Tech Support Notes for Interactions Products – Version Number 1.1

Detection Problem for Sun JRE 1.4.1

Description:

For Interactions products with version number 1.1, in Windows XP with IE 6.0 if they have only Sun JRE 1.4.1, which is supported, the program start up will not correctly detect the Sun Java, unless the user is logged in to the system with an administrator login. Consequently, when they start up the system, they get prompted to install the MSJVM (Microsoft Java Virtual Machine), and the program will not start up until they do so.

Resolution:

1) If the user logs in as a local administrator (that is an administrator for the XP system itself), they will not experience this problem. However, most institutions will not let students use an administrator login so this is not a viable solution.

2) The user will have to install the MSJVM. This should not cause any problems for the users system and programs that use the Sun JRE. However, if the user is at all concerned that this will cause problems for programs or Web sites that use the Sun JRE, then they can disable the MSJVM in Internet Explorer as follows:
