FROM THE PASTOR
“To the thirsty I will give water as a gi from the spring of the water of life.” (Rev. 21:6)
Last week we learned that the Book of Revelaon was wrien to give hope to Chrisans who were facing persecuon by assuring them of the future victory of God. It is this future victory that gives meaning and understanding to our present reality. People might be surprised that a lot of the imagery in Revelaon is not about predicng future calamies, but rather describing the present situaon of Chrisans who were dying in defense of their faith. This makes Revelaon difficult for us to interpret today because many of these scary images have already come and gone. So instead of reading fearfully with ancipaon of the future, we should read them as confirmed in the past, giving us hope for the future, and assisng us in the present to live our Chrisan lives courageously. With a lile bit of work, we can train ourselves to see these signs. In fact, doing so, might inspire us to thirst even more for truth and jusce and fraternity. God sees this thirsng and searching as a good start and he promises to give us the springs of water. The water he promises is given freely, not only to those who hope to please God through their own efforts, but also to all those who feel the burden of their weakness and entrust themselves to his love, believing that they will one day arrive at the fullness of life and happiness. This week, let us ask ourselves then, what do we thirst for? Moreover, to which springs do we go to quench our thirst?
God’s Covenant with Noah
FOCUS: We can always trust in God’s promises

This month we’re learning about God’s covenants. A
covenant is like an agreement or a contract but much stronger. Contracts usually involve property. Covenants are about people. A covenant makes family. And whereas if one is unfaithful to a contract the only risk is the loss of property, with a covenant, one’s own life is at stake. We can read the en3re narra3ve of the Bible in terms of God crea3ng covenants with humankind in order to make it family, to share his own divine life. Yet 3me and 3me again, humankind has proved itself incapable of being faithful to its covenantal promises.
This week families are going to learn about one of the early covenants: God’s covenant with Noah. The sign of the rainbow is actually pre5y profound. If you think of a bow and arrow, the rainbow is directed toward God. It signifies God saying, “I will always be faithful. Even if you are not. I will take upon myself all the responsibility.” It is a decidedly unsymmetrical covenant. God puts his own life on the line. We don’t really come to appreciate this un3l we witness the crucifixion of Jesus. As we begin the season of Lent, it is good to start with a rainbow.
THIRST
VERSE: “To the thirsty I will give water as a gi9 from the spring of the water of life.” (Rev. 21:6)
FOCUS: What do I thirst for? To what do I turn to quench my thirst?
ACT: Pray the Rosary.
PRAYER: O my God, I rely on your infinite mercy and promises.
“We shall not cease from explora3on, and the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started
and know the place for the first 3me.”
