The result of the data showed that the mean score of the students before the literal comprehension test is 62.71. While the post-test was higher than the mean score of the pre-test, the post-test for literal comprehension was 79.85. While the post-test was higher than the pre-test mean score, the interpretive comprehension post-test was 81.14.

And the reading comprehension improvement score from pre-test to post-test in reading comprehension improvement was 11.85%.

INTRODUCTION

  • Background
  • Problem of The Research
  • Objective of The Research
  • Significance of The Research
  • Scope of The Research

Using the Global method, students read all the material for a given resume that students have read. Because of the important meaning of the text, the researcher offers to use the Global method in teaching reading, because it can motivate students to read more and can bring students to interact with the text. Based on the above explanation, the researcher is interested in conducting a research titled "Using Global Method to Improve Reading Skills in Grade Eight of SMP NEGERI 2 SUNGGUMINASA".

The purpose of this research is limited to the Global Method in improving reading comprehension for eighth grade students of SMPN 2 Sunngguminasa, Gowa in the academic year that focuses on literal comprehension (main ideas) and interpretive comprehension (conclusion and prediction of results). of the text in using the global method to improve reading comprehension.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Previous Related Findings

Based on the previous research above, the researcher is interested in doing this research using the Global method. The similarities between this research and those researches are using the global method to improve students' English skills. The global method gave students effort and motivation to improve their skills and teacher support for monitoring student activity.

The first can be concluded that the global method can improve initial reading skills, so the researcher's suggestions for teachers should apply the global method in initial reading skills.

The concepts of reading

Silent reading tends to empower the reader to figure out the meaning of the words. A recount text has an orientation, a sequence of events in chronological order, personal comments about the events, and a reorientation that "finishes" the sequence of events. Events: Describes a series of events that happened in the past. Orientation: Provides the writer's personal commentary on the story.

To inform readers of events of the day that are considered newsworthy or important.

The Concepts of Reading comprehension…

Global method

It is expected that the result of the research will be significant and very useful information for the teachers in the teaching of reading, especially to improve the reading comprehension of the students. The result of data analysis is to determine the extent of the ability to read the beginning of Indonesian by the method of first grade students of SDN Global Keganteran Kasemen Serang District Banten. The second research focus on determining the extent of the ability to read the beginning of Indonesian by the method.

From this point of view, it can be concluded that reading is a process of active thinking, where the reader tries to get the information provided by the author and understand what the author's purpose is. One of the early reading learning methods that will be discussed in this paper is the global reading method. Global appears in different forms depending on the level of the school and the needs of the students.

Conceptual Framework

Students are not allowed to sleep or do homework (except reading assignments) during pickup from essence. The global method is to improve the reading comprehension of the student's reading pace, vocabulary and spelling. Students and ideally their teacher read a book of their choice for a set amount of time.

The teaching and reading process through sustained silent reading can improve the student's reading ability, enhance the student's motivation to read, and promote overall language development: oral and written. And the result will have an impact on the students' performance in literal comprehension and interpretive comprehension.

  • Research Variable
  • Research Instrument
  • Data Collection Procedure
  • Data Analysis Technique

A global method (the Ganze method) that students use to understand the information contained in the reading material. The researcher gave the treatment to the students after taking the pre-test to improve the students' knowledge using the global method. This means that the interpretive understanding (inference) of the students in this school significantly improves after the treatment.

This was supported by the mean score and percentage of the students' pre- and post-test result. The result of the reading test data collection, as explained in the previous section on the findings, was that the performance of the students after using the Global Method was significant. Using the Global Method can develop students literal reading (main idea) in the eighth grade of SMPN 2SUNGGUMINASA.

This is demonstrated by the improvement in students' average score from the individual test to the post-test. Using the global method can develop students' reading interpretation (inference) in the eighth grade of SMPN 2 SUNGGUMINASA. This demonstrates the improvement in students' mean score from pretest to posttest.

FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION

Findings

The purpose of this research was to find out if there is the difference in meaning that the students ―reading comprehension among the students‖ who were taught by using Global method. The result of data findings found that the teaching of reading comprehension through Global Mathod can improve the students' performance in Literal Comprehension, especially in main ideas and sequence of details, and interpretive comprehension conclusion and prediction of outcomes, at the VIII.5 of SMPN 2 SUNGGUMINASA . Based on the data of pre-test, as clearly presented, the mean of the total pre-test score was 61.71, the minimum was 50, maximum70 and standard deviation was 9.26274.

In conclusion, before the treatment, the eighth grade students of SMPN 2 SUNGGUMINASA had fair reading skills especially in descriptive text. Based on the post-test data above, as clearly shown the mean of the total post-test score was 79.85, the minimum was 70, the maximum was 90 and the standard deviation was 6.12201. Based on the Pre-Test data, it is clearly shown that the mean of the total pre-test score is 62.14, the minimum is 50, the maximum is 70 and the standard is 7.88.

The table above shows the frequency and percentage of students Interpretive Pre-test (final) out of 35 students. In conclusion, before the treatment, the eighth grade students of SMPN 2 SUNGGUMINASA have good reading skills especially interpretative (conclusion). Interpretive understanding (conclusion) in the pretest from 35 students, as shown in the table, almost all students are in the good category with 22 students or 94.3%.

Regarding the hypothesis in this research, H0 states that there is no significant difference in students' reading comprehension before and after treatment of the reading material using the Global Method in eighth grade descriptive text. It means that there was a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test score in reading comprehension.

Discussion

They only read, but they did not understand how to find out the main idea and conclusion of the text. Using the global method of reading activity, the writer found that the mean score of students' post-test performance is higher than pre-test. Then Table 4.6 showed that the score for knowing the improved literal understanding was 62.14 and Table 4.8 showed that the score for knowing the improved interpretive understanding was 81.14 after using the Global method.

This means that the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted because there is a difference between the significant mean test scores given by the researcher using the Global Method in teaching reading. From the above discussion, it can be concluded that using the global method is one of the teaching methods that can improve the reading comprehension of students in the eighth grade of SMPN 2 SUNGGUMINASA. The researcher suggests the English teacher to know the students' interest in learning English and know how to monitor the students, as it is very important to support the students' knowledge in preparing the material or understanding the material before the Global Method.

Other researchers must be creative and innovative to modify method activities in using the Global Method to improve students' reading comprehension. At the end of her studies, she was able to finish her thesis entitled "The use of Global Method to Improve Reading Comprehension at the Eighth Grade of SMPN 2 Sungguminasa".

CONCLUSION AND SUGGESTION

Conclusion

While the post-test is higher than the average score of pre-test, the post-test in interpretive understanding (conclusion) is 79.85.
