lot of coon trees.

- gamet /gamét/ which means the job which is quickly done.

As the mes goes by the pronunciaon of the two words become gamat and the temple in the area is called Segara Gamat temple.

In the southern part of Gamat Teben temple there is an estuary and it is believed that when people wash themselves with the water, and then pray in the temple, all their diseases will be gone. Then they can proceed to cleanse themselves in the northern part to ask for purification

It is said that the sand at Gamat beach used to be sudamala sand, meaning that in the northern part of Gamat Tebén (Tebén ‘downstream’) temple, the colour of the sand was white and in the southern part the colour was black. A child, who cannot walk at the time – he should have been able to walk - is taken to this beach to make him/her walk. The curing procedure is by putting the legs of the kid under the sand. This location is very sacred. However the colour of the black sand is now fading due to abrasion but the different colours can still be seen and the people of Nusa Penida still bring their children to the beach especially on kajeng kliwon or kuningan. In the Gamat Teben temple there is a well of which water tastes brackish so that it is only be used for bathing and drinking water for cows. In the eastern part of this temple, there is a temple called Gamat Dulu/Hulu (Dulu/Hulu ‘upstream’). There is also a well but with fresh water in this temple so that it used as the water resources for the people there. If gamat means sea cucumber, the ability of the sand to cure children is in line with the ability of the sea cucumber to cure diseases, among others are curing wounds, building the immune system of the body, binding free radicals (active molecules that is responsible to produce various diseases), decrease cholesterol, curing the infection in the digestion tract, neutralizing sugar in blood, curing ulcer, curing high blood pressure, while one of the reasons why a child cannot walk in time is because there is a hypersensitive disturbance in the digestion tract causing sickness, vomiting and constipation.

According to the 1983 monograph, the Gamat temple is related to gamet /gam t which means cotton and gamet /gamét/ which means the work which is quickly done. Later on the pronunciation of those two words becomes gamat /gαmαt/ and the temple in that area is called Segara Gamat temple. The god worshipped in that temple is Ida Batara Segara who has followers in the form of midgets usually called Jero Wayan Cabol (cabol

‘midget’) who is very powerful. He is the one who guard the temple and the surrounding area.

There is something strange that frequently happens in Gamat temple, that is every rainy season there are small statue-like shapes appear on the wall of the temple. Those shapes which are called pratime disappear when the rainy season is over. It is said when those pratime appear, there will no pests attacking the plants. People should present pekelem in every temple festival in Gamat temple to be always protected.

In the long run, the bird became starving and finally he entered the forest where he found water melon. He ate it. It turned out there was a woman there. She was so scared that she hid herself in the foot of the bird that took her to fly. The frightened woman swore to God, saying that wherever she touched the ground, she would live there. The bird then evidently perched on the area which is now known as Pasih Uug or Broken Beach. In her being alone, she got pewisik (message from god) that she had to climb a tree and drink the water in the branch grooves. Aer drinking the water, the woman got pregnant and gave the birth to the people living in the village in Pasih Uug. To commemorate the water, a temple called Telaga Sak temple was built.

The child then plugged a sck into the soil and asked if the villagers could plug it out. Proudly, the villagers said that it was easy to do it.
