Background of Study

This is because students can share their information, experiences and ideas in the written text. In this research, the researcher focuses on the grammatical cohesion to be analyzed in the student's descriptive writing of Chapter I paragraphs and resume.

Research Question

What types of grammatical coherence are encountered when writing descriptive paragraphs by students on a graduate thesis of the State Institute for Islamic Studies of Metro in 2017/2018. What is the dominant form of grammatical coherence that exists in students writing descriptive paragraphs on State Institute for Islamic Studies of Metro undergraduate thesis in 2017/2018.

Objective and Benefit the Study

By doing this research, the researcher can hopefully contribute knowledge and awareness about the importance of mastering grammatical cohesion. This research can be used as an additional reference for future researchers, especially those interested in the study of discourse analysis on cohesion.

The phenomenon analyzed by the researcher is grammatical coherence in descriptive paragraph writing on undergraduate thesis of the State Institute of Islamic Studies of Metro in 2017/2018. The primary data of this research is from the document students' descriptive paragraph writing on the undergraduate thesis of the State Institute of Islamic Studies of Metro. Based on the descriptive paragraph of the Descriptive Paragraph 7, it found two ellipses used.

Based on the descriptive performance of the student's paragraph writing, it was found using the substitution of others. It can be concluded that the dominant type of grammatical cohesion used by students in descriptive paragraph writing among the university theses of Metro State Institute for Islamic Studies is related to 131 articles. In conclusion, the dominant type of grammatical cohesion that exists in the descriptive paragraph that squeezes the Metro State Institute for Islamic Studies 2017/2018 university thesis is conjunction.

All the grammatical cohesion is still found in paragraph 10 descriptive of the students writing among the university theses of the Metro State Institute for Islamic Studies in 2017/2018. The dominant types of grammatical cohesion that exist in the descriptive paragraph that students write among metro state institute of islamic studies university theses is the conjunction.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

The Types and Characteristics of the Researcher

It involved developing a description of an individual or setting, analyzing the data for themes or categories, and finally creating an interpretation or drawing conclusions about its meaning personally and theoretically, stating the lesson. In fact, there are five types of qualitative research approach to inquiry, namely, narrative research, phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography, that is, narrative research, phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography, and case study.

Data Source

Data Collecting Technique

Based on the above statements, the researcher collected data from the document of English students' descriptive paragraph writing on bachelor's thesis from the Norwegian Institute for Islamic Studies of Metro in 2017/2018, which was obtained from the library. So in conducting this research, the researcher used observation in the library and took some English descriptive paragraphs of students' bachelor's thesis from the State Institute of Islamic Studies of Metro.

Analysis Data Technique

Research Approach

Based on the writing 2 descriptive paragraph written by the student, no substitution was used. Based on the descriptive writing paragraph 3 written by the student, no substitution was used. Based on the descriptive writing paragraph 5 written by the student, no substitution was used.

Based on the descriptive paragraph writing 6, which is written by the student, there is no use of substitution. Based on the descriptive paragraph writing 9 written by the student, there is no use of substitution. The grammatical coherence devices in descriptive paragraph writing in bachelor thesis written by the student 4 are 7 reference, 3 ellipses,.

After collecting the data, the researcher found all kinds of grammatical coherence in the descriptive paragraph about the bachelor's thesis. In addition, there was differentiation in the use of grammatical coherence in writing descriptive paragraphs by students in the graduate thesis of the State Institute for Islamic Studies of Metro in academic year 2017/2018.

RESULT AND DISCUSSION

Description of Research Setting

As an Islamic institution that is one of the favorite universities, IAIN Metro has vision and mission. In addition, as an Islamic institution, IAIN Metro has an education system based on Islamic values. And finally, on August 1, 2016, it turned into the State Institute of Islamic Studies (IAIN) and was legalized.

Now, IAIN Metro has four faculties, namely the faculty of tarbiya, the faculty of syari'ah, the faculty of business economics and the faculty of Islamic proclamation and communication. The number of students in Metro State Institute for Islamic Studies is 7440 students. Historically, the S1 TBI Metro State Institute for Islamic Studies came from the Diploma 3 (D3) of English Education that opened in 2002.

According to the implementation license of study program from the general director, TBI is located in State Institute of Islamic Studies of Metro in Jl. Actually, it will create a dynamic, open and polite relationship between the stakeholders in TBI IAIN Metro.

Discussion

The grammatical cohesion tools in writing descriptive paragraphs in an undergraduate thesis written by the 9 student are 8 reference, 5 ellipsis, 0 substitution and 18 conjunction. The grammatical cohesion resources in writing descriptive paragraphs in an undergraduate thesis written by student 10 are 6 references, 2 ellipsis, 0 replacement, and 15 conjunction. The types of grammatical coherence used when writing descriptive paragraphs about a senior thesis were 71 reference items (29%), 37 ellipsis items (15%), 5 replacement items (2%), and 131 conjunction items (54%) as the highest grammatical coherence.

In addition, the researcher found the lack of article usage from descriptive paragraph 10. It was provided by the different percentage in each type of grammatical context usage in descriptive paragraph writing. The percentage of types of use of grammatical coherence in writing descriptive paragraphs among the bachelor's thesis.

The figure above is the percentage of the use of grammatical cohesion in descriptive paragraphs made by students on a senior thesis. Based on the result of the data analysis, the researcher eagerly wanted to deduce from this study that there was some form of grammatical coherence in the writing of descriptive paragraphs in the senior thesis of the State Institute for Islamic Studies of Metro.
