INTRODUCTION

1.1

The Background of the Study

Character is an essential element in the story. Since it portrays the type of

person and the attitudes that he/she usually has when he/she is in certain

situation. Moreover, a story can not exist without characters and they are powerful

to make the story seems alive and real. Characterization is the author’s way to

describing the different characters of the people.

Abrams in Nurgiyantoro(1998:165) said that characters are closely related

to the plot because characters are doing action, while action forms the plot of

literary work. It can be seen in this quotation: “Characters are the people presented in dramatic of narrative works, who are interpreted by the reader as being endowed with the moral and dispositional qualities that are expressed in what they say the dialogue and what they do in the action.” Then, Abrams grouped the characters in to two parts. First is the major character, who always

appears in most of the story. This characters decides the development of the plot

and story. And the second is the minor character, which is only put forward one or

several times in story and perhaps it is relatively in short portion of story.

Based of above explanation, we include that all of the story in film has

characters, such as in Man on Fire film which is directed by Tony Scott, has a great story with strong characterization. The story in this film is very interesting.

(14)

bodyguard of the beautiful child, Pyta. Creasy has a unique character, because

sometimes he will be a good man, but in the other hand, he will be a bad man.

The writer has chosen Tony Scott’s film Man on Fire as the subject matter of this paper because this film is different from the others; it was giving

meaningful message to the viewer.

1.2

The Scope of the Writing

The writer believes that there are many important aspects of film that can

be discussed, but in this paper she talks one of them that is character. She will

concentrate on analysis of character in two parts: major character and minor

character. Beside that, the summary of man on fire will be enclosed to help the readers know the stories about.

1.3

The Purpose of the Study

In this paper the writer wants to analyze the characterization that can be

found in Tony Scott's film Man on Fire. The writer divided the characters in film in to two parts: 1) major characters such as Creasy and Pyta, and 2) minor

characters such as Samuel, Lisa, Rayburn, Manzano, Mariana, Fuentes, Jordan,

Sister Anna, Daniel Sanchez, Aurelio Sanchez, Maria, Jorge Remirez, and Reina

Rosas. By describing every character in this film, the writer hopes this writing

(15)

1.4 The Significance of the Study

By writing this paper the writer and the reader will know the

characterization of the film. Since it is one of the most important things in shaping

and developing the figure in the story of film. Besides that, the characterization

includes the problem of the character, how it is characterized, and how it is

described in the story; so it is able to give a clear description to the viewer. More

over, characterization takes a strategic position as the bearer and gives the

message, advice and morality to its viewer. And then, the writing hopes the reader

will know the story of Man on Fire film.

1.5

The Method of the Study

In composing this paper, the writer applies library research. Clayton

(2001:XII) defines library research as “A terms which encompasses a number of

activities related to the development of the library’s collection, including the

determination and coordination of selection policy, assessment of needs of users

and potential user, collection use studies, collection evaluation, identification of

collection needs, selection of materials, planning of resource sharing, collection

maintenance and weeding”. That is done by collecting data through reading some

books that are related to the topic of this paper and browsing internet to get some

information needed to complete this paper.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

2.1

Theory of the Character

A character theory is useful for analyzing and understanding the

characterization of the actor and actress in film. Without using the character

theory, we can not analyze the characterization in film. So, to analyze the

characterization of Man on Fire film, the writer uses the character theory, names “Goffman’s Character Theory”, and the writer used books of Kennedy and

Nurgiyantoro to explain the types of the character, because Goffman’s character

theory does not explain it one by one.

Goffman’s character theory said that the author usually uses characters to

unfold the ideas in a film by using dialogues and actions. Moreover, the character

can help easily the author to convey the themes or main ideas as well as to the

readers or viewers. An author may present their characters in two generals way,

they are:

a. Directly

The most of authors find it necessary to tell their readers or viewers

directly something about the characters that they are creating. An author might tell

the readers or viewers that a character has some characteristics like blonde hair, is

thirteen years old, is falling in love to somebody, is a good guy, is nice smile, and

(18)

b. Indirectly

Some of authors want to tell their readers or viewers something

indirectly. They show that character can emerge from the way he or she speaks,

reacts, or think. So, the readers or viewers will understand about the character at

the story.

2.2

Types of Character in Film

Based on Goffman’s character theory, there are 4 main types of character

in film:

1. Major Character (leading character)

2. Minor Character (secondary character)

3. Protagonist (likes a hero)

4. Antagonist (make a conflict)

2.2.1

Major Character

We usually face several characters that are appeared in story. But each

character has different role. Based on the role and level of importance, there are

essential characters being appeared continuously and it is called major character.

A major character is a character that is emphasized to tell the story. The

major character always appears in most of the story, either as subject or as object.

(19)

also a complex one, and several adjectives will be needed to describe it. So, it

takes the important role in a story.

In major characters, the personalities of the character become familiar to

us. If the story seems “true to life”, we generally find that the characters act in

reasonably consistent manner, and that the author has provided them with

motivation, sufficient reasons to have as they do. (Kennedy, 1991:47-50).

2.2.2

Minor Character

On the other hand, there are characters that appears once or sometimes,

and maybe relatively in short portion, it is called minor character. Different from

the major character, minor character takes a small role in a story. It only appears

when there is direct and indirect parallelism with the major character in the story.

(Kennedy, 1991:50-51).

2.2.3

Protagonist

Protagonist is a character who is loved by the audience. Altenbern and

Lewis in Nurgiyantoro (1998:170) said that protagonist character likes a hero and

the audience always gives sympathy emphasis. The term “hero” does not mean

someone who is brave or noble, heroes maybe good or evil, low or high born. It

(20)

readers or viewers, popularly or she called as a hero because he or she always does ideal role and follows the rules and values in society.”

A protagonist is the main character in the story. The protagonist present

something that is adjusted with our perception and expectation and that is why we

will recognize him or her because he or she has similarity with us. In short words,

everything felt, thought and done by the character represents us. The self

identification toward the character is an empathy given by the readers or viewers.

A fiction must have a conflict and a pressure had by the protagonist.

2.2.4

Antagonist

Antagonist is a character that always makes a conflict. The antagonist can

be said as opposite of the protagonist directly or indirectly. But the conflict which

is always has by the protagonist is not only caused by the antagonist. It can be

caused by the other factors outside someone individually, such as disasters,

accidents, neighborhood and the others higher power. The cause of conflict that is

not made by a character is called antagonist force. (Nurgiyantoro, 1998:178-179).

An antagonist is the character who opposes to the protagonist, the person

that helps cause conflict for the protagonist. The protagonist may be another

person, an animal, the environment, the self internal (psychological).

(21)

3. THE CHARACTERIZATION OF MAN ON FIRE

It is not easy to analyze a film or movie. We need to do some steps to get a

good analysis. We have to watch the film for several times, so it will help us to

understand the story of the film easily. Then, we start to analyze scenes by scene

of the film. The last, we make the conclusion of our analysis to get theme of the

film.

In this chapter, the writer is going to analyze the characteristics of Man on Fire film. So it can prove that the character of the film is good to be known and without addition and reduction.

Character in film takes an important role to determine the genre of the

film. Character can easily help the author to convey the themes of the main ideas

as well as view to the viewer. An author uses character to identify the people in

the film by using dialogue and action. It portrays what kind of the person is and

what attitude her or she usually has when he or she is in certain situation. A story

can not stand alone without character and it will be powerful to make the story

seems alive and real.

Casting is the basic thing for an actor and actress before making a film to

choose the talented and right person to act certain character. It indicates the

quality of the film. The popularity of an actor or actress does not guarantee them

to get the role. Professionally the actor or actress has to be caste for certain role.

(22)

chooses the talented actors and actress, so that they play a role according to the

events.

Man on Fire shows some characters. In this paper, the writer will analyze the major character and minor character.

3.1

Major Characters

On Man on Fire, directed by Tony Scott, there are two major characters, they are Creasy, and Pita.

3.1.1

Creasy

Creasy is an American people. He has a short hair and black skin. He is

former mercenary, he is ever in counter terrorism activities for 15 years, and he

likes history. He is uninterested in life, he is alcoholic, and he does not have

family. It can be seen from this quotation:

“I’m American.”

“I’m a soldier 15 years ago.”

“I had to do my homework on them when I worked there. Also I enjoy history.”

“I like drink, thank you. Scotch and a little water.” “I do not have family.”

(Tony Scott, disk 1, 5:15)

One day Creasy comes to Juarez, Mexico, to see his friend, Rayburn.

(23)

work, because he never becomes a bodyguard before, but he needs a job. It can be

seen from this quotation:

“I want to Juarez, Mexico. I have a friend there.” “I came to visit you Rayburn.”

“I got no plans how long to stay, Rayburn. Nothing on. Just wanted to see you, how you were. Came by on impulse.”

“I’m not working for eight months. I was in Columbia looking around, but nothing seemed interesting.”

“A bodyguard has to be close to someone all the time. Willing to talk. I’m not good at that.”

“I never become bodyguard before.”

(Tony Scott, disk 1, 8:25)

Creasy takes a job as a bodyguard of Pyta, because Rayburn has suggested

him. Creasy is responsible in his work as a bodyguard. But he is not interested

with the youngster, he is not a socialization person, he is unhappy, he does not

like school, and someone who asks him much question. It can be seen from this

quotation:

“If someone kidnap your daughter, I will save her as possible as I can.” “If something happened, my reaction would be to fight to protect her. I have skills in that respect. Pyta would benefit by the fact that…I’m a soldier.”

“My coordination. Reaction time. If top professionals try to kidnap your daughter, the service will be on par with the pay.”

“I didn’t like school.”

“It wasn’t a school like yours and there was no sister Anna. It make me didn’t like school.”

“Being unhappy is a state of mind. I never thought about it.” “I’m not paid to be your friend. I’m paid to protect you.” “You are paying me to protect her, not amuse her. Right?” “No more question.”

“Look, this is a way I am. I don’t like question.” “The answer is the truth. The question is the foolish.”

(24)

If Creasy at the beginning is not a socialization person, uninterested with

the youngster, and he is not like to be friend of Pyta, slowly Pyta makes a change

for Creasy’s life. Creasy’s initial impatience slowly fades as he finds himself

opening up to the child, he does not like to drink alcohol anymore, he becomes

friend to Pyta, he becomes care about Pyta and he looks like a father for Pyta.

Because Creasy replaces her parents in their absence, giving her advice and

coaching her in her swimming lessons and competitions. He helps her overcome

her fear of starting guns, turning it into an eagerness to move at the sound of one.

It can make Pyta become a winner and she gives a necklace as a gift for Creasy.

Creasy likes the gift. It can be seen from this quotation:

“Hey Pyta…What are you doing?” “Did you sleep alright Pyta?” “I don’t drink like I used to.” “You need to practice Pyta.”

“You don’t flinch when a gun goes off; you react. You go. Don’t listen for the sound; don’t anticipate it. Concentrate on the sound itself.”

“Don’t worry. You will understand.” “The gunshot holds no fear. Say it!”

“You welcome the sound. The sound is what lets you go. The sound is what frees you. You are is a prisoner in those blocks until you hear the sound.”

“There is no such thing as tough. You’re either trained or untrained?” “Good luck Pyta. I’ll be waiting here when you are done.”

“Pinta’s parents are in Los Angeles. I was going to wait in the courtyard, but…today I’m her father.”

“Thank you Pyta. It’s beautiful.”

(Tony Scott, disk 1, 30:19)

Creasy loves Pyta. He will protect her although he must sacrifice his life.

He can become a brutal and sadist man if someone hurts Pyta. Creasy proof that

(25)

her to her piano audition. Creasy tries to save Pyta although the kidnapper shoot

him. The kidnapper desires to grab Pyta and makes Creasy seriously injured. After

Creasy awares from his crisis condition, he heard from his friend, Rayburn, that

the kidnapper kill Pyta. Creasy is angry, so he tries to find the kidnapper, and he

wants to kill them. It can be seen from this quotation:

“I love you too Pyta” “Run Pyta, run!”

“Because…I was already dead.”

“I want you to know something. I’m going to kill them. Anyone who opens their eyes at me.”

“I’ll kill them. Is that likely?”

“Can you hear me? I am going to ask question. If you don’t answer, fully and truthfully, you will suffer much more than you have to.”

“I’m going to cut your fingers off. One by one. If I have to.” “That’s to cauterize the stubs.”

“The Ramos kidnapping. How did it work?” “Where do I find him?”

“Me too. Tell me about the guardians.” “Who is he?”

“How do I recognize him?”

“In the next hour, where do I find your partner?” “Who killed her? You?”

“Who’s the boss?”

“Now listen to me. If you tell me where to find the boss, I will let you live.”

“I’m going to talk to your wife. If you move or say one word, I’ll kill you.”

(Tony Scott, disk 2, 35:23 )

Creasy finds the kidnappers and kills them one by one. Creasy knows the

boss from the kidnapper he is killed. He grab the boss’s wife and brothers to make

negotiate. When he negotiating from the phone with the boss, Creasy is surprised

(26)

the boss when he proofs it. He is very happy and he agrees to change his life to

Pyta’s life. It can be seen from this quotation:

“Hello Daniel. I’ve got your family and I want to negotiate.” “I want you.”

“Listen to me. Listen! I’m going to take your family apart piece by piece.” “Whose life? You are a liar. Pynta’s dead.”

“I want proof of life. What did she call her bear?” “Ok. I agree to change my life with Pynta’s life.”

(Tony Scott, disk 2, 63:15)

After negotiating, Creasy and the boss meet in some place. The boss

releases Pyta, and Creasy releases the boss’s brothers. Creasy is very happy to see

Pyta runs and hugs him. He asks Pyta to go to her mother, because her mother is

waiting for him in the car. Pyta runs and Creasy enters to the boss’s car. In the

journey, Creasy’s eyes is slowly closing and Creasy has gone. He is dead with

sweet smile in his lips.

3.1.2

Pyta

Pyta is a child of Samuel and Lisa. She is nine years old. She is from

Houston, Texas. She is beautiful with white skin and short hair. She is pure,

friendly, smart, compassionate, respectful and her teacher likes her. She always

has many question in her mind. She likes bear doll, dog, music, and swimming.

She loves her bodyguard, Creasy. She wants to be his friend and she wants to

know all about Creasy. Creasy likes a father for her. She is always together with

Creasy, and she always asks Creasy if she has difficulty in her lesson. It can be

(27)

“My mom and me are from Houston, Texas.” “Do you like dog Mr. Creasy?”

“Frank doesn’t take to most people. Do you speak German?”

“We fixed the room up two weeks ago. Mom and I. It’s nicer than before.” “You’ve got a CD player if you like music. I like music a lot.”

“I like him mom.”

“He is like a great big bear. Creasy bear.” “Where are you from Creasy?”

“I know. But which state?”

“You can drive, and talk at the same time, can’t you?” “Are you going to quit? My last bodyguard quit.”

“Being black, is that a positive or negative for a bodyguard in Mexico?” “There were 24 kidnappings in Mexico city in the last six days. Four a day. What do you think about that Mr. Creasy?”

“Did you like school Creasy?” “So you were unhappy?”

“What happened to your hand?” “How do you think he got out?” “It’s better to be free, right?”

(Tony Scott, disk 1, 21:08)

“It’s not to bad. Will it take a long time before it’s better? Our big swim meet is in three weeks. Interschool. I was going to swim in the one hundred meter freestyle.”

“Creasy, what’s a concubine? It was in a book at school.”

“But the emperor of China had 1000 of them. How can that be?” “So how come you know so much about those countries?”

“What did you do in Asia? Is that where you met the man with cigarettes?” “Do you have a girlfriend, Creasy?”

“My mom drinks too. Why do people drink Creasy?” “I don’t want to play piano. I want to swim.”

“You should break all my fingers Creasy, then tape them back together. I won’t be able to play the piano, but I could still swim.”

(Tony Scott, disk 1, 32:47)

Pyta loves Creasy very much and she is always worried about Creasy. She

does not want to lose Creasy from her life. She loves Creasy likes loving her

parents, and she is never afraid Creasy, but she admires him. It can be seen from

this quotation:

(28)

“I’m going to keep people safe someday. Just like you.” “I love you Creasy. And you love me. Right?”

(Tony Scott, disk 2,43:45 )

Pyta is sad and is crying when she reconsidered that Creasy does not back

to home with her. She shouts to call Creasy’s name, but Creasy does not come.

She loses Creasy forever, because Creasy has gone.

1. THE SUMMARY OF

MAN ON FIRE

Man on Fire (2004)

A wave of kidnappings has swept through Mexico, feeding a growing sense of panic among its wealthier citizens, especially parents. In one six-day period, there were twenty-four abductions, leading many to hire bodyguards for their children. Into this world enters John Creasy, a burned-out ex-CIA operative/assassin, who has given up on life. Creasy's friend Rayburn brings him to Mexico City to be a bodyguard to nine-year-old Pita Ramos, daughter of industrialist Samuel Ramos and his wife Lisa. Creasy is not interested in being a bodyguard, especially to a youngster, but for lack of something better to do, he accepts the assignment. Creasy barely tolerates the precocious child and her pestering questions about him and his life. But slowly, she chips away at his seemingly impenetrable exterior, his defenses drop, and he opens up to her. Creasy's new-found purpose in life is shattered when Pita is kidnapped. Despite being seriously wounded during the kidnapping, he vows to kill anyone involved in or profiting from the kidnapping. And no one can stop him. Written by Sujit R. Varma

Trivia

Brother of director Ridley Scott

Uncle of Jake Scott

Partner, with Ridley Scott, in Scott Free Productions.

Once had a biography of Mexican icon Pancho Villa in production. At the same time, his brother, Ridley Scott, also had a "Pancho Villa" project in development. The story made headlines, and although both brothers are careful to note differences in the two projects, neither project has yet been produced (2001).

His films are known for their rich visual style, with dazzling cinematography and beautiful production designs.

Visual trademarks include heavy use of smoke, colored filters, and shafts of light breaking through windows, often through blinds.

(43)

Starred in brother Ridley Scott's first filmmaking effort, "Boy and Bicycle", in 1960 at the age of 16, playing the title role. The film is currently owned by the British Film Institute, and video copies are currently available for purchase.

Is an avid mountain climber.

Graduated from the Royal College Of Art In London, England.

Has directed literally thousands of television commercials, most for his brother Ridley Scott's company RSA (Ridley Scott Associates), between the early 1970s and the early 1980s.

Once linked romantically to Brigitte Nielsen, whom he directed in Beverly Hills Cop II (1987). Both were married at the time, Nielsen to Sylvester Stallone. Scott has since admitted the affair was what led to his divorce from his second wife.

Turned down a chance to direct Beautiful Girls (1996), because he felt he couldn't do justice to Scott Rosenberg's script, which placed characterization and dialogue above dramatic event.

In the early 1980s, was reported to be a contender to direct the highly regarded screenplay Starman (1984), since British commercial veterans were suddenly in vogue in Hollywood ('Alan Parker', Adrian Lyne, Hugh Hudson, Ridley Scott, etc.) However, the reaction to his debut film, The Hunger (1983), was so negative that his stock in Hollywood sank almost instantly. Starman was ultimately directed by John Carpenter, and Scott's next film was Top Gun (1986), three years later.

Son of Elizabeth Jean Scott.

Uncle of actress Jordan Scott

Dedicated his movie Spy Game (2001) to the memory of his mother, Elizabeth Scott, who died that year.

Performance (1970) by Donald Cammell and Nicolas Roeg is one of his favourite films.

Unlike brother Ridley Scott, he utilizes mostly American actors in lead roles. (Only four leads in his features have not been American since The Hunger (1983): Catherin Deneuve and David Bowie in The Hunger (1983); Nicole Kidman in Days of Thunder (1990)) and Keira Knightley in Domino (2005)).

(44)

He and his brother Ridley have both worked with the following actors: Susan Sarandon (Thelma & Louise, The Hunger), Tom Skerrit (Alien, Top Gun), Tom Cruise (Legend, Top Gun), Viggo Mortensen (G.I. Jane, Crimson Tide), Brad Pitt (Thelma & Louise, True Romance), Giancarlo Giannini (Hannibal, Man on Fire), Gary Oldman (Hannibal, True Romance), and Denzel Washington (American Gangster, Man on Fire et al).

Was classmates with Stephen Goldblatt and Richard Loncrain in Film School.

Often casts Denzel Washington.

Former brother-in-law of Sandy Watson.

Personal Quotes

About Ridley Scott: "Nobody does toga movies like my brother."

[on Tom Cruise] A magnet for women.

On Days of Thunder (1990): The problem was, we started on the movie without a script. Tom [Cruise] was already part of the line-up when I arrived and they said: "Tom can sit behind the wheel of a race car and smoke a cigarette and this movie will make a fortune." And that was the attitude we went in with. Robert Towne would be writing the scenes at night, we would shoot in the morning. It was a dangerous way to work. But we really thought, "Look - it's racing cars and it's Tom Cruise!" But you always have to get a story and you've got to get character first, and we hadn't.
