MORNING Time of Issue: 0815 hours IST ALL INDIA WEATHER SUMMARY AND FORECAST BULLETIN

Significant Weather Features

Wet spell over Western Himalayan Region and plains of Northwest India:

• A Western Disturbance as a trough roughly along Long. 59°E and to the north of Lat. 27°N at 3.1 km above mean sea level.

Under the influence of the above system:

1) Isolated to scatted rainfall/snowfall very likely over Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan & Muzaffarabad and Himachal Pradesh from 24th to 25th December.

2) Isolated rainfall very likely over Punjab, Haryana & Chandigarh from 24th to 25th December.

A fresh intense Western Disturbance and its induced cyclonic circulation is very likely to influence northwest India from 26th and central India from 27th December. Under their influence;

1) Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall/snowfall very likely over Western Himalayan Region on 26th to 28th and isolated to scatted on 29th December.

Isolated heavy rainfall/snowfall over Jammu & Kashmir on 26th & 27th and Himachal Pradesh on 27th December.

2) Light/moderate scattered to fairly widespread rainfall is very likely over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and Uttar Pradesh and isolated rainfall over Rajasthan on 26th & 27th and over Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Bihar and Jharkhand during 27th to 29th December.

3) Isolated Hailstorm also likely over Jammu division, lower Himachal Pradesh, northern parts of Punjab & Haryana on 26th and over Uttarakhand

& northwest Uttar Pradesh on 26th & 27th December, 2021.

Minimum Temperatures and Fog:

• Gradual rise in minimum temperatures by 2-3°C very likely over most parts of Northwest, East & Central India during next 24 hours and no significant change thereafter.

Dense fog in the morning hours in isolated pockets very likely over Punjab, Haryana and northeast India on 25th and over northwest Rajasthan on 25th &

26th December, 2021.

No Cold Wave Conditions likely to prevail over the country during next 7 days.

Main Weather Observations

♦ Rainfall observed (from 0830 hours IST to 1730 hours IST of today): at isolated places over Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad and Andaman & Nicobar Islands..

♦ Significant amount of Rainfall (from 0830 hours IST to 1730 hours IST of today)(1 cm or more): Nil.

Fog observed (at 0530 hours IST of today): Moderate fog in isolated pockets over East Uttar Pradesh and Delhi and Shallow fog in isolated pockets over West Rajasthan, West Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.

Visibility recorded (at 0530 hours IST of today) (500m or less): Delhi(Safdarjung) and Lucknow -200; and Ganganagar, Bareilly, Purnea-500.

♦ Yesterday, Cold Wave Conditions prevailed in isolated pockets over Odisha.

♦ Minimum Temperature Departures (as on 23-12-2021): Minimum temperatures were appreciably above normal (3.1°C to 5.0°C) at many places over West Rajasthan; above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at many places over Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan & Muzaffarabad; at a few places over Himachal Pradesh and Saurashtra & Kutch; at isolated places over Punjab, East Rajasthan and Madhya Maharashtra. They were appreciably below normal (- 3.1°C to -5.0°C) at many places over Telangana; at a few places over Bihar, Odisha, East Madhya Pradesh, Vidharbha and Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam;

at isolated places over Gangetic West Bengal, West Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh; below normal (-1.6°C to -3.0°C) at most places over Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh; at many places over Rayalaseema and Interior Karnataka; at a few places over Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal and Andaman & Nicobar Islands; at isolated places over Gujarat Region, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim and Assam & Meghalaya and near normal over rest parts of the country. Yesterday, the Lowest minimum temperature of 4.0°C reported at Meerut (West Uttar Pradesh) & Kanpur (East Uttar Pradesh) over the plains of the country.

Maximum Temperature Departures (as on 23-12-2021): Maximum temperatures were above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at many places over East Rajastha;

at a few places over West Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and South Interior Karnataka and at isolated places over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Madhya Maharashtra, North Interior Karnataka, Telangana, Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Tamilnadu, Puducherry

& Karaikal and Assam & Meghalaya. They were below normal (-1.6°C to -3.0°C) at a few places over Gangetic West Bengal and at isolated places over East Uttar Pradesh, Saurashtra & Kutch, Konkan & Goa, Odisha and Andaman & Nicobar Islands and near normal at rest parts of the country. Yesterday, the highest maximum temperature of 33.5°C was reported at Cannur (north Kerala).

♦ The Western Disturbance as a trough in westerlies roughly along Long. 59°E to the north of Lat. 27°N at 3.1 km above mean sea level persists.

♦ The induced cyclonic circulation over northwest Rajasthan & neighbourhood extending upto 1.5 km above mean sea level persists.

♦ The cyclonic circulation over southeast Bangladesh & neighbourhood at 0.9 km above mean sea level persists.

♦ Another intense Western Disturbances likely to affect Western Himalayan Region & adjoining plains of Northwest India from 26th December.

♦ The Western Disturbance over Jammu & Kashmir at 3.1 km above mean sea level has moved away east-northeastwards.

Weather Forecast for next 5 days * upto 0830 hours IST of 29th December, 2021

♦ Meteorological sub-division wise detailed 5 days precipitation forecast is given in Table-1.

♦ Gradual rise in minimum temperatures by 2-3°C very likely over most parts of Northwest, Central, West & East India during next 24 hours and no significant change thereafter.

♦ No significant change in minimum temperatures over rest parts of the country during next 4-5 days.

Weather Outlook for subsequent 2 days From 29th December, 2021 to 31st December, 2021

♦ Light/moderate isolated to scattered rainfall/snowfall over Western Himalayan Region.

♦ Light/moderate scattered to fairly widespread rainfall likely over East Uttar Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim.

♦ Mainly dry weather likely over remaining parts of the country.

24 December (Day 1): ♦ Dense fog in isolated pockets very likely over Punjab, Haryana, Northwest Rajasthan, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura.

25 December (Day 2): ♦ Dense fog in isolated pockets very likely over Northwest Rajasthan.

26 December (Day 3): Heavy rainfall/snowfall at isolated places likely over Jammu & Kashmir.

Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning & hail at isolated places likely over Jammu division, Uttarakhand, lower Himachal Pradesh, north Haryana, northwest Uttar Pradesh and north Punjab.

27 December (Day 4): Heavy rainfall/snowfall at isolated places likely over Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh.

Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning & hail at isolated places likely over Uttarakhand and northwest Uttar Pradesh.

28 December (Day 5):Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning & hail at isolated places likely over East Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Vidrabha.

SIGNIFICANTWEATHERFEATURES

♦A Low pressure area lay over Southeast Bay of Bengal & adjoining Equatorial Indian Ocean during 17-19 December 2021; Moving east-northeastwards, it lay as a Well Marked Low Pressure Area over South Andaman Sea off north Sumatra coast on 20th December 2021 and it persisted with the same intensity over South Andaman Sea and neighbourhood till getting weakened into a Low Pressure Area over northern parts of Malacca strait & neighbourhood in the evening of 21st and thus becoming unimportant for Indian region; this Low pressure system along with its associated cyclonic circulation extending upto midtropospheric levels have caused isolated to scattered rainfall/thunderstorm activity over Andaman & Nicobar Islands on two to three days during the week; in its initial stages as a cyclonic circulation over Equatorial Indian Ocean to the south of Sri Lanka in the earlier part of the week, it has also caused isolated rainfall/thunderstorm activity over South Peninsula on one or two days.

♦Movement of Western Disturbance has caused isolated rainfall/thunderstorm activity over parts of Western Himalayan Region on one or two days during the week.

♦Under the influence of dry northwesterly winds, cold wave to severe cold wave conditions had been realized over parts of Northwest India and adjoining areas of Central India with sub zero minimum temperatures getting recorded over northern parts of Rajasthan on two to three days during the week.

Heavy rain: NIL Fog:

♦Dense to very dense fog at a few places had occurred over Punjab on one day and at isolated places over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and over northern parts of Rajasthan on one day each during the week.

♦Dense fog at isolated places had occurred over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and Uttarakhand on two days each;

over Punjab, Jammu Kashmir & Ladakh, Bihar and East Uttar Pradesh on one day each during the week.

Temperature Scenario:

Cold Day

♦Cold day to Severe Cold day conditions at a few places had occurred over East & West Madhya Pradesh on one day each during the week.

♦Cold day conditions at isolated places had occurred over East Madhya Pradesh on four days; over West Madhya Pradesh on three days; over East & West Uttar Pradesh on two days each; over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, East & West Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal on one day each during the week.

Cold Wave

♦Cold wave to Severe cold wave conditions at a few places had occurred over East Rajasthan on three days; over Punjab and West Rajasthan on two days each; over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, East & West Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha and Odisha on one day each during the week.

♦Cold wave to Severe cold wave conditions at isolated places had occurred over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and West Rajasthan on two days each; over Saurashtra & Kutch, West Madhya Pradesh, East Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and Odisha on one day each during the week.

♦Cold wave conditions at a few places had occurred over Punjab, Jammu Kashmir & Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, East Madhya Pradesh, East & West Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Odisha on one day each during the week.

♦Cold wave conditions at isolated places had occurred over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, West Madhya Pradesh, East Rajasthan, East Madhya Pradesh and West Uttar Pradesh on three days each; over West Rajasthan, Jammu Kashmir & Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, East Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Telengana on two days each;

over Saurashtra & Kutch, Vidabha, Bihar, Jharkhand and Gangetic West Bengal on one day each during the week.

♦The highest maximum temperature of 35.9oC had been recorded at Cannur( Kerala &Mahe) on 17th December 2021 and the lowest minimum temperature of -2.6 oC had been recorded at Churu (West Rajasthan) on 19th December 2021 over the plains of the country during the week.

METEOROLOGICALANALYSIS

♦ Last week’s Western Disturbance as a cyclonic circulation over Afghanistan and neighbourhood lay over north Pakistan & neighbourhood and was seen between 3.1 & 7.6 km above mean sea level on 16th December 2021; it lay over Jammu & neighbourhood between 2.1 & 7.6 km above mean sea level on 17th; it lay over Uttarakhand &

neighbourhood between 2.1 & 7.6 km above mean sea level on 18th; it lay over central parts of north Uttar Pradesh between 1.5 & 5.8 km above mean sea level on 19th; it lay over Bihar & adjoining East Uttar Pradesh between 1.5 & 3.1 km above mean sea level on 20th; it lay over Bangladesh between 1.5 & 3.1 km above mean sea level on 21st; it lay over south Bangladesh and extended upto 3.1 km above mean sea level on 22nd December 2021.

♦ Last week’s Western Disturbance as a cyclonic circulation at 3.1 km above mean sea level over Jammu &

neighbourhood has merged with the Western Disturbance which lay as a cyclonic circulation over north Pakistan &

neighbourhood between 3.1 & 7.6 km above mean sea level on 16th December 2021.

♦ Last week’s cyclonic circulation over Equatorial Indian Ocean to the south of Sri Lanka persisted over the same region and extended upto 5.8 km above mean sea level on 16th December 2021; it lay over Equatorial Indian Ocean &

adjoining central parts of South Bay of Bengal extending upto 5.8 km above mean sea level on 17th ; Under its influence, a Low Pressure Area has formed over Southeast Bay of Bengal & adjoining Equatorial Indian Ocean with the associated cyclonic circulation extending upto 5.8 km above mean sea level in the afternoon of the same day; the Low pressure area persisted over Southeast Bay of Bengal & adjoining Equatorial Indian Ocean with the associated cyclonic circulation extending upto 5.8 km above mean sea level on 18th and 19th; it lay as a Well Marked Low Pressure Area over South Andaman Sea off north Sumatra coast with the associated cyclonic circulation extending upto 5.8 km above mean sea level in the early morning hours of 20th and it persisted over the same region in the remaining part of the day; it lay over South Andaman Sea & adjoining Malacca Strait with the associated cyclonic circulation extending upto 5.8 km above mean sea level on 21st; it has weakened into a Low Pressure Area over northern parts of Malacca strait & neighbourhood with the associated cyclonic circulation extending upto 5.8 km above mean sea level in the evening of the same day and has become unimportant for the Indian region.

♦Last week’s cyclonic circulation over north Haryana & neighbourhood at 1.5 km above mean sea level has become less marked on 16th December 2021.

♦ A Western Disturbance was seen as a cyclonic circulation over north Pakistan & neighbourhood extending upto 3.1 km above mean sea level on 21st December 2021; it persisted as a cyclonic circulation over the same region and extended between 1.5 km & 3.1 km above mean sea level on 22nd December 2021.
