The Concept of Speaking

  • Models of Teaching Speaking

Talking is talking is so much a part of everyday life that people take it for granted. According to Brown in Jaya Nur Iman (2016), speaking is a productive skill that can be observed directly and empirically, these observations are invariably colored by the accuracy and efficiency of a test-taker's listening skill, which necessarily compromises the reliability and validity of a oral production test. Speaking is also a multi-sensory activity because it involves paralinguistic features such as eye contact, facial expressions, body language, pace, pauses, changes in voice quality and pitch variation, which affect conversational flow (Thornbury 2005).

From the definition above, it can be concluded that speaking is expressing idea, opinion or feeling to others by using words to inform or entertain. According to Boyd in Sari (2013), speaking is an activity of presenting information from the speaker to the listener. As a skill that enables people to produce utterances when they are truly communicative, speech is lustful (and purpose-driven), for words they really want to communicate something to achieve a certain goal.

Although speaking is quite natural, speaking in a language other than our own is anything but simple. Tarigan in Shohib (2012) defines that speaking is a language skill that is developed in children's life which is preceded by listening skill and during that period speaking skill is learned.

The Concept of Pictures

  • Types of Pictures
  • Preparations and Procedure That Use in Describing Pictures
  • The Advantages of Using Pictures in Teaching Speaking

Jeremy resents in Risky Fauziah (2016), images can be in the form of flashcard, large wall pictures, cue card, photographs or illustration and projected slide. Alternatively, the language may be limited if the original is a simple line drawing, or the language may be specialized if the original is a technical diagram. A picture is an excellent medium in which this can be done. pictures arouse playfulness in students because pictures are interesting.

The teacher can easily find the picture, for example, in books, magazines, newspapers, etc. This means that by using the picture, the teacher can involve all the students in his class. This means that by using the picture, the teacher can easily explain the new vocabulary words to the students, which prevents misunderstandings between the students.

The function of describing a picture for learning to speak is to practice describing things and using the preposition and position yes. The positive attitude of students towards what they are learning and towards the process itself can be improved.

Conceptual Framework

However, the researcher wanted to overcome the problems by using a descriptive picture in the speaking class. This model is chosen because pictures can encourage the student to be more active, and pictures are helpful in teaching, especially in conversation. Since speaking is one of the skills that students need to master, the teacher must find models to improve students' speaking skills.

The use of pictures offers many advantages to support active learning in the classroom and can be used to improve students' speaking skills in terms of pronunciation and vocabulary. In the last stages of cycle I, the unsuccessful method, the research continues in cycle II the same stages of cycle I. From the application of Picture Description in improving the speaking ability of students in SMA Negeri 1 Masalle, it can be motivate and encourage students to .

The observation aims to collect data on the participation of students and active students in the learning process. The speaking test aims to understand the students' speaking ability in terms of pronunciation and vocabulary using descriptive figures. The result of data analysis revealed that teaching speaking skill through picture description model can improve students' speaking skill in terms of pronunciation and vocabulary in the eleventh grade of Enrekang Senior High School 11.
