Phylogeny of the Nystaleini:
Tracing the Evolution of Pheromone Structures.
Abstract: More systematists and non-systematists are using cladistic techniques to analyze not only relationships among taxa, but the evolution of characters themselves. I will compare the different methods available for tracing character evolution on the cladogram and discuss how these methods generate testable hypotheses. This character analysis, when applied to male pheromone (courtship) structures in notodontid moths, reveals independent, derived losses of these elaborate structures in one clade. The loss of courtship structures means that male chemical communication and correlated courtship behaviors also have been lost. The probable evolutionary pathway of mating systems and role of sexual selection in the speciation of these moths will be discussed.
