Chuck started his farming program with 300 broilers and one gilt on the family farm, about six miles from Northrield, Minnesota.

Chuck credits a lot of help with his family, especially sisters Annie and Katie, who helped with the worry when other farm work took up his extra time. Consultant Hovlands says what's remarkable about Chuck's business is that he made all his own turkey equipment.
When daylight hours didn't give Chuck enough time, he set up portable lights in the yard and worked at night. He is also a stockholder in the Dennison Cooperative Elevator and the Northrield Farmers' Cooperative Elevator, in which he purchases. At the 1952 Minnesota Convention, he was elected state treasurer, and later that year, the Minnesota Star Farmer.
