ABSTRAK
Latar belakang dari penelitian ini adalah pentingnya sumber informasi bagi mahasiswa khususnya dalam proses penulisan skripsi. Penting bagi mereka untuk memilih tipe sumber referensi yang akurat, terpercaya dan terkini sesuai topik penelitiannya. Untuk itu banyak yang seharusnya dipertimbangkan dalam menentukan sumber yang tepat agar dapat mendukung dan mempertahankan argumen yang dituliskan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui (1) tipe-tipe sumber referensi serta (2) tahun dipublikasikannya sumber tersebut yang digunakan oleh mahasiswa bahasa inggris periode 2015-2016 (3) melihat kesalahan-kesssalahan penulisan referensi dalam thesis mereka. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif dengan menggunakan document analysis. Ada tiga puluh satu thesis yang dianalisa dalam penelitian ini. Pengambilan sampel menggunakan teori dari Gay dan Airasian (2000:134). Ada 589 total sumber referensi ditemukan. Data menunjukkan bahwa ada beberapa tipe referensi yang digunakan dengan rentan publikasi sumber ±10 tahun. Tipe-tipe sumber referensi yang digunakan antara lain book (76%), journal (11.3%), thesis (6%), artikel dari website/webpage (6.6%) dan dictionary (0.5%). Untuk tahun publikasi sumber ditemukan dari tahun <1995 hingga tahun 2016. Hasil penelitian ini adalah: (1) Tipe referensi yang lebih banyak digunakan adalah buku, (2) Rata-rata mereka menggunakan sumber yang dipublikasikan pada tahun 2006-2010. Dari hasil penelitian tersebut, peneliti dapat menyimpulkan bahwa mahasiswa bahasa inggris periode 2015-2016 sudah menggunakan sumber yang bervariasi, namun masih banyak kesalahan dalam penulisan daftar pustaka.

INTRODUCTION
Students’ as learner at a college should make thesis as last academic writing to finish their study. In make a thesis, every student should have strong ideas and support by theory from expert. It means that every student should have many sources and have right reference too. In making reference, students’ can follow guidance book from college to make their
reference suitable with the format that made by college.
In relation with that, it is really essential for the students to follow guidance book when they are going to write thesis. It is also important to has new sources and choose a sources that suitable for their topic. In English Language Teaching Education Program of STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat, the researcher finds
2 out that most type of research used by students’ is education research. Many undergraduate researchers are interested to research about educational research. The data shows that English department have 155 theses was discussing three types, it was about education, linguistic and litterature during in 2015-2016.
From the data above, education was the most type of research that students’ had choosen. In conclusion, if there are most undergraduate students researched about type which similar, there are many things which be different must be know. It makes the researcher to be interested to know what their types of sources used in their theses. Then, the researcher also did this research in English department reading room. Based on the explanation above, the researcher is curious to know the type and year publication of sources used by the English students of STKIP PGRI Sumatera Barat in their theses factually.
The purposes of this research are to describe types of sources that students use in writing thesis, years of sources that students mostly use in writing their thesis and kinds of students’ error in writing reference. Based on the researcher observation, many of the students face the same problems in writing references. The problems are in writing reference and
choose suitable sources. in writing reference may students’.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
In this research, the researcher used descriptive as research design. The researcher chooses this design because the researcher wanted to analyze and describe types and year of sources in student’s thesis. According to Gay and Air Asian (2000:275), “descriptive research is used to investigate the variety of educational problems and issues”. It meant that the characteristic of descriptive research was to describe the situations or conditions actually.
According to Gay and Airasian (2000:134), “descriptive research common use sample 10% – 20% from the participants.” In this research, the researcher took 10 % from student’s thesis. The theses were 176, and the researcher used 20 % of all the theses. 20 % from 155 is 31 theses.
In this research, the researcher analyzed the data used several steps. The steps followed the theory from Arikunto (2010:282) as follow: (1) Classify, (2) Frequency, and (3) Interpret.
1. Classify
After collecting the data, the researcher read the data that took from English Department Reading Room. There were 31
3 theses to be analyzed. Next, the researcher classified in two classification; type of sources and year publication of sources.
2. Frequency
In this step, the researcher got the frequency type of sources and year publication of sources. To answered the research question, the researcher made the frequency about the data one by one. In making frequency, the researcher analyzed it first and made the data in to table according to every types.
3. Interpret
The last step was interpreting and representing data. The researcher interpreted and represented the data about each type of sources and year publication of sources one by one. It used the table analysis that had been made by the researcher.
FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION
To answer the research questions, the researcher has analyzed students’ references. findings of this research as follow:
1. Types of sources that students’ mostly used in their thesis. The type was book. There were 76%.
2. The most year publication of sources in students’ thesis was sources from 2006-2010. It was 32%.
3. Students’ error in writing reference. Every students’ have similar error in writing reference. Based on the researcher analysis, it found that many students’ have same error in writing reference. It saw from students’ reference like

4 there were no parentheses on year publication, the title was not italic, author name did not writing as well as APA format.
All of the findings and discussions that were found above gathered by the source of data. For first question about “What are types of sources that students mostly use in writing their thesis? And “What are years of sources that students mostly used in writing their thesis?”. The researcher found that book was type of sources the most dominant used by English students that graduated on 2015-2016. For second question about “what the publication year are used by them in their references in writing thesis?”, The researcher found that English students in period 2015-2016 used book, journal, thesis/dissertation, article in website/webpage and dictionary, averagely in publishing between 2006 until 2010. This distance was good enough took as reference sources because of the information still can be used ±10 year from this year, not old literature, and valid but it will be better last 5 year.
Third, for the last research question “what are the types of error that made by students’ in writing reference?, many students’ have some problem in writing reference. First problem, students’ did not write parenthesis in publication year of sources. Second, the title of book and
journal were not italic. Third, the students’ wrote the entire author’s name. Last, the students’ did not make the city of sources. It can be concluded that, almost of students’ have difficulty in writing reference and it need to be solved. It was to increase the quality of students’ reference and writing thesis.
