August - Membership and New Club Development Month Farewell Dr Jim McCauley 16 Sept 1931 - 30 July 2016
James Holmes McCauley was born in Northern Ireland in 1931, the eldest of six children of Dr James McCauley and his wife Annie. His brother, Roy, spoke at the Memorial Service of a close-knit family and a father respected as the local GP. Jim followed in his father’s footsteps studying medicine and mov- ing into the family practice. As a young doctor he found time to be involved in a service club, The Round Table, (like our Apex Clubs). Jim took leadership roles at local, district and finally the presidency of Northern Ireland Clubs.
Always keen for adventure he moved to Australia with his wife Doris when he was in his thirties and joined the medical practice in Hughes in 1967. At the time Hughes and Curtin were known colloquially as North Cooma and the only large building south of the Cotter Road was the newly opened Royal Australian Mint. The Woden Valley grew rapidly over the next few years. Jim took over the practice and many Rotarians and Woden Valley citizens knew him as both their doctor and as a friend. At the Memorial Service the words , ‘the beloved physician’, spoke volumes to the many present. He was truly a family GP. The Hughes Family Practice still operates from the same premises and here Jim passed on his expertise to many younger doctors.
Jim was a Charter Member of the Rotary Club of Canberra Woden and joined a keen group of Woden Valley citizens who planned the new Rotary Club. Territory was ceded by the Rotary Club of Canberra and the Club was sponsored by the Canberra East Rotary Club. The Charter was signed on 29 May 1969 and the presentation occurred on 14 June 1969.There were 23 Charter Members. Although busy with a one man practice attending Rotary every Wed. night was always a high priority for Jim.
Jim had one son, James, who was also a doctor and sadly passed away earlier this year. He is survived by his wife,
Doris, grandchildren Oliver and Stella, and his brother and four sisters. A number of Rotarians and wives, former patients, attended his Me- morial Service.

Urgent action is now required to encourage peo- ple to attend.

We need Members to actively promote the night to their friends, relatives, neighbours, work col- leagues.
Everything is in place: venue, program, organis- ers, bookmakers, … But we urgently need more punters to make this inaugural event a success.

Tonight 10 Aug 2016
District Gov. Steve Hill Partners Night
The Club’s crest & bulletin name reflect ‘Odin’ (Anglo-Saxon ‘Woden’), the ancient Nordic God of Wisdom.
Odin had two ravens called Hugin and Munin (Thought and Memory) who flew forth every day and returned at night to tell him what they had seen, so contributing to his wisdom.

Things you should know and do- dates for your diary Guest Speaker: Martin Fisk, CEO of
Our guest speaker, Martin Fisk, gave us a
detailed account of the raison d’etre and activities of Menslink (www.menslink.org.au.).
The organisation is involved with youth mentoring and counselling and works in schools and organisations.
Menslink’s Mentoring Program is where men who’ve survived their entry into the adult world provide support for young blokes – aged between 13 and 18 – who are still on their way there. Volunteer male mentors, from all walks of life, are introduced to the young men who come to our door needing a constructive influence in their lives, for one-to-one mentoring relationships. The role of a
Menslink mentor is not that of a parent-like figure or counsellor, but rather a friend or guide – a sounding board sometimes – who will be understanding and non- judgemental.
Menslink believes that young men are capable of finding solutions for their life from their own strengths and resources.
Their counselling service is about helping young men to identify and access those resources in order to bring about positive changes in their lives.
Menslink provides a safe place for young men to explore options to solve problems that may have arisen at school, at
home, with friends, their health, their money situation or even their spirituality. If needed, we can also work with parents or other significant people in his life.
All services at Menslink are free. There are no fees or charges. They’re completely confidential and are available to any young guy aged between twelve and twenty-five.
Menslink provides counselling at our offices in Holder or at selected schools and centres around Canberra.
Heads and Tails was won by Deborah Schultz.
