xii ABSTRACT
Fedrick Dwi Wahyutama. C0312028. 2017. An Analysis of Translation Techniques and Quality in Terms of Accuracy and Acceptability of Linking Verb in The Novel Entitled Nineteen Eighty-four Written by George Orwell. Thesis. English Department. Faculty of Cultural Sciences, Sebelas Maret University.
The research focuses on the analysis of translation techniques and quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability of linking verbs in the novel entitled
Nineteen Eighty-four written by George Orwell. The objectives of the research
are: 1) to find out the translation techniques that are used by translator in translating linking verbs in the novels entitled Nineteen Eighty-Four, 2) to find out the translation quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability of linking verbs in the novel entitled Nineteen Eighty-Four; and 3) to find out the impact of translation techniques to the translation quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability of linking verbs in the novel entitled Nineteen Eighty-Four.
The research was conducted by using a descriptive qualitative method. The data are linking verbs and the translation quality assessment done by the raters. There are 337 data of linking verbs divided into three categories based on Frank’s (1972) theory namely common used linking verb, verb of perception and verb-adjective combinations that express a state. The sources of data are the novel entitled Nineteen Eighty-four and its translation in Indonesian language. The other sources of data are the three raters. The purposive sampling technique was used to choose the informants.
The results of the data analysis show that there are two types of technique used, single technique and multiple techniques. The techniques are namely transposition, established equivalent, reduction, variation, discursive creation, amplification, generalization and literal translation.
The translation quality analysis in term of accuracy shows that: in common used linking verb, 288 data (91.4%) are accurate, 10 data (3.2%) are less accurate, and 17 data (5.4%) are inaccurate. In verb of perception, 10 data (83.3%) are accurate, and 2 data (16.7%) are inaccurate. In verb-adjective combinations that express a state, 10 data (100%) are accurate. Then, in the term of acceptability shows that: In common used linking verb, 277 data (87.9%) are acceptable, 32 data (10.1%) are less-acceptable, and 6 data (2%) are unacceptable. In verb of perception, 12 data (100%) are acceptable. In verb-adjective combinations that express a state, 8 data (80%) are acceptable, 2 data (20%) are less-acceptable.
Established equivalent and transposition techniques are the techniques producing translations with high level of quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability. Reduction technique is the technique producing translation with low level of quality in terms of accuracy and acceptability.
