Gas hydrate is a greatly promising source of clean natural energy in the future. According to the statistics, the hydro- carbon reserve in gas hydrate reaches 7,6 x 10'^m^. Since gas hydrate forms only in low temperature and high pres- sure environments, 98% of gas hydrate reserves lie on the bottom of continental shelves and lakes. Canada, Black Sea and Lake Baikal are considered the largest hydrate reserve regions in the world. The article presents the factors affecting the formation and distribution of gas hydrate in nature as well as the reserves and distribution of gas hy- drate in the world.
