Significant Weather Features

♦ No significant change in minimum and maximum temperatures over Northwest India during next 2 days and rise by 2-3°C in minimum temperatures & 5-6°C in maximum temperatures during subsequent 3 days.

♦ Fall in minimum temperatures by 3-5°C over East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh and by 4-6°C over East India during next 3 days.

♦ Fall in minimum temperatures by 2-3°C over West India during next 48 hours. No significant change in minimum temperatures over remaining parts of the country during next 2 days.

Cold Wave to Severe Cold Wave conditions very likely in some pockets over Punjab, Haryana & Chandigarh, West Uttar Pradesh and north Rajasthan during next 2 days and decrease thereafter.

Cold Day to Severe Cold Day conditions very likely in some pockets over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, north Rajasthan and northwest Uttar Pradesh during next 24 hours.

Cold Day conditions

in isolated pockets over these areas during subsequent 24 hours and decrease thereafter.

Dense Fog in isolated pockets very likely over Assam & Meghalaya and Tripura & Mizoram during next 2 days.

♦ Under the influence of the easterly wave, scattered to fairly widespread rain/thundershowers very likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry &

Karaikal, Kerala & Mahe and Lakshadweep area during next 3 days. Isolated heavy rainfall very likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry &

Karaikal on 18th & 19th December; over Kerala & Mahe on 18th December and over Lakshadweep on 19th & 20th December, 2020.

Main Weather Observations

♦ Rain/Thundershowers observed (from 0830 hours IST to 1730 hours IST of yesterday): at a few places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal and Lakshadweep; at isolated places over Kerala, Rayalaseema, Arunachal Pradesh, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Andaman & Nicobar islands.

Rainfall recorded (from 0830 hours IST to 1730 hours IST of yesterday) (1 cm or more): Puducherry-3.

♦ Thunderstorm observed (from 0830 hours IST of yesterday to 0530 hours IST of today): at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal and Kerala & Mahe.

♦ Fog observed (at 0530 hours IST of today): Dense to very Dense Fog in some pockets over Punjab and Dense Fog in isolated pockets over Uttarakhand, West Uttar Pradesh and Tripura.

Visibility (200 m of less) (at 0530 hours IST of today): Patiala-25 m; Amritsar, Dehradun, Bareilly and Kailashahar-200 m each.

♦ Yesterday, Severe Cold Day conditions were observed at most places over West Uttar Pradesh; at many places over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi; at a few places over Punjab and at isolated places over West Rajasthan. Cold Day conditions were also observed at a few places over Punjab and West Rajasthan; at isolated places over Haryana, East Rajasthan, West Madhya Pradesh, Jammu division and Himachal Pradesh.

Yesterday, Cold Wave conditions in some pockets with Severe Cold Wave in isolated pockets were observed over West Rajasthan; Severe Cold Wave conditions in isolated pockets over East Rajasthan and Cold Wave conditions in isolated pockets over south Haryana, Delhi and West Uttar Pradesh.

Maximum Temperature Departures as on 17-12-2020: Maximum temperatures were above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at a few places over Konkan &

Goa, Marathwada and Coastal Karnataka; at many places over North Interior Karnataka, Odisha and Telangana; at isolated places over Madhya Maharashtra and Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam. They were markedly below normal (-5.1°C or less) at most places over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and West Uttar Pradesh; at many places over West Uttar Pradesh and West Rajasthan; at a few places over Punjab and Uttarakhand; appreciably below normal (-3.1°C to -5.0°C) at most places over Gujarat Region, East Rajasthan and East Uttar Pradesh; at many places over Saurashtra & Kutch and East Madhya Pradesh; at a few places over Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan & Muzaffarabad; at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal &

Sikkim; below normal (-1.6°C to -3.0°C) at many places over Bihar and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal; at a few places over Andaman & Nicobar Islands; at isolated places over Kerala & Mahe and and near normal over rest parts of the country. Yesterday, the highest maximum temperature of 35.8°C was reported at Karwar (Coastal Karnataka) over the country.

Minimum Temperature Departures as on 17-12-2020: Minimum temperatures were markedly above normal (5.0°C or more) at many places over Chhattisgarh; at a few places over Marathwada, East Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha; at isolated places over West Madhya Pradesh and Madhya Maharashtra;

appreciably above normal (3.1°C to 5.0°C) at most places over Jharkhand and Rayalseema; at many places over Odisha, Karnataka, Telangana and Assam &

Meghalaya; at a few places over Gangetic West Bengal and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura; above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at most place over Arunachal Pradesh and Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam; at many places over Bihar, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Telangana, Kerala & Mahe, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Konkan & Goa. They were markedly below normal (-5.0°C or less) at isolated places over Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit- Baltistan & Muzaffarabad and Himachal Pradesh; appreciably below normal (-3.1°C to -5.0°C) at a few places over West Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh and at isolated places over East Rajasthan, East Uttar Pradesh, Saurashtra & Kutch and Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi; below normal (-1.6°C to -3.0°C) at a few places over Punjab and Uttarakhand and near normal over rest parts of the country. Yesterday, the lowest minimum temperature of 0.5°C was reported at Sikar (East Rajasthan) over the plains of the country.

Meteorological Analysis (Based on 0530 hours IST)

♦ The cyclonic circulation over Comorin area & adjoining Sri Lanka between 2.1 km & 3.6 km above mean sea level persists.

♦ A fresh feeble Western Disturbance is likely to affect Western Himalayan region from 20th December, 2020.

Weather Forecast for next 5 days * upto 0830 hours IST of 23rd December, 2020

♦ Meteorological sub-division wise detailed 5 days precipitation forecast is given in Table-1.

♦ No significant change in minimum and maximum temperatures over Northwest India during next 2 days and rise by 2-3°C in minimum temperatures and 5-6°C in maximum temperatures during subsequent 3 days.

SIGNIFICANT WEATHER FEATURES

➢ Movement of two Western Disturbances and their induced cyclonic circulations in quick succession has caused fairly widespread to widespread rainfall/snowfall/ thunderstorm activity over Western Himalayan Region and isolated to scattered rainfall/thunderstorm activity over adjoining plains of Northwest India during the week; isolated hailstorm activity also had been reported from Uttarakhand during the passage of these systems.

➢ Movement of easterly waves has caused scattered to fairly widespread rainfall/thunderstorm activity over Andaman & Nicobar Islands and isolated to scattered rainfall/thunderstorm activity over extreme south Peninsula and Lakshadweep islands during the week.

➢ Confluence of northwesterlies and southeasterlies in the lower tropospheric levels has caused isolated to scattered rainfall/thunderstorm activity over West and Central India during the week.

➢ Remnants of Western Disturbances have caused isolated to scattered rainfall/thunderstorm activity over Northeast and adjoining areas of East India during the week.

➢ Last week’s Low Pressure Area over Southeast Arabian Sea lay over Southeast and adjoining Southwest Arabian Sea in the beginning of the week after which it shifted slightly westwards and lay over central parts of South Arabian Sea on 11th and over central parts of South Arabian Sea & adjoining areas of Central Arabian Sea on 12th before getting less marked on 13th December 2020; since this system and its associated cyclonic circulation had been away from Indian coast, it has not caused any adverse weather activity over Indian coast.

Heavy Rainfall:

♦ Heavy rainfall at isolated places had been occurred over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikkal on one day during the week.

Fog:

♦ Dense to very dense fog had been occurred at most places over Punjab on one day; at a few places over East Uttar Pradesh on three days and over Punjab, West Rajasthan, Bihar and Odisha on one day each; at isolated places over West Uttar Pradesh on five days, over West Rajasthan and Punjab on two days each and over Madhya Maharashtra and Odisha on one day each during the week.

♦ Dense fog had been occurred at many places over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi on one day; at a few places over Gangetic West Bengal on one day; at isolated places over Bihar and Sub Himalayan West Bengal

& Sikkim on six days each, over Assam & Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura on five days each, over Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Jammu & Kashmir & Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, West Rajasthan and West Madhya Pradesh on three days each, over Uttarakhand, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and Madhya Maharashtra on two days each, over Punjab, East Rajasthan, South Interior Karnataka, East Uttar Pradesh, Chattisgarh, northern parts of Konakan & Goa, Coastal Karnataka and West Uttar Pradesh on one day each during the week.

Temperature Scenario:

Cold Day:

♦ Cold day to severe cold day conditions had been occurred at many places over Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi on one day each; at a few places over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and West Rajasthan on one day each; at isolated places over Jammu division on one day during the week.

♦ Cold day conditions at a few places with severe cold day conditions at isolated places had been occurred over Punjab on one day during the week.

♦ Cold day conditions at many places had been occurred over West Uttar Pradesh on one day; at isolated places over East & West Uttar Pradesh and northern parts of Rajasthan on one day each during the week.

Cold Wave:

♦ Cold wave conditions had been occurred at isolated places over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi on one day during the week.

♦ The lowest minimum temperature of 2.0oC had been recorded at Amritsar (Punjab) on 16th December 2020 over the plains of the country during the week.

METEOROLOGICALANALYSIS

♦ Last week’s Western Disturbance as a trough in mid & upper tropospheric westerlies with its axis between 3.1 &

5.8 km above mean sea level ran roughly along Long. 62°E to the north of Lat. 25°E on 10th December 2020; it was seen as a cyclonic circulation over Afghanistan & neighbourhood between 3.1 and 4.5 km above mean sea level with a trough aloft with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level, roughly along Long. 62°E to the north of Lat.

22°N on 11th; it lay as a cyclonic circulation over north Pakistan & adjoining areas of Punjab extending upto 3.1 km above mean sea level, with a trough aloft with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level roughly along Long.

64°E to the north of Lat. 25°N on 12th; the cyclonic circulation associated with the Western Disturbance persisted over north Pakistan & adjoining areas of Punjab and extended between 1.5 & 2.1 km above mean sea level whereas the trough aloft with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level ran roughly along Long. 67°E to the north of Lat. 25°N on 13th; the cyclonic circulation associated with the Western Disturbance has become less marked and the associated trough aloft with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level has moved away northeastwards on 14th December 2020.

♦ Last week’s another Western disturbance as a trough in mid-tropospheric westerlies with its axis at 3.1 km above mean sea level roughly along Long. 58°E to the north of Lat. 25°E has moved ahead and merged with the above mentioned Western Disturbance on 10th December 2020.

♦ Last week’s Low Pressure Area over Southeast Arabian Sea lay over Southeast and adjoining Southwest Arabian Sea with the associated cyclonic circulation extending upto 4.5 km above mean sea level on 10th December 2020; it lay over central parts of South Arabian Sea with the associated cyclonic circulation extending upto 3.1 km above mean sea level on 11th and over central parts of South Arabian Sea & adjoining areas of Central Arabian Sea on 12th; the Low Pressure Area has become less marked; however, its associated cyclonic circulation lay over central parts of South Arabian Sea & adjoining areas of Central Arabian Sea and extended upto 3.1 km above mean sea level on 13th and 14th; it lay over central parts of South Arabian Sea & adjoining areas of Central Arabian Sea and was seen at 1.5 km above mean sea level on 15th; it has become less marked on 16th December 2020.

♦ Last week’s cyclonic circulation over Haryana & neighbourhood extending upto 1.5 km above mean sea level persisted over the same area on 10th December 2020; it has become less marked on 11th December 2020.

♦ An induced cyclonic circulation lay over southwest Rajasthan & neighbourhood and extended upto 0.9 km above mean sea level on 11th December 2020; it lay over northeast Rajasthan & neighbourhood and extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 12th;it has become less marked on 13th December 2020.

♦ A cyclonic circulation lay over north Madhya Maharashtra at 0.9 km above mean sea level on 11th December 2020; it has become less marked on 12th December 2020.

♦ A cyclonic circulation lay over East Bangladesh & neighbourhood and extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 12th December 2020; it has become less marked on 13th December 2020.

♦A trough ran from the cyclonic circulation over central parts of South Arabian Sea & adjoining areas of Central Arabian Sea to Southwest Madhya Pradesh across Eastcentral Arabian Sea & South Gujarat coast and extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 13th December 2020; it has become less marked on 14th December 2020.

♦ A cyclonic circulation lay over Southeast Bay of Bengal between 3.1 & 5.8 km above mean sea level on 13th December 2020; it lay over Southeast Bay of Bengal & adjoining Equatorial Indian Ocean between 3.1 & 4.5 km above mean sea level on 14th; it has become unimportant on 15th December 2020.

♦ A Western Disturbance as a cyclonic circulation lay over Afghanistan & neighbourhood between 3.1 & 4.5 km above mean sea level with a trough aloft in mid & upper tropospheric westerlies with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level roughly along Long. 64°E to the north of Lat. 25°N on 14th December 2020; it lay as a cyclonic circulation over north Pakistan & neighbourhood between 3.1 & 5.8 km above mean sea level with a trough aloft in upper tropospheric westerlies with its axis at 7.6 km above mean sea level roughly along Long. 70°E to the north of Lat. 28°N on 15th; it lay as a cyclonic circulation over north Pakistan & adjoining Jammu & Kashmir between 3.1 km & 4.5 km above mean sea level with a trough aloft in mid & upper tropospheric westerlies with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level roughly along Long. 72°E to the north of Lat. 28°N on 16th December 2020.

♦ A trough ran from Eastcentral Arabian Sea off Maharashtra coast to southwest Madhya Pradesh across south Gujarat at 0.9 Km above mean sea level on 14th December 2020; it has become less marked on 15th December 2020.

♦ A cyclonic circulation lay over south Rajasthan at 1.5 km above mean sea level on 14th December 2020; it lay over southwest Rajasthan & adjoining areas of Gujarat at 1.5 km above mean sea level on 15th; it has become less marked on 16th December 2020.

♦ A cyclonic circulation lay over Southwest Bay of Bengal off Srilanka coast and extended upto 2.1 km above mean sea level on 14th December 2020; it persisted over the same area and was seen at 1.5 km above mean sea level on 15th; it lay over Comorin area & adjoining Sri Lanka between 2.1 km & 3.1 km above mean sea level on 16th December 2020.

♦ A cyclonic circulation lay over central Parts of Madhya Pradesh at 1.5 km above mean sea level on 15th December 2020; it has become less marked on 16th December 2020.
