THE HISTORY OF

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

It specifically trains students to teach children in the nursery section of the primary school, and is designed to enable the student to establish proper attitudes towards small children, understand their needs and know their abilities. The work of the kindergarten is seen in its proper perspective with preschool education and the education of middle school children. The course trains students to administer and organize school libraries, to acquire a knowledge and appreciation of children's literature, to understand children's reading habits, and to establish the library as the focal point of the school's educational program.

Selected students are granted this one-year course as an extension of the T.P.T.C. Through these experiences in the knowledge and use of the different materials and media, students gain a deeper insight into the achievements of man as artist and craftsman.

For the first two years of the course, the student spends one day a week at the college. Women can also study two minor crafts chosen from: the art of the book, weaving, leatherwork, fabric printing, pottery. One study chosen from: painting, fabric printing and weaving, the art of the book, sewing and tailoring, woodwork, metalwork.

SUBJECT DESCRIPTIONS

Health

The student becomes familiar with modern concepts of health education, which require the formation of healthy attitudes and correct habits in body care. With the well-being of the child in mind, the course deals with topics such as posture, heredity and environment, nutrition and digestion, infectious diseases and the implementation of school hygiene. The basic lectures are about the plant, animal and mineral kingdom with an emphasis on "constant observational contact with the local environment".

The methodological side of the subject takes into account the scope of nature study in primary school, and its relationship with science. The organization of the subject requires knowledge of the effective use of teaching aids—such as the observation bank, picture material and school broadcasts—and the various sources of information that are available. The aim of the study is to develop in the student a mature understanding of the social movements around him.

The consequence of this research is the way and extent of its application in the classroom.

SPECIAL STUDIES

In the second-year elective, music is developed in depth under the title "Music for Living". The parallel growth of all arts under the influence of the cultural mentality of that era will be mentioned. This includes voice training, choral and madrigal experiences, and folk-style singing while playing instruments.

More detailed demonstration and modification of the basic approaches learned in the first year; special opportunities at different grade levels and in rural schools; singing and classroom assessment. The special study of physical education in the second year maintains the basic approach, started in the first year of the course, of integrating the understanding of the theories of physical activity with the personal experience of participation. To do this intelligently and effectively, the student must be made aware of the importance of the method, both for self-improvement and for imparting skills to others.

This consists of a systematic study, along evolutionary lines, of selected members of the animal kingdom. During the course students use textbooks, reference collections, and other tools to identify many of the plant and animal specimens encountered. The knowledge thus acquired will be preserved for permanent reference in the form of properly mounted and annotated collections.

TEACHING PRACTICE

THE STUDENTSHIP

At the end of the course, the individual subject ratings and teaching practice results are converted into a single college mark that affects the student's classification and his eligibility for an extended course. To complete their courses while in the field, they must notify the principal of their intention at the beginning of the year; they will then be given the required work to be sent to the college for consideration. At the end of each year of the college course, a reclassification of all students into teachers' colleges is made on the basis of academic results and teaching ability.

After completing a college course, each graduate is given a position in Grade IV on the classified list of teachers. His subsequent promotion depends on assessments made of his teaching efficiency by school inspectors; however, he must acquire additional qualifications to advance to senior positions in his teaching service sector. Each year extended studentships are awarded to a number of students who have qualified for the Trained Primary Teacher Certificate.

Applications from all teachers' colleges in Victoria are processed by the Department of Education, and available places on the extended courses are allocated on a quota system to the most successful students with the necessary qualifications. Trained Arts and Crafts Teacher's Certificate (Primary) One year Trained Homework Teacher's Certificate (Primary) One year Trained Special Teacher's Certificate One year Trained Teacher of the Deaf's Certificate One year Trained Teacher-Librarian's Certificate One year.
