CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents some topics related to the study; including background

of the study, statement of the problems, purpose of the study, significance of the

study, scope and limitation, definition of the key terms.

1.1 Background of the Study

There is always a relationship between linguistic and translation studies. This

study is supposed to discuss the translation work while it is required as the final

project of student of English Education Department. English Education Department is

language department which consists of linguistic studies and education development.

According to Toury (in Riccardi, 2004: 111) “the relationship between disciplines

dealing with related matters have always been of interest to students of all the

disciplines involved “, clearly it informs that English, as a linguistic in discussion,

and translation studiesshould be one pieces and cannot be separated from other. Thus,

in this study, the discipline is English, the mattersis transferring the meaning between

English and Indonesian, and the translation study is one of the disciplines involved

and become the main part of all. It is found that linguistic and translation studies

have a great relation.

Learning language is not only learning its discipline, but also how to interpret

it as the goal through learning process, and the translation works with it. According to

(12)

As a matter of fact, to say that every translation is interpretation is completely trivial: interpreting is any activity aiming at bridging about comprehension, and translating has the same aim, but normally involves a different language in which comprehension is to take place. Thus ‘Every translation is an interpretation’ merely says that certain activity aiming at comprehension is an activity aiming at comprehension.

To say that the translation is interpretation is very simple idea. In fact, translation and

interpretation works together in one line, even it could not be defined that every

interpretation is translation. Based on the statement above, translation is defined as

the interpretation looking to the scope they work. Looking at the definition of both

things, translation and interpretation, they have a similar line. Interpretation aims at

transferring the comprehension while the translation aims the same thing with

involving a different language. Every interpretation is not translation, but every

translation is interpretation.

Based on the discussion above, translation discussion becomes an important

part of linguistics. Bourdie said (in Kuhiwczak and Littau, 2007:44) “translating can

be seen as a problem-solving activity in which a source element may be rendered by

one or more elements in the target language”.

When we are talking about the translation, we are talking about its procedure.

The translation procedure has a different territorial from a translation technique.

Newmark (1988:81) stated “while translation methods relate to whole texts,

translation procedures are used for sentences and the smaller units of language”.

Translation procedure worked in the smaller area or in pieces. The translation

procedure is also different from translation process. Based on Newmark’s statement,

(13)

for their scopes which are different while translation prosess talks about steps of

translation. Thereforee, translation procedure is technique, and translation prosess is

steps.Vinay and Darbelnet’s(inKeumala, 2009:3) depicted the translation procedures

as the basic technique of translation. The basic thing is the first thing of everything to

know. That what makes the researcher thinks that this study is important.

The researcher analyzes the translation procedure applied in translating the

book “The Future of the Past” From English into Indonesian by Eberhard Zangger

which was published at the first time in Germany in 1998 by Schneekluth Verlag

GmbH, Munchen. So, it was published in English in 2002 by Phoenix (Orion Books,

Ltd), London. The book was translated by Adiloka Sujono into Indonesian. It is about

archaeology in the 21st century. The study is an analysis on the translation ofthe

archaeology book, it appears as language and archaeology.Amberg and Vause stated:

“Language is foremost a means of communication and communication almost always

takes place within some sort of social context (2009:2)”. Language comes with

history, history is presented by archaeology, and archaeology consists of

social.Blench (2004:1) stated:

Languages were spoken byreal people in the past and indeed form striking patterns in the present. This must havebeen the consequence of distinct strategies of movement and diversification of peoplesand some how reflect their changing social and economic conditions.

As stated before that language is main communication tool. Language always has a

history. From the beginning of civilization, language was spoken by the people in the

past. And spoken language in certain place by certain time constructs social life of

(14)

infrastructure of the people in the past. And that’s what should be the concern of

archaeology in the future. Language and archaeology always come together.

This study is conducted as the researcher thought that the translation study is

one of very important study areas to investigate. Besides, the translation study has

been given less attention by the students of English Depertmant at University of

Muhammadiyah Malang. The studies of translation are applied rarely. Therefore, by

conducting this study, it is hoped that the translation study can be improved more

intensively than before. Accordingly, students of English Department can be

motivated to conduct another research about translation study.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In accordance with the background of study, this research is purposed to

answer the following question as follows:

1. How are the nouns in the book “The Future of the Past” translated from English

into Indonesian?

2. What are the translation procedures applied in translating the book “The Future

of the Past” from English into Indonesian?

1.3 Purpose of the Study

According to the statement of problem, the purpose of this study is:

1. To describe how the nouns in the book “The Future of the Past” are translated

(15)

2. To discover the translation procedures applied in translating the book “The

Future of the Past” from English into Indonesian.

1.4 Scope and limitation

The researcher gave the scope of the study on analyzing the last chapter of the

book “The Future of The Past(Archeology in the 21st Century)” written by Eberhard

Zangger, the expert in the reconstruction of archeological landscape and who has

written and co-authored about seventy scientific articles up to year 2001 AD.The last

chapter of the book is chapter four which generates two titles; (1). New Methods of

Archeological research, (2). What Does The Future Hold for Archeology?. The

researcher took these two titles as the content of these two titles presented the general

terms. So, the researcher thought that these two titles represented all the things in the

book.

The researcher limits the study only on the part of speech and specifies on the

noun as the most part of speech appeared on the text. The aspect of study is only the

procedure applied by Adiloka Sujono in translating the mentioned book, as the

translator who has translated more than ninety books which are published by Printing

Corporation in Indonesia.

1.5 Significance of the study

This study will contribute as linguistic reference to several cases as follows:

1. There are three specific studies that canbe taken in the English department of

UMM, they are Business English (BE), English for Young Learner (EYL), and

(16)

sociolinguistic or English for Young Learner related with teaching method, but it

is rarely to find the previous studyof translation work. For English Department,

this study of translation procedure applied by the researcher can be one student

project that will be the previous study for the next time.

2. For students of English department in UMM who are interested in taking

translation study of their project in the future, this study can be one reference to

do their project. And the researcher hopes this study can help them.

3. Seeing to the side of this study, it is translation procedure, the result of this study

supposed to be linguistic study. For the general educational perspective, it is

expected to be a reference in terms of global scope of language study.

1.6 Definition of key term a. Linguistic

A scientific study of human language (Wikipedia)

b. Translation

Translation is the general term referring to the transfer of thought and ideas from one

language(source) to another (target).Brisil (in choliluddin 2005:18)

c. Translation Procedure

The basic technique of translation, Newmark (1988:81) stated “while translation

methods relate to whole texts, translation procedures are used for sentences and the

smaller units of language”
