INTE;RNATIONAL COIY.IMIT~EE ON PROGRAMS

AND

MUSIC

It is difficult for District chairmen to estimate fully the success of the primary objective of the

1960

Committee on Programs and Music because of the failure of many Dtviqion s,.nd Club chairmen to respond. Nevertheless, scattered reports indicate re~sonable progress on PROGRAM SHARING has been made.

As

a committee we believe much .still remains to b~ done to bring PROGRAM SHARING to its widest possible usage and that the benefits are obtained will be worthy of the effort. We suggest more emphasis be given to education in Programs and Music in Pi~trict and Division training conferences not only for the purpose of creating more ci~b interest but also to foster general Kiwanis aims in citizenship responsibility.

The

committee feels that there are tremendous possibilities in good programming for that qu~li ty of foresight and ci vie purpose which will endow more Kiwanians with the enlightenment necessary for leadership in a period of great change. In this direc- tiop., for instance, "Kiwanis clubs are Featuring" has been making a simple reference to Oanst:ttution Week in its yearly outline for program planning. We believe some thpught and space might be given in this pub~ication to the broad and interesting possibiiities of the philosophy of the Constitution or even to the Bill of Rights.

So much has been written on national puxpose or the lack of it that Constitution Week, as a special week in Kiwanis might aid considerably in an interesting educa- tion on pa~t tradition and its relationship to the future.

Again

we

suggest that a simple and inexpensive kit as described in our June report might add impetus to the sharing of good programs and to a better understanding of their purpose.

In general we have received good cooperation at all levels and if we have not suc- ceeded ~n givin~ too much to our fellow Kiwanians we have, ourselves, benefitted gre~tly by the experience of endeavoring to do so.

ANNUAL REPORT OF

1960

INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE ON PUBiic AND BUSINESS AFFAIRS-CANADA 1. Appraisal of the functioning of your committee members.

Pete Lyle and Ed Mallek worked spasmodically throughout year., mostly on CQQ~

No evidence of any work being done by Hal Fraser and Ken Hibbert.

2. What. problems., if any., developed in your follow-up and promotion?

Insofar as Western Canada is concern~d I had no communication whatsoever from their District Chairman. Evidently all my mail stopped at his desk., also true in certain respects of Pacific Nort~west.

3.

What suggestions can you offer for the guidance of the next year's committeeZ Bypass D:Lstrict Committees and take emphasis programmes directly to Club Com- mittee i.e. Canada-U.S. Goodwtll., C.Qp Otherwise work through District Chair- man and Lieutenant Governors. O.QoM, District Cha:Lrman suggests that more notice should be given of special projects i.e. Oanada-U.S. Goodwill Week., etc.

4.

What promotion was done with the distr:Lct oh~irm~n?

Positive concrete suggestions for ~ctivities were sent to each District Chairman monthly. Copies of these were forwarded to General Office.

5.

What additional aspects of traini~g woul~ you suggest to help the International Committee Chairman get ready for his assignment?

Some training in preparing good bulletins for Committee and for distribution to clubs. This is a selling job anq ony mu~t u~e the hard sell throughout to get the story across.

6.

What are your comments regarding the $trengths and weaknesses involved in the formation of your committee programs as related to such things as timing., method used, useability of the Logboqk?

Personally do not think it is necessary to bring this Committee to Chicago pro- viding that Chairman will correspond i:rp.mediately on appointment with each member of Committee. Chairman could go to Chic~go to.finalize program with staff and sit in on meeting of American Committee~ Sometimes holiday schedules affect formation of program and Chairman must Uq~ initiative right from start. Logbook is excellent., no suggestion for improvemeµt.

7.

What strengths and weaknesses would you list in terms of your committee program and its application to the local community through club action?

Certain suggestions in program are idealistic in nature i.e. Fight inflation., encourage thrift on part of all citizeµs ~tc. but generally its application at club level was good in my estimatio~.

Co-operate more closely with existing agencie~ i.e. National Library Week) Canadian Mental Health Association and use data which they can disseminate in promoting Committee ~rogram. This is most applicable on the club level.

9.

Are there additional materials that you would suggest which would help the local club committee implement your program suggestions?

No further suggestions to thos~ o~t~ined in No.

8.

However, this year the Gen- eral Office contacted many Canadian organizations and we can expect contin- ued support from many of these organizations providing we are willing to

cooperate.

10, What suggestions would you make for changes in the report form used by the district chairmen so that information recetve4 would be of greater use to you?

No changes suggested in this form.
