1 communication, it is needed to connect people in a community. People cannot live without any help from others because they live interdependently. They need to interact and communicate with other people by using a language that is a system of verbal symbols by which members of speech community interact and express their ideas, feeling and thoughts (Wardaugh in Fardini; 2001).

Language, as a means of communication has a function to transmit meaningful ideas, message of information within a person by means of establishing and maintaining relationship with their society. Society is the place where the communication takes.

Besides, it is also a part of certain culture, which has special characteristics in the structure and value system in the society. That is why it is important to study language and things related with it.

Fardini (2001:7) states that sociolinguistic is the study of the ways people use language in social interaction. It investigates the relationship between language and society with the goal of better language function that discussed any phenomenon related with the use of language in society.

The society consists of certain groups that are classified based on the variation. They including dialect, argot, jargon, slang, colloquial, register, etc. in this study, the writer intended to discuss one of those language variations that are register. Then register is exists as the result of their development.

Wardhaugh (2002:51) defines register as a set of vocabularies use by profession or social group. It will make certain individual have similar linguistically behavior with the other so that they can speak the same code and respect to be members of the same speech community.

There are some previous studies related with the phenomenon of registers. In 2005, Sari had conducted the study about register used by employees of the shoe company of Artisan Jaya Internusa Makmur Malang. The result of her research showed that there are two kinds of English registers: formal register and informal register. There were 142 formal registers and 4 informal registers. Her study found that there were two reasons why the employees of the Shoe Company of Artisan Jaya Internusa Makmur Malang used registers. First, the English registers made the communication run easier and simpler. Second, the employees were accustomed to using English registers as their medium of communication in the shoe company. Then, Yulia in 2009 studied about register used by immigration officer of immigration office in Malang. The result of her study showed that there were two kinds of register: Formal register and informal register. It was found out that the total of registers were 22. From the total numbers of registers, 9 register can be grouped as formal register and the 13 registers grouped as informal register. In her study, Yulia found that there are two reasons that make the immigration officer of immigration office in Malang use register. First, it has simple terms in immigration. Second, it can make the communication easier.

Based on the explanation and example above, the writer is interested to investigate the register used by staff agents of Prudential Insurance at Jalan Soekarno-Hatta Malang, because they are one of profession group that used register to shorten their interlocution and give information more easily with others. The writer wants to analyze and describe about what are the registers used by staff agents of Prudential Insurance at Jalan Soekarno-Hatta Malang, the meaning of register is used, and the functions they use a register.

Prudential Insurance is worth to be analyzed. Thus, this research will give contribution to sociolinguistics science.

1.2. Statement of Problems

Based on the background above, the problem of the study can be written as follows:

sociolinguistics. For the students and teachers, the findings can be used to provide the information related with the existence of register in certain society, especially at staff agents of Prudential Insurance at Jalan Soekarno-Hatta Malang. For the ESP students, it can enrich their knowledge about the language in occupation and profession. For the new staff agent of Prudential Insurance, it can avoid misunderstanding about the register are used in their duty, it can also enrich their knowledge about the language in their duty. By knowing the real application of registers, the students of English Department of University of Muhammadiyah Malang become aware to the language variety used by the staff agents of Prudential Insurance at Jalan Soekarno-Hatta Malang and this study could be used as a reference to conduct further study.

1.5. Scope and Limitation

This study is intended to investigate the registers that are presented in a form of words by the staff agents of Prudential Insurance at Jalan Soekarno-Hatta Malang. Because of the limited time, this study focuses on registers used by the staff agents of Prudential Insurance to find out the meaning of registers and to know the types of registers used by staff agents of Prudential Insurance at Jalan Soekarno-Hatta Malang.

1.6. Definition of Key Terms

To avoid misunderstanding and misinterpretation, the following terms need to be defined:

b. Register is a variety of language used for a particular purpose or in a particular social setting, register is also the language used by a certain profession and certain situation. According to Wardhaugh (2006), Registers are sets of language items associated with discrete occupational or social groups. Surgeons, airline pilots, bank managers, policeman, sales clerks, jazz fans, and pimps employ different registers.

c. Staff agent (An Insurance agent) is a state-licensed professional who represents an insurance company in selling and servicing policies.

d. Prudential is one of Life Insurance Services Company.
