Friday 20 January 2023 MORNING Time of Issue: 0730 hours IST ALL INDIA WEATHER SUMMARY AND FORECAST BULLETIN

Significant Weather Features

Weather Systems and associated rainfall/snowfall:

A Western Disturbance as a trough in middle tropospheric westerlies runs along 72°E to the north of 30°N. Under its influence, light/moderate scattered rainfall/snowfall very likely over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on 20th January, 2023. Isolated light rainfall also likely over north Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi on 20th January, 2023.

⇒ Another active Western Disturbance now seen as a trough in middle & upper tropospheric westerlies along Long. 60°E to the north of Lat. 25°N. It is very likely to affect Western Himalayan Region from the night of 20th till 26th and plains of northwest India during 23rd to 25th January, 2023.

i) Under its influence, light/moderate isolated to scattered rainfall/snowfall over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand on 20th-22nd. Its intensity & distribution is likely to increase thereafter with scattered to widespread rainfall/snowfall during 23rd to 26th with its peak intensity with possibility of heavy rainfall/snowfall on 23rd to 25th January, 2023.

ii) Isolated hailstorm also likely over Western Himalayan Region on 23rd & 24th January, 2023.

iii) Light/moderate isolated to scattered rainfall/thundershower is likely over Punjab, Haryana & Chandigarh, north Rajasthan and West Uttar Pradesh during 23rd to 26th and over Delhi on 23rd to 25th January, 2023.

Fog Warning:

⇒ Dense fog very likely in isolated pockets during night & morning hours over Odisha, Assam & Meghalaya and Tripura during 20th- 21st January, 2023.

Main Weather Observations

Rainfall/snowfall observed (from 0830 hrs IST to 1730 hours IST of yesterday): at isolated places over Jammu & Kashmir and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Rainfall observed (from 0830 hrs IST to 1730 hours IST of yesterday): Nancowry-1.

♦ Yesterday, Cold wave conditions in isolated pockets prevailed over south Haryana, East Rajasthan, north Madhya Pradesh and Bihar.

Fog observed (at 0530 hours IST of today): Shallow to Moderate Fog in isolated pockets over East Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and Shallow Fog in isolated pockets over Jammu & Kashmir, West Uttar Pradesh and Assam.

Visibility recorded (at 0530 hours IST of today): East Uttar Pradesh: Varanasi-200, Lucknow & Prayagraj-500 each; Bihar: Purnea- 200, Patna & Gaya-500 each; Jammu & Kashmir: Pahalgaon-500; West Uttar Pradesh: Bareilly-500; Assam: Tezpur-500.

Minimum Temperature Departures (as on 19-01-2023): Minimum temperatures were appreciably above normal (3.1°C to 5.0°C) at a few places over Odisha; above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at most places over Punjab, Himachal Pradesh; at many places over Chhattisgarh; at a few places over Gangetic West Bengal and Telangana. They were appreciably below normal (-3.1°C to -5.0°C ) at a few places over Andaman-Nicobar Islands; at isolated places over Madhya Pradesh; below normal (-1.6°C to -3.0°C) at most places over East Uttar Pradesh, Assam & Meghalaya; at many places over Saurashtra-Kutch, West Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram

& Tripura, Rayalaseema; at a few places over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal-Sikkim and Tamil Nadu-Puducherry-Karaikal and near normal over rest parts of the country. Yesterday, the lowest minimum temperature of 2.0°C was reported at Nowgong (East Madhya Pradesh) over plains of the country.

Maximum Temperature Departures (as on 19-01-2023): Maximum temperatures were appreciably above normal (3.1°C to 5.0°C) at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh, Saurashtra & Kutch and Vidarbha; above normal (1.6°C to 3.0°C) at a few places over Punjab, Madhya Maharashtra, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Coastal Karnataka and Kerala & Mahe and at isolated places over Telangana and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal. They were below normal (-1.6°C to -3.0°C) at many places over West Bengal &

Sikkim; at a few places over Madhya Pradesh and at isolated places over East Rajasthan, Odisha and Andaman & Nicobar Islands and near normal over rest parts of the country. Today, the highest maximum temperature of 35.5°C was reported at Kottayam and Cannur (Kerala) over the country.

Meteorological Analysis (Based on 0530 hours IST)

♦ The Western Disturbance as a trough in middle tropospheric westerlies with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level now runs roughly along Long. 72°E to the north of Lat. 30°N.

♦ The other Western Disturbance as a trough in middle tropospheric westerlies with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level roughly along Long. 60°E to the north of Lat. 25°N persists.

Weather Forecast for next 5 days * upto 0830 hours IST of 25th January, 2023

♦ Meteorological sub-division wise detailed 5 days precipitation forecast is given in Table-1.

♦ Rise in minimum temperatures by 2-4°C very likely over East India and Maharashtra during next 4-5 days.

♦ No significant change in minimum temperatures very likely over Gujarat state till 21st and fall by 2- 3°C thereafter.

♦ No significant change in minimum temperatures over the rest parts of country during next 4-5 days.

Thunderstorm accompanied with lightning very likely over Western Himalayan Region on 20th &

22nd January, 2023.

Weather Outlook for subsequent 2 days during 25th-27th January, 2023

♦ Under the influence of Western Disturbance; fairly widespread to widespread light/moderate rainfall/snowfall likely over Western Himalayan Region and isolated to scattered light/moderate rainfall over plains of Northwest India and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

♦ Dry weather likely over rest parts of the country.

Tripura.

♦ Strong wind (speed reaching 40-45 kmph) very likely over south Gulf of Mannar and adjoining

Comorin area. Fishermen are advised not to venture into these areas.

SIGNIFICANT WEATHER FEATURES

♦ The Northeast Monsoon rains have ceased over Tamil Nadu Puducherry & Karaikal, Kerala & Mahe, South Interior Karnataka, Rayalaseema and adjoining areas of Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam with effect from 12th January, 2023.

♦ Movement of a Western Disturbance had caused fairly widespread to widespread rainfall/snowfall/thunderstorm activity over Jammu Kashmir & Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh on two to three days and isolated to scattered rainfall/snowfall/thunderstorm activity over the same areas on one or two days whereas it had caused isolated to scattered rainfall/thunderstorm activity over Uttarakhand on three to four days during the week; passage of the system and its induced cyclonic circulation had caused isolated to scattered rainfall activity over Punjab and isolated rainfall activity over Haryana, Chandigarh &

Delhi on two to three days whereas isolated rainfall activity had occurred over Uttar Pradesh and West Rajasthan on one or two days along with.

♦ Remnants of the Western Disturbances had caused scattered rainfall/snowfall activity over Arunachal Pradesh on most of the days and isolated rainfall activity over Assam & Meghalaya on many days during the week; under their influence, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim also reported isolated rainfall/snowfall activity on one or two days during the week.

♦ Sub zero minimum temperatures were reported over northern parts of Rajasthan on four to five days during the week.

Fog:

♦ Dense to very dense fog had been reported at many places over Bihar, East and West Uttar Pradesh on one day each; at a few places over Bihar on one day; at isolated places over Sub Himalayan West Bengal

& Sikkim on four days, over Himachal Pradesh and East Uttar Pradesh on two days each, over Bihar, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, East Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Jammu Kashmir & Ladakh, Assam &

Meghalaya and Odisha on one day each during the week.

♦ Dense fog had been reported at isolated places over Assam & Meghalaya on five days, over Odisha on three days, over West Rajasthan, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Gangetic West Bengal on two days each, over Jammu Kashmir & Ladakh, Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, West Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Bihar and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram & Tripura on one day each during the week.

Temperature Scenario:

Cold Day

♦ Cold day to severe cold day conditions had occurred at a few places over Bihar and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim on one day each; at isolated places over Himachal Pradesh on one day during the week.

♦ Cold day conditions had occurred at isolated places over East & West Rajasthan, Haryana, Chandigarh& Delhi and Bihar on one day each during the week.

Cold Wave

♦ Cold wave to severe cold wave conditions had occurred at many places over West Rajasthan on three days and over Punjab on two days; at a few places over East Rajasthan on three days, over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi on two days and over Punjab and West Uttar Pradesh on one day each; at isolated places over West Rajasthan and East Uttar Pradesh on two days each, over Himachal Pradesh, West Uttar Pradesh and West Madhya Pradesh on one day each during the week.

♦ Cold wave conditions at most places with severe cold wave conditions at isolated places had occurred over Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi on one day each during the week.

♦ Cold wave conditions had occurred at a few places over West Madhya Pradesh on one day; at isolated places over North & South Interior Karnataka and East Madhya Pradesh on three days each, over West Madhya Pradesh on two days, over Haryana, Chandigarh & Delhi, Uttarakhand, West Uttar Pradesh and Bihar on one day each during the week.

♦ The highest maximum temperature of 35.5oC had been recorded at Kottayam (Kerala & Mahe) on 18th January 2023 and the lowest minimum temperature of -2.7oC had been recorded at Churu (West Rajasthan) on 17th January 2023 over the plains of the country during the week.

METEOROLOGICALANALYSIS

♦ Last week’s Western Disturbance was seen as a trough in middle tropospheric westerlies with its axis at 4.5 km above mean sea level roughly along Long. 68°E to the north of 28°N on 12th January 2023; it was seen as a trough in middle tropospheric westerlies with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level roughly along Long. 70°E to the north of 32°N on 13th and roughly along Long. 75°E to the north of 32°N on 14th; it has moved away east-northeastwards on 15th January 2023.

♦ Last week’s induced cyclonic circulation over central Pakistan and neighbourhood lay over north Rajasthan & neighbourhood and extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 12th January 2023; it lay over northeast Rajasthan & neighbourhood and extended upto 1.5 km above mean sea level on 13th; it has become less marked on 14th January 2023.

♦ A Western Disturbance was seen as a trough in middle tropospheric westerlies with its axis at 5.8 km above mean sea level roughly along 64°E to the north of 28°N on 17th January 2023 and roughly along 65°E to the north of 28°N on 18th January 2023.

♦ Another Western Disturbance was seen as a cyclonic circulation over west Iran & neighbourhood between 5.8 km & 7.6 km above mean sea level on 18th January 2023.
