especially the coach of INKADO in University of Muhammadiyah Malang who gave

the permission and helped the researcher to conduct this research.

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION

1.1Background of Study

Language is what the members of a particular society speak. When to or

more people communicate with each other in speech, we can call the system of

communication that they employ a code. In most cases that code will be

something we may also want to call a language (Wardhaugh, 2006). It can show

that language is not only as a tool in the society that can help people to interact

each other but also can help us to communicate, share ideas and transfer

knowledge or get some information.

Sociolinguistics is concerned with investigating the relationship between

language and society with the goal of a better understanding of the structure of

language and how language functions in communication (Wardhaugh, 2006).

Sociolinguistics is the field that studies the relation between language and society,

between the uses of language and the social structures in which the users of

language live (Spolsky, 2003). It means that when we study about

sociolinguistics, we study the relationship between language and society. Society

develops the language.

The development of language is influenced by the society itself; they

create new varieties of language. They have purpose to make the language more

jargon is special technical vocabulary associated with a specific area of work or

interest. Certain group of people uses jargon. It is related to a sector and used by

the profession group. Among profession and social group there are lots of jargons

used by language community, such as in computer, internet etc. When jargon is

used in public area or society, which has many kinds of community, it will cause

misunderstanding except certain terms that have been known by the public.

Based on the background above, the researcher is interested in analyzing

jargon used by INKADO. INKADO is one of an association of karate in

Indonesia. Karate-Do is a martial art that places weight upon spiritual rather than

physical matters (Shotokan Karate-Do International Federation, 2012). In

University of Muhammadiyah Malang, Karate-Do is a student’s extracurricular

activity. The member of INKADO consists of coach and participant. The coach is

a member of INKADO in University of Muhammadiyah Malang who has

qualification as a member who at least has achieved DAN 1(black belt).

Basically, the jargon that is used by INKADO is taken from Japanese

language. By having understanding about jargon of INKADO, it will give

contribution to enrich the utterance in sociolinguistics. It is because the students

will know there are so many varieties of language especially jargon in society. It

1. What are jargons used by the coach of INKADO at University of

Muhammadiyah Malang?

2. What are the meanings of jargon used by the coach of INKADO at University

of Muhammadiyah Malang?

3. When does the coach of INKADO use jargon?

1.3Purpose of Study

After stating the certain problems, the researcher will decide the purpose of study.

They are formulated as follows:

1. To know the jargon used by the coach of INKADO at University of

Muhammadiyah Malang.

2. To know the meaning of jargon used by the coach of INKADO at University

of Muhammadiyah Malang.

3. To know when the coach of INKADO at University of Muhammadiyah

Malang use the jargon.

1.4Significance of Study

This research is intended to give scientific information about jargon used

by the members of INKADO. The researcher expects this research will contribute

to enrich the utterance in sociolinguistics. It can be useful for students of English

about language used in society especially jargon used by INKADO at University

of Muhammadiyah Malang.

1.5Scope and Limitation

In this study the researcher wants to limit her research on certain aspects

to avoid bias discussion of analysis. The researcher takes the scope of this study

only focusing on the jargon used by the members of INKADO. The researcher

limits this study on the jargon used by the coach, the meaning of the jargon and

when the coach of INKADO used jargon.

1.6Definition of Key Terms

1. Jargon is special technical vocabulary associated with a specific area of work

or interest (Yule 2010).

2. INKADO is one of karate association in Indonesia. Karate-Do is a martial art

that places weight upon spiritual rather than physical matters (Shotoka
