A hallmark of the Medical School admissions process is the personal attention to detail from the administrative staff and Admissions Committee. Vanderbilt is recognized as one of the leaders in research among medical schools in the United States. Abraham Flexner's famous report, published by the Carnegie Foundation in 1910 and later credited with revolutionizing medical education in America, singled out Vanderbilt as "the institution to which responsibility for medical education in Tennessee should be left."

The new school district was called "the best combined school and hospital to be found in the United States." The faculty of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine recognizes its responsibility to present candidates for the M.D. Applicants must be admitted to the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and the Vanderbilt University Graduate School on the recommendation of the Medical Scientist Training Program Committee.

Students then enter the graduate school (Ph.D.) portion of the program after the second year of medical school. Certain PhD school courses can be taken as part of the elective at the School of Medicine and used for formal coursework requirements for the PhD.

Many of the proposed courses will be held together with candidates in the master's program in public health. The primary objective of the program is to provide training in methods of evaluating clinical outcomes in human populations or samples. Visiting students are allowed to apply to work at the Faculty of Medicine (if space is available) with the approval of the relevant department and with the consent of the course provider and the vice dean for medical students.

Completed applications must be received in the Student Registration Office at least eight weeks before the course start date. The HE curriculum is divided into required subjects that are taken by all students and elective subjects that are taken according to the individual student's choice. Students develop an elective program to meet individual needs with the assistance of faculty and the approval of the Associate Dean for Medical Students or a designee.

A variety of electives or self-study electives may be taken on Wednesday and Friday afternoons as well as on Monday afternoons in the fall semester or Tuesday afternoons in the second half of the spring semester. The flexibility of the fourth-year curriculum gives the student maximum opportunities for individual development. School of Medicine faculty have professional responsibilities at Vanderbilt, Veterans, Saint Thomas and Baptist hospitals.

Patients in these hospitals are cared for by members of the medical staff, assisted by intern and resident staff. All physicians at the VA Hospital are full-time faculty members of the School of Medicine. All work submitted as part of course requirements is assumed to be the product of the student submitting it, unless credited by the student in the manner determined by the course instructor.

By registering, the student acknowledges the authority of the Student Fee Board of the School of Medicine. Students normally take step 1 at the end of the second year and step 2 in the fourth year. Each subsequent year's courses require an increasing degree of coordination and integration of the material previously presented.

The school does not require students to take the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) for promotion or graduation, but it is required for licensure. Successful completion of medical curriculum courses and school positions are determined by the nature of the student's daily work; the results of examinations, which may be written, oral or practical; and observing the learner in action. The medical school curriculum builds progressively on the course work of each previous academic year.

Therefore, thorough knowledge and understanding of each subject and the appropriate level of skill are required to maintain satisfactory progress in the medical curriculum. The summative assessment of academic performance for each subject is reported on the following basis:
