RESEARCH METHOD

The Characteristic and Type of Research

Data Resource

There are two kinds of resources, primary sources and secondary sources. Primary sources provide main information directly from documents and observations of the students of English education department of IAIN Metro. Secondary sources are from the interview or relevant material to support the primary data.

Data Collecting Technique

Documentation is a means of collecting some information in the form of a written or documentary source such as books, journals, diaries, etc. The student diary is used to support the researcher to record the event or information related to the students' writing. JhonW.Creswell explained that “observations, in which the researcher takes field notes on the behavior or activities of individuals at the research site. Sugiono said that "in participant observation, the researcher observes what people do, listens to what they say, and participates in their activities."

The researcher would observe the participants directly and then record what they do, say and act. Interview is a meeting between two people to exchange information and idea through questions and answers, resulting in communication and joint construction of meaning on a particular topic. From the quotes, it can be noted that what the data needs to be remembered and checked over the line of questioning. The author used the in-depth interview for the reason that the participants are not the same as the interviewer. Therefore, they will enjoy answering the questions.

In the open-ended questions, the writer will change some questions in the form of 5WH/1H questions that allow. As explained by Creswell "these interviews involve unstructured and generally open-ended questions that are few in number and intended to elicit views and opinions from participants".

Data Analysis Technique

In this case, the researcher obtained information from the collocation of the student's analysis in the written descriptive text as the main data, the transcription of the conducted interview and also the documents. Data reduction was the process of selecting, focusing, simplifying, abstracting and transforming the information appearing in the transcription. Data presentation was the presentation of information that was made in a short essay, draft, category relationship, flowchart, etc.

It was the process of elaboration with long argumentation and revision of the research done.

Research Approach

In this study, the researcher analyzes the types of collocation in the students' writing descriptive text. When analyzing students' types of collocation in their writing, the researcher uses documentation drawn from the students' descriptive text. Easy to learn = easy (adjective) + to learn (to infinitive) This collocation is correct and included in grammatical collocation.

This collocation is an incorrect combination of words because the word "search" should be used for a concrete noun and. This collocation is incorrect because the word populer as a noun and a noun are used for the subject or object. Around the house = around (preposition) + house (noun) This collocation is correct and included in the grammatical collocation.

In the living room = in (preposition) + living room (noun) This collocation is correct and included in grammatical collocation. In the morning = in (preposition) + the morning (noun) This collocation is correct and included in grammatical collocation. However, the frequency of using lexical collocation is more less than grammatical collocation in their writing.

Based on the above, the researcher knows that 23 are correct grammatical collocation and 13 are correct lexical collocation. It can be concluded that grammatical collocation is widely used by the students of the English Department of State for Islamic Studies of Metro in academic year 2018/2019. The data shows that most students use collocation when writing descriptive text. The collocation is classified into two types: grammatical and lexical collocation.

Answer: because I think collocation is very important in writing descriptive text and by using collocation it is to create a natural whiteness to be a good writing. Based on the students' interview, the researcher concluded that students should study more about collocation, especially about the types of collocation, because collocation is very important in writing descriptive text. The result of this analysis shows that there are two types of collocation in the students' writing of descriptive text.

Based on the chart above, students tend to use grammatical coordination in their writing. Collocation is categorized into two types which are described in percentages, namely grammatical attachment and lexical attachment. In addition, students argue that attachment is to create natural writing and good writing.

Students should use collocation more often in writing, not only grammatically, but also lexically.
