SUBJECT: MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF THE CROP WEATHER WATCH GROUP HELD ON 08.07.2016.
Summary observations of the Group on Agenda Items
Details of the mean maximum and minimum temperature during the week 30th June, 2016 to 06th July, 2016 were as under:-
Maximum Temperature
Above normal by 2 to 40C over some parts of Kutch and isolated pockets of East Rajasthan.
It was normal to near normal over rest of the country except many parts of Uttarakhand, Marathwada, some parts of Punjab, Telangana and isolated pockets of Haryana, West Rajasthan, West Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Vidarbha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, North Interior Karnataka, Rayalaseema and Tamil Nadu where it was below normal by 2 to 40C.
Minimum Temperature
Above normal by 2 to 40C over many parts of Andaman & Nicobar Islands and isolated pockets of West Rajasthan.
It was normal to near normal over rest of the country except many parts of Coastal Karnataka, some parts of East Uttar Pradesh, South Interior Karnataka, Lakshadweep and isolated pockets of Jammu & Kashmir, East Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat Region, Telangana and Kerala where it was below normal by 2 to 60C.
In the monsoon season, weekly Rainfall for the country as a whole during the week 30th June, 2016 to 06th July, 2016 has been 35% higher than Long Period Average (LPA). Rainfall (%
departure from LPA) in the four broad geographical divisions of the country during the above period has been higher by 57% in North West India, 56% in Central India, 15% in East & North East India and lower by 4% in South Peninsula.
The cumulative rainfall in the country during the monsoon season i.e. 01st June, 2016 to 06th July, 2016 has been 1% higher than Long Period Average (LPA). Rainfall (% departure from LPA) in the four broad geographical divisions of the country during the above period has been higher than 19%in North West India, 16% in South Peninsula, 4% in Central India and lower by 17% in East &
North East India.
Out of 36 met sub-divisions, 32 met sub-divisions constituting 89% of the total area of the country has received excess/normal rainfall, 4 met sub-divisions constituting 11% of the total area of the country has received deficient/scanty rainfall. Central Water Commission monitors 91 major reservoirs in the country which have total live capacity of 157.80 BCM at Full Reservoir Level (FRL). Current live storage in these reservoirs as on 06th July, 2016 was 28.21 BCM as against 51.31 BCM on 06.07.2015 (last year) and 38.30 BCM of Normal (average storage of the last 10 years) storage. Current year’s storage is 55% of the last year’s storage and 74% of the normal storage.
As per latest information available on sowing of crops, around 38% of the normal area under Kharif crops has been sown upto 08.07.2016. Total area sown under Kharif crops in the country as on 08.07.2016 has been reported to be 406.27 lakh hectares as compared to 431.82 lakh hectares last year. This year’s area coverage so far is higher by 26.7 lakh ha. than normal as on date.
Area coverage under rice is higher by 4.6 lakh ha. than the last year.
Area coverage under pulses is higher by 9.5 lakh ha. than the last year and by 18.6 lakh ha. than normal as on date. This is due to higher coverage in Tur, Urad and Moong.
Area coverage under Kharif coarse cereals has been lower by 2.8 lakh ha as compared to last year.
However, it is higher by 7.7 lakh ha. than normal as on date.
Area coverage under total Kharif Oilseeds is lower by 18.9 lakh ha. than the last year. However, it is higher by 19.1 lakh ha. than normal as on date.
Area coverage under Cotton is lower by 19.9 lakh ha. than the last year.
As compared to last year, total area coverage this year is higher by 2.1 lakh ha. under sugarcane.
Availability position of seeds and fertilizers has been found satisfactory.
1. Monsoon Season (June – September) during the week ending on 06th July, 2016
Sub-division-wise daily distribution of maximum/minimum temperature is shown in Table-1.1
Rainfall during the week (30th June, 2016 to 06th July, 2016) Rainfall was excess/normal in 30, deficient/scanty in 06 out of 36 meteorological sub-divisions.
Cumulative rainfall (01st June, 2016 to 06th July, 2016) Rainfall was excess/normal in 32, deficient/scanty in 04 out of 36 meteorological sub-division.

2. Reservoir Status (For the week ending on 06.07.2016)
The Central Water Commission monitors the live storage of 91 important/major reservoirs, having capacity at Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of 157.80 billion cubic meters (BCM), which is about 62% of total reservoir capacity in the country.
Water stock in 91 major reservoirs increased to 28.21 BCM from the previous week’s level of 23.90 BCM. Current storage is lower than the last year’s position of 51.31 BCM and the average of last 10 year’s storage of 38.30 BCM.

The percentage to live capacity at FRL was 33% on 06/07/2015, 24% on 06/07/2014, 27% on 06/07/2013 and 16% on 06/07/2012.

There were 34 reservoirs having storage more than 80%, 22 reservoirs having storage between 50% to 80% of Normal Storage, 20 reservoir having storage between 30% to 50%, 15 reservoir having storage upto 30% of Normal Storage and 06 reservoir having no live storage.

4. Pest & Diseases:
Incidence of white fly on cotton crop has been reported in low to moderate intensity in few villages of Khian Sarwar &
Abohar blocks of Fazilka district of Punjab.
Incidence of brinjal leaf curl virus on brinjal crop has been reported in moderate intensity in Trichy district of Tamilnadu.
No shortage of Chemical / Bio-pesticides was reported from any State / UT.
