FOURTH ANNUAL DENTAL HEALTH CONFERENCE HEU> SEPTEMBER 28-29 The members of the IUSD Committee on
Teaching, including Drs. Starkey (ehm.), Dykema, Burstone, House, Gilmore and
Standish, organized and administered the dental school's first annual teaching conference at Spring Mill State Park, Mitchell, Indiana, September 12-15.
Comments received by the Teaching Com- mittee from many of the facultyindicat•
ed that the conference was a success.
Eighty-four members of the faculty par- ticipated including a number of digni- taries from the Bloomington campus.
Dean Heffner, vice president of the University and dean of faculties report- ed to the general faculty of the Univer-
sity in Bloomington on Monday evening, September 27, that he had participated in our conference and deemed it a very valuable approach to imp~ovement of
teaching. He expressed the hope that other schools of the university would consider holding such conferences.

lUSD WELCOMES NEW STUDENTS
A record number of new students have enrolled in dental school. The student office list 97 freshmen on the roster, and the graduate office reports 44 new graduate students have enrolled this
September. Miss Fisk reports the en- rollment of 34 first year dental hygiene students.

DR. DYKEMA HAS POST
IN AlillS PARTIAL DENTURE SECTION At the July meeting of the American Association of Dental Schools in Toronto, Dr. Dykema was elected secretary of the Partial Denture Section.
The 4th Annual Conference on Dental Health sponsored by the Indiana State Dental Association and the Dental Divi-
sion of the Indiana State Board of Health was held September 28-29 at the Indiana- polis Motor Speedway Motel. The program was directed toward community dental health education activities for the coming year. such subjects as National Children's Dental Health Week, Project Head Start, School Health Education and Dental science Fairs were on the agenda.
Attending were 95 representatives of component dental societies and school and community health programs. A high- light of the program was an address by Mr. Perry J. Sandell, director of the Bureau of Dental Health Education of the American Dental Association.

DENTAL DIVISION NEWS
Most recent Indiana communities to approve fluoridation are South Bend, Bicknell, Boonville and Topeka. When these systems go into effect, Indiana will be over the 70 percent mark in the number of people who drink water from a communal source containing optimum fluoride.
Two new and excellent 16 mm films on dental health and fluoridation have been received and are available for school, P9T.A~, community, etc. programs.
Dr. Charles Gish forsook his annual Canadian fishing vacation to "catch up on work" at the cottage he and his family recently purchased at Lake Freeman.

FALL CONFERENCE SEPTEMBER 23-25 The Dental School Alumni Association held its annual Fall Conference in Bloomington, September 23-25. Dr. H.
William Gilmore served as president and Dr. Jerry Leer as secretary. Dr. Malcolm
Boone was elected president for 1965-66.
Drs. Shafer and Standish presentad a pro- gram on Oral Pathology at the meeting.
Also appearing on the program was Dr.
John Mink, former director of the Riley Dental Clinic and now chairman of Pedo- dontics at the University of Kentucky.

DR. HARRY HEALEY TO PRESENT COURSE TO DENTAL TEACHING MISSION Dr. Harry J. Healey will present a course on Endodontics to the Dental Teaching Mission at the USAF Hospital, Wright-Patterson Field, Dayton, Ohio
on October 8.

ORTHODONTIC DEPARTMENT REPORTS
Dr. Charles Burstone presented a short course on Segmented Arch Technique at the U of C School of Dentistry in San Francisco, September 23-24. While in California he visited the Ormco in Glendora. He also spent a short time with Drs. Robbie Robinson and Robert Kuhn ,both IUSD graduates.
Eight new graduate students and one new staff member have come to the de- partment. or. Stanley Braun will teach Theoretical Mechanics and do research
in the area of intra-oral pressure measurement.
New graduate students from outside the U.S. are nrs. Fortin end Hoshizaki from Canada and Dr. Veve from Puerto Rico.

SAUNDERS PUBLISHES SECOND ED IT ION FACULTY TEXTBOOK
Drs. Dykema, Phillips and Johnston received word that Saunders Publishing Company would release the second edition of Modern Practice in Crown & Bridge Prosthodontics in September.
PROFESSOR RALPH PHILLIPS ELECTED VICE PRESIDENT IADR
At the 43rd general meeting in Toronto, the IADR elected Prof. Ralph W. Phillips to the vice presidency of that organiza- tion. He will succeed to the presidency., now held by Dr. Martin Rushton of London,
in 1968. The only member of IU to hold this office previously was Dean M. K. Hine.
Prof. Phillips continues his travels as lecturer, clinician and consultant with ten engagements in eight states and
Canada during the month of October.

NEW FACES AT IUSD
New to the staff of the Library is Miss Lynda Williams at the circulation desk. A native of Wheatland, Indiana, Lynda attended Johnson Bible College, Knoxville, Tennessee and taught Bible in the public school system of Corinth, Mississippi before coming to the library
staff in August.
The Main Clinic welcomes Mrs. Ruth Flint who has joined the staff and will work in the supply room where Mrs. Karen Bauer was formerly employed.
Miss Edith Banks has joined the Assist- ing Staff in the Dean's Office.

OD-OM DEPARTMENT WELCOMES NEW GRADUATE STUDENTS
Dr. William Binnie of Glasgow,Scotland and Dr. Ronald Gier of Manhattan, Kansas are beginning their graduate work towards their M.S.D. in oral diagnosis-oral med- icine. Dr. Binnie has recently finished a year at McGill University in Montreal.
Dr. Gier was previously practicing gen- eral dentistry. A hearty welcome to both of these doctors and their families.

PROSTHETICS REPORTS Dr. L. Rush Bailey will present a table clinic on Prosthetics at the Ohio State Dental Association meeting in Cincinnati, Ohio on October 5 and 6.

PEPARTMENT OF PEDODONTICS
The Department of Pedodontics was wit- ness to (in spirit, if not body) three marriages during the summer. Elaine Linville, dental assistant, was married to Marshall Arnett on August 14th in Tabernac"ie Baptist Church in the city;
Dr. Burton Horwitz, graduate student, was married in Raleigh, North Carolina, August 15; Dr. Liam Convery married Miss Hazel Hird, Department of Pharmacology, September 3rd in Glesgow, Scotland.
Dr. & Mrs. Convery toured Ireland,Scot-
land and Bermuda before returning to the States.
Soon to be married is Janice schnitzius, dental assistant,.She became engaged in July to Edward S. Kin. They will be married in St. Joan of Arc Church on December 18th of this year.

Dr. Paul Starkey spoke before the Minnesota society of Dentistry for
Children, Minneapolis, on September 22.
Dr. Roger Noonan and his wife, Jenny Lou, and their three children, Arthur, Erick, and Roger,Jr. have moved to Indianapolis from Flint, Michigan.
Dr. Noonan has been appointed Assist- ant Professor of Pedodontics. A graduate of the University of Louisville, Dr.
Noonan received his Master's degree in Pedodontics at the University of Michi- gan. For the past three years, he has been a member of the staff at the Mott Children's Health Center in Flint.

Club on October 2 and 3.

UNDERGRADUATE PEDODONTIC STAFF MEETS
The Undergraduate taculty of the De- partment of Pedodontics met at the home of Dr. Larry Jones, August 5 for their third meeting this summer. Dr. Paul Starkey reviewed for the undergraduate
·clinical staff the lectures he presented to the undergraduate students in the pedodontic course. All three meetings have had nearly 100% attendance.

DEAN HINE TRAVELS
Dr. Maynard K. Hine attended the Vir- ginia State Dental Association meeting in Roanoke, Va. on September 19-22. He was the speaker for the Medical College
of Virginia Dental Alumni Association on the 21st and at the Dental Association's banquet on the 20th.
On October 2-3 Dr. M.K. Hine attended the meeting of the Ohio State Dental Association, as president-elect of the American Dental Association.
Dr. Hine attended the National Con- ference on Dental Research and Education in Washington on October 5-6. He present- ed a paper on the Positive Influence of Dental Research on Dental Education --
Present and Future.

ORAL PATHOLOGY REPORTS
Dr. Wm. G. Shafet acted in his capacity as Civilian Consultant to the Surgeon General (USAF), by reviewing the Dental Internship program at Carswell AFB,Texas on September 27-29i
On October 8 Dr. Wm. G. Shafer will present an oncology course for senior students at the Medical College of Vir- ginia at Richmond, Virginia.
