Significant Weather Features

♦ A fresh Western Disturbance as a trough in mid tropospheric westerlies with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level runs roughly along Long. 58°E to the north of Lat. 32°N. Under its influence, scattered to fairly widespread rain/snow likely over Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan & Muzaffarabad and Himachal Pradesh and isolated rain/snow over Uttarakhand during 22nd-24th and very light/light rain/thundershower likely at isolated places over Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh

& Delhi on 23rd January, 2021. Heavy rain/snow very likely at isolated places over Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit- Baltistan & Muzaffarabad on 23rd January, 2021. Isolated thunderstorm with lightning & hail also likely over Jammu &

Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan & Muzaffarabad on 22nd and over Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on 23rd January, 2021.

♦ Rise in minimum temperatures by 2-4°C very likely during next 48 hours (23rd-24th January) and fall by 2-4°C during subsequent 48 hours (25th-26th January) over the plains of Northwest India.

Dense to very dense Fog in isolated pockets very likely over Assam & Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram &

Tripura during 23rd-26th and over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal during morning hours of 23rd January, 2021.

Main Weather Observations

Rain/Thundershowers observed (during 0830-1730 hours IST of yesterday): at isolated places over Arunachal Pradesh, Assam &

Meghalaya and Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal.

Rainfall recorded (during 0830-1730 hours IST of yesterday) (1 cm or more): Nil.

Fog observed (at 0530 hours IST of today): Dense to Very dense fog reported in some pockets over East Uttar Pradesh; in isolated pockets over Punjab, Bihar, Sub- Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Assam & Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura;

Dense fog in isolated pockets over Haryana & Chandigarh and Moderate fog in isolated pockets over Delhi.

Visibility (at 0530 hours IST of today) (500 meter or less): Patiala, Gorakhpur, Bhagalpur, Malda- 25 each; Amritsar, Baharaich, Lucknow, Sultanpur, Varanasi, Purnea, Agartala and Dibrugarh- 50 each; Ambala, Chandigarh, Patna- 200 each; Delhi (Safdarjung), Bareilly and Silchar -500.

Maximum Temperature Departures as on 21-01-2021: Maximum temperatures were markedly above normal (5.1°C or more) at a few places over Himachal Pradesh an West Rajasthan; appreciably above normal (3.1°C to 5.0°C) at isolated places over Gujarat state, West Madhya Pradesh, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam and Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal; above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at most places over East Rajasthan, Jharkhand and South Interior Karnataka; at many places over East Madhya Pradesh, North Interior Karnataka, Rayalseema and Telangana; at a few places over Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Coastal Karnataka and Vidarbha and at isolated places over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Kerala & Mahe and Madhya Maharashtra. They were markedly below normal (- 5.1°C or less) at isolated places over East Uttar Pradesh; appreciably below normal (-3.1°C to -5.0°C) at many places over Assam

& Meghalaya and at a few places over Arunachal Pradesh; below normal (-1.6°C to -3.0°C) at a few places over West Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and at isolated places over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim and near normal over rest parts of the country. Yesterday, the highest maximum temperature of 36.0°C is reported at Madurai (Tamil Nadu) over the country.

♦ Minimum Temperature Departures as on 21-01-2021: Minimum temperatures were markedly above normal (5.1°C or more) at a few places over Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur & Tripura; appreciably above normal (3.1°C to 5.0°C) at many places over Marathawada and Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal; at a few places over Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Madhya Maharashtra; at isolated places over Assam

& Meghalaya; above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at most places over Kerala & Mahe; at many places over Gujarat Region and Vidarbha; at a few places over West Bengal & Sikkim, East Madhya Pradesh and Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam; at isolated places over Rayalaseema. They were appreciably below normal (-3.1°C to -5.0°C) at a few places over Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgistan, Baltistan & Muzaffrabad; below normal (-1.6°C to -3.0°C) at a few places over East Rajasthan and Saurashtra & Kutch; at isolated places over West Rajasthan and near normal over rest parts of the country. Yesterday, the lowest minimum temperature of 3.4°C reported at Amritsar (Punjab) over the plains of the country.

♦ A fresh Western Disturbance as a trough in mid tropospheric westerlies with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level runs roughly along Long. 58°E to the north of Lat. 32°N .

♦ The cyclonic circulation over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & neighbourhood between 3.1 km & 3.6 km above mean sea level persists.

♦ The cyclonic circulation over northeast Bangladesh & neighbourhood extending upto 0.9 km above mean sea level persists.

♦ The cyclonic circulation over south Gujarat & neighbourhood extending upto 1.5 km above mean sea level persists.

Weather Forecast for next 5 days * upto 0830 hours IST of 27th January, 2021

♦ Meteorological sub-division wise detailed 5 days precipitation forecast is given in Table-1.

♦ Rise in minimum temperatures by 2-4°C very likely during next 48 hours (23rd-24th January) and fall by 2-4°C during subsequent 48 hours (25th-26th January) over the plains of Northwest India.

22 January (Day 1):Dense to Very Dense Fog in isolated pockets very likely over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Dense Fog in isolated pockets over East Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Assam & Meghalaya and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura.

Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning & hail at isolated places very likely over Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit- Baltistan & Muzaffarabad.

Strong Winds (speed reaching 45-55 kmph) very likely over Northwest Arabian Sea. Fishermen are advised not to venture into this area.

SIGNIFICANT WEATHER FEATURES

♦ Northeast Monsoon rains have ceased over Tamilnadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Kerala & Mahe and adjoining areas of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka from 19

January 2021.

♦ Movement of easterly waves has caused isolated to scattered rainfall/thunderstorms over extreme south Peninsula, Andaman & Nicobar and Lakshadweep islands during the week; it has also caused isolated intense to very intense rainfall activity over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikkal on one or two days in the beginning of the week.

♦ Remnants of Western Disturbance have caused isolated to scattered rainfall/thunderstorm activity over parts of Northeast India and Sub Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim towards the end of the week.

Heavy Rainfall:

♦ Heavy to very heavy rainfall had occurred at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikkal on one day during the week.

♦ Heavy rainfall had occurred at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikkal on one day during the week.

Fog:

♦ Dense to very dense fog had occurred at most places over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, East and West Uttar Pradesh on one day each; at many places over Punjab, East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar on two days each and over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, Sub Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim and West Rajasthan on one day each; at a few places over East & West Uttar Pradesh on two days each and over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Sub Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, West Rajasthan and Bihar on one day each; at isolated places over Punjab, West Rajasthan and West Madhya Pradesh on three days each, over West Uttar Pradesh and East Madhya Pradesh on two days each and over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, East Uttar Pradesh, Sub Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, East Rajasthan , Bihar, Assam & Meghalaya and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikkal on one day each during the week.

♦ Dense fog had occurred at most places over Punjab on one day; at a few places over Haryana, Chandigarh

& Delhi on three days and over Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam

& Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura and Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam on one day each;

at isolated places over Assam & Meghalaya on three days, over Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura and Uttarakhand on two days each and over Jharkhand, Odisha, Jammu Kashmir & Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Sub Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim and East Uttar Pradesh on one day each during the week.

Temperature Scenario:

Cold Day

♦ Cold day to severe cold day conditions had occurred at many places over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and Punjab on one day each; at isolated places over Bihar and West Rajasthan on three days each, over East Uttar Pradesh on two days and over Punjab and West Uttar Pradesh on one day each during the week.

♦ Cold day conditions at many places with severe cold day conditions at isolated places had occurred over Bihar on one day during the week.

♦ Cold day conditions had occurred at isolated places over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi on four days, over Punjab and East Uttar Pradesh on two days each and over West Rajasthan, West Uttar Pradesh and Bihar on one day each during the week.

Cold Wave

♦ Cold wave to severe cold wave conditions had occurred at isolated places over East and West Rajasthan on one day each during the week.

♦ Cold wave conditions had occurred at many places over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi and East &

West Uttar Pradesh on one day each; at isolated places over East Madhya Pradesh and Odisha on three days each, over Punjab, West Uttar Pradesh, West Madhya Pradesh and Gangetic West Bengal on two days each and over East Uttar Pradesh and East & West Rajasthan on one day each during the week.

♦ The lowest minimum temperature of 1.8

♦ Last week’s trough of Low at mean sea level from Comorin-Maldives area to Lakshadweep area has become less marked; however, the cyclonic circulation over Comorin-Maldives area which lay embedded in that trough in the last week lay over Southeast Arabian Sea and adjoining Maldives area and extended upto 5.8 km above mean sea level with a trough from this circulation to Comorin area with its vertical extension upto 1.5 km above mean level on 14

th

January 2021; The cyclonic circulation lay over central parts of South Arabian Sea and adjoining Equatorial Indian Ocean and extended upto 5.8 km above mean sea level with a trough from this circulation to Comorin area with its vertical extension upto 1.5 km above mean level on 15

; the cyclonic circulation over central parts of South Arabian Sea and adjoining Equatorial Indian Ocean persisted over the same area and extended upto 4.5 km above mean sea level with the trough from this circulation to Comorin area with its vertical extension upto 1.5 km above mean level on 16
