STUDENTS‟ PERSPECTIVES ON ACTIVE STUDENTS‟ ROLES 1 Many researches have been done to find out the factors that cause the students‟ silence but there is very few that looks carefully to the existence of active students in the classroom as one factor that affects students‟ silence. This study investigates the students‟ perspectives on the existence of active students as factor that affects their classroom participation level. There were 20 participants consisting of students from class year 2007, 2008, and 2009 taken from two advanced classes, English Language Teaching Management (ELTM), in the English Department of Satya Wacana Christian University. They were chosen based on their answers in the questionnaire asking about how they classified themselves as students (active, passive, or other answers); and question asking about what things affected their classroom participation. Those who answered that their classroom participations were affected by the existence of active students were then interviewed using unstructured interview method to answer the research question: What effects does an active student have in a particular classroom
toward the other students’ participation level in the classroom? The study found
that the existence of active students in the classroom would make their classmates (1) reluctant to speak; and (2) motivated to speak, due to various reasons like personal background and culture; personality of the students; and the quality of ideas shared by the active students.
