CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A. Background of the Study
English is one of the languages that is used widely in the world. It functions
as a means of communicating ideas, thoughts, opinions, or feelings, and becomes
the first foreign language in Indonesia. This foreign language is considered as an
important language in absorbing and developing sciences, technology, culture
and arts, and increasing overseas relationship. Because of the necessity English is
taught as a compulsory subject at junior high school which functions as a means
of developing the students’ capability in technology, science, and culture and
arts. Therefore, the students can grow up and develop themselves to be skilful
human beings. It is also expected that the students will have an Indonesian–
identity and are ready to participate in national development.
In Indonesia, English language is taught since elementary school till
university. Its goal is to prepare the Indonesian people to face the modern era.
Now English is taught in the private school and state school based on the
curriculum from education department.
Teaching English in junior high school in some areas are the beginning
because the students have not been taught yet in their elementary school. So the
teacher needs some methods to transfer the knowledge to the students. Teacher
must be professional in teaching English because some students feel afraid of
English lesson. So, the students cannot master English lesson. For this reason the
teacher has an important role. The quality of teacher and other elements that are
involved in educational process such as text books, laboratories, libraries,
curriculum, school buildings, teaching media, method of teaching English, and
other facilities are being improved to increase the quality of education. As an
internal part, the development involves the head master, teacher, student, and
many other elements. As an external part, the school has to and connects to
another institution like society, government, labor world, and etc.
The English teaching - learning process in MTsN Model Sumberlawang
has been based on Competency-based Curriculum and this school applies the
new curriculum or Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan (KTSP) that in the
(KTSP) there are not any significant differentiations. KTSP created is based on
the government instruction. It creates to complete the curriculum and to increase
the education quality. The difference between Competency-based Curriculum
and (KTSP) is just from the model of Colum in the lesson plan. As the model of
school, MTsN Model Sumberlawang is completed with the language laboratory
and library by the government and qualified teacher.
The teacher must be professional in the teaching, which means the teacher
can make good quality of school and the excellent students. According to the
quality development and education relevance that aims to develop the quality
graduate or education result itself, teacher must have a professional ability,
personal competence, and social competence because the teacher is a figure for
their students.
In teaching English teacher have various methods. They will apply their
MTsN Sumberlawang is located in a strategic place. Completed with many
facilities and qualified teacher that their fields are concerned with their levels or
they teach based on their competence. The facilities are not completed like other
MTsN or junior high school in Surakarta regency. To achieve the objective of
teaching English as a foreign language the English teacher teaches the students of
MTsN Model Sumberlawang by using some methods. With an autonomic system
the school has their own competence in management and to develop the quality
of education so the teacher is the most responsible to the education quality
development. Based on the phenomenon above, in this research the writer wants
to conduct a research entitled “IMPLEMENTATION of the TEACHING of
ENGLISH at MTsN MODEL SUMBERLAWANG”
B. Problem Statement
Based on the background above, the writer formulates the problem:
1. How is the implementation of the teaching of English at MTsN Model
Sumberlawang as the model of school in Surakarta Regency?
2. What are the strengths and weaknesses in implementing the method?
C. Limitation of the Study
In this research, the writer has limitation of the study to make the research
easier. The writer focuses on the implementation of the teaching of English to the
first year students of MTsN as a model of school in Surakarta regency, in
2006/2007 academic year, and the strengths and weaknesses in implementing the
D. Objective of the Study
1. The objective of the study is to describe the implementation of the teaching
of English at MTsN Model Sumberlawang.
2. Know the strengths and weaknesses in implementing the English teaching.
E. Benefit of the Study
There are two major benefits in this research; they are practical and
theoretical benefits.
1. Practical Benefit
For the teacher of MTsN Model Sumberlawang the result can be the
reflection of his/her teaching. It is also inform the implementation of KTSP
(School-based Curriculum) to government.
2. Theoretical Benefit
The writer hopes that the result of the research will enrich the theory of
teaching English to the students in the model of school.
F. Research Paper Organization
This research paper consists of five chapters. Chapter I is introduction,
dealing with background of the study, problem statement, limitation of the study,
objective of the study, benefit of the study, and research paper organization.
Chapter II is review of related literature. It concerns with the previous
research, learning and teaching language, method of teaching English, procedures
Chapter III is research method. It describes the type of research, subject of
the study, object of the study, data and source of the data, method of collecting
data, and technique for analyzing data.
Chapter IV is research finding, and discussion of the finding.
