PREFACE

By praising to God almighty for His grace and guidance that I have received during doing this thesis, so that I could complete my thesis entitled "The Principle of Politeness in Sinking of the Van Der Wijck Ship". This thesis was arranged as one of the graduation requirements for the Bachelor of English (S.S) degree in the Undergraduared Program of English Department, Faculty of Language Education and Letters, Widya Kartika University Surabaya.

During the research and arrangement of the report in this thesis, the author faced many obstacles, and of course she met a lot of obstacles. These obstacles and handy caps can be overcome by the author. Because of helps, guidances and support from various sides therefore, with humility and this opportunity the author expressesed his gratitude to:

1. God Almighty, who has accompanied and given the grace of wisdom for the author to be able to complete the research properly.

2. To Rodhi Nahatiyasalva, her father, Dewi Kusmolowati, her mother and her 4 siblings: Feliza Abadiya Sari, Afiyah Romadhoni, Salma Rosyidana, and Muhammad Abdullah Haekal who have given encouragement, support and provided prayers so that the author could complete this research well.

In Sinking of the Van Der Wijck Ship. This study aimed to explain the compliance and violation of Principle of politeness in Sinking of the Van Der Wijck Ship. This author used a qualitative method. The data source of the researcher came from the film “Sinking of the Van Der Wijck Ship”. To collect the data, researcher watched, listened the film and read the film script. The data analysis and the results will be presented descriptively. Based on the conversation, the researcher only took the utterance, analyzed the utterance and put it into a table. The aims were to make it easier to classify data. Then the researcher divided the utterance containing compliance and violation of language politeness. The researcher found that total of 31 maxims of compliances and violations. The compliances are 2 tact maxims, 6 generosity maxims, 4 approbation maxims, 5 modesty maxims, 3 agreement maxims, and 4 sympathy maxims. While the violations are 2 tact maxims, 2 modesty maxims, 3 agreement maxims and no generosity maxim, approbation maxim, and sympathy maxim.
