so that I could finish this undergraduate thesis as a partial fulfillment of the

requirement for Sarjana Sastra degree at English Department, Faculty of Letters,

Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto. Besides, this research also involves some

people’s help and support that mean so much to me, especially for finishing this

undergraduate thesis. Thus, I also would like to express my gratitude to:

 Dean of Faculty of Letters and my advisor as well, Ambar Pujiyatno S.S.,

M.Hum, who gives me his best advices, supports, helps, care and patience in

guiding me to finish my undergraduate thesis.

 Head of English Department, Fitri Rakhmawati S.S.M.Hum, who also supports

ABSTRACT

This research analyses the members of the English speech community at Faculty of Letters Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto. The members include all of the lecturers and the students of the Faculty of Letters. However, the lecturers are merely the tutors or the supervisors of the English speech community. Meanwhile, the students are the ones who learn English through the English speech community. The purposes of this research are to describe the Language Attitude of the English speech community members at Faculty of Letters Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto towards English language as well as to elaborate the factors that influence the Language Attitude.

The method of this research is mixed methodology which covers the qualitative and quantitative method as well. Here, it uses the method of quantitative data in collecting and analyzing the data of the research. Later, the results of the data will be described based on the qualitative method. The instruments of collecting data are through the questionnaire, the interview and the observation. The respondents cover all students of the Faculty of Letters from the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 7th semester students. Also, some interviews are given to a group of students randomly. For the observation, it is done by the researcher around the area of Faculty of Letters in terms of completing the data in determining the language attitude of the English speech community members.

In the end, the results show that the members of English speech community show a positive attitude towards the English language. Also, this occurs for the three aspects of the language attitude. The results show 100% positive for each of the aspect that covers Affective, Behavioral and Cognitive aspect. Some factors that influence the language attitude also described in this research. It reveals the factors dealing with personal experience, emotional feelings or ego and the environment of the surroundings.

INTISARI

Penelitian ini menganalisa anggota komunitas Bahasa Inggris di Fakultas Sastra Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto. Anggota tersebut melibatkan para dosen dan mahasiswa Fakultas Sastra. Namun, para dosen hanya akan berperan sebagai pembimbing atau pengawas komunitas Bahasa Inggris. Sedangkan, para mahasiswa adalah mereka yang mempelajari Bahasa Inggris melalui komunitas Bahasa Inggris. Tujuan dari penelitian ini yakni untuk mendeskripsi kan Sikap Bahasa para anggota komunitas Bahasa Inggris di Fakultas Sastra Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto dan juga untuk memaparkan tentang faktor yang mempengaruhi Sikap Bahasa tersebut.

Metode dari penelitian ini adalah metode campuran yang meliputi metode kualitatif dan juga kuantitatif. Disni, metode kuantitatif digunakan dalam mengumpulkan dan menganalisa data penelitian. Kemudian, hasil dari data akan dideskripsikan berdasarkan metode kualitatif. Instrumen pengumpulan data adalah melalui kuisioner, interview dan observasi. Para responden mencakup seluruh mahasiswa Fakultas Sastra mulai dari mahasiswa semester 1,3,5 dan 7. Beberapa interview juga diberikan kepada sebuah kelompok mahasiswa secara acak. Untuk observasi, hal ini dilakukan oleh penulis di sekitar area Fakultas Sastra dalam rangka melengkapi data dalam menentukan sikap bahasa anggota komunitas Bahasa Inggris.

Pada akhirnya, hasil menunjukan bahwa para anggota komunitas Bahasa Inggris menunjukan sikap positif terhadap bahasa Inggris. Ha sil ini juga muncul pada setiap aspek sikap bahasa. Hasil menunjukan bahwa 100% positif untuk setiap aspek yang meliputi aspek Affective, Behavioral dan Cognitive. Beberapa faktor yang mempengaruhi sikap bahasa juga akan dijelaskan dalam penelitian ini. Fa ktor tersebut berhubungan dengan pengalaman pribadi, faktor perasaan atau ego dan lingkungan sekitar.

Kata kunci: Sikap bahasa, Anggota Komunitas Bahasa Inggris, Aspek Affective, Aspek Behavioral, Aspek Cognitive.
