Hutan mengabsorpsi CO2 selama proses fotosintesis dan menyimpannya
sebagai materi organik dalam biomassa tanaman, begitu pula dengan tanaman kelapa sawit. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk : (1) mendapatkan model alometrik pendugaan potensi cadangan karbon pada vegetasi perkebunan kelapa sawit di Sumatera Utara; (2) mendapatkan potensi cadangan karbon pada konversi hutan menjadi perkebunan kelapa sawit di Sumatera Utara. Penelitian lapangan dilakukan di areal Perkebunan Kelapa Sawit Putri Hijau, Besitang Sumatera Utara. Pelaksanaan penelitian dilakukan dengan dua tahap kegiatan, yaitu tahap pertama pengambilan data di lapangan dan tahap kedua menganalisa biomassa dan karbon bagian-bagian tanaman dilakukan di laboratorium. Peubah yang diukur di lapangan adalah berat basah, sedangkan di laboratorium yang diukur adalah kadar air, kadar zat terbang, kadar abu dan kadar karbon. Karbon tanaman dalam petak ukur ditentukan menggunakan model allometrik karbon batang kelapa sawit. Model hubungan antara biomassa atau karbon tanaman dengan dimensi batang dibuat dengan metode hubungan alometrik yang menggambarkan biomassa atau massa karbon per batang sebagai fungsi dari diameter dan tinggi bebas pelepah. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa model persamaan allometrik terbaik untuk menduga biomassa dan massa karbon tanaman kelapa sawit adalah W = 0.00597D1.000Hbp

, sehingga menghasilkan biomassa dan massa karbon tanaman kelapa sawit umur 15 tahun masing-masing sebesar 315,19 ton/ha dan 71,58 ton/ha.

Forests absorb CO2 during photosynthesis and store it as organic matter in
biomass plants, as well as oil palm plantations. This study aimed were to : (1) obtain a model Allometric estimation of carbon stocks in vegetation potential of oil palm plantations in North Sumatra; (2) to obtain the potential carbon stocks in forest conversion to oil palm plantations in North Sumatra. This research was conducted in the area of Oil Palm Putri Hijau, Besitang North Sumatra. The research was carried out in two stages, namely the first stage were to data in the field and the second stage was analyze of carbon biomass and plant in the laboratory. Parameters measured in the field was wet weight, whereas in the laboratory is measured moisture content, volatile matter content, ash content and carbon content. Carbon plants in the plot were determined using allometric models palm carbon rods. Models the relationship between plant biomass or carbon rods with dimensions created with a method that describes the relationship Allometric biomass or carbon mass per plant as a function of the diameter and height of the stem free. The results showed that the best model of allometric equations for estimating biomass and carbon mass of oil palm plantations is
