This research focuses on the compliments and responses used by the main characters of The Ugly Truth movie. This research was conducted to find out the types of compliment applied by the main characters of The Ugly Truth Movie, and also to describe the responses expressed by the addressees of the movie.
This research is a descriptive qualitative study and uses pragmatic approach. The data of this study come from conversations containing compliments, verbal and non verbal acts of responses. The verbal acts are taken from the conversations which are expressed by the main characters of The Ugly Truth Movie. While the non verbal acts are the body language, facial expression, and smile expressed by the main characters in that movie

Kajian penilitian ini fokus pada pujian dan respon pujian yang digunakan ole para pemain utama film The Ugly Truth. Kajian ini dilakukan untuk menemukan tipe pujian yang digunakan oleh para pemain utama film The Ugly Truth, dan juga mendeskripsikan respon respon pujian yang digunakan oleh para pemain utama dalam film tersebut.
Kajian ini merupakan kajian penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dan menggunakan pendekatan pragmatik. Data kajian ini berasal dari percakapan yang mengandung pujian dan respon pujian baik verbal maupun non verbal. Data verbal diambil dari percakapan yang digunakan oleh para pemain utama film The Ugly Truth. Sedangkan data non-verbal yaitu bahasa tubuh, ekspresi wajah, dan senyuman yang digunakan ole para pemain utama dalam film tersebut.

INTRODUCTION
1. Introduction
1.1 Background of study
In the daily life we want a good and harmony life. The realization of the harmony relationship can be influenced by a person’s way to communicate with other
people, one of the things commonly done to maintain the harmony is a praise. Praise is a good word that we say that the people we talk to were delighted. Giving praise to people we are talking to can cause a pleasant feeling, so it can cause a sense of friendship and foster solidarity between people. Praise is also needed to provide support or provide feedback to the listener so that they do not feel stressed. Praise as expected by the other person can lead to good feelings as in the example of "your veil is nice" pure spoken word does the speaker want to commend the speaker on the speaker admiration towards the listener, but the word is also interpreted as strings attached to establish friendships with the adressees.
The compliment which has been given by the one to another one and dealing with responses is called compliment responses. Compliments and its response has main function to keep solidarity and harmony between the addresser and addressee. Wolfson maintains that the major function of a compliment is “to create or maintain solidarity between interlocutors” by expressing admiration or approval (1983:89).
Because with accepting the compliment (based on west culture), people have made politeness for other people. Viewed from pragmatics, in compliment response a receiver has two options: accepting or rejecting compliment. It means to avoid arrogant. In this condition, receiver with accepting compliment has a conflict. When accepting the compliment, they supposed to be arrogant. Whereas rejecting a compliment is impolite because it doesn’t respect with addresser. Ones can maintain this conflict and give response by saying “thanks” because addressee doesn’t make
ambiguity with a compliment response and also can be avoided from arrogant.
Movie is a kind of source of data since it is a representation of reality. As Allen and Gomery (1993) said that the story of the movie is a social phenomenon that reflects the real life. The movie is considered as a life-image that is acted by the characters on the screen. Mostly, the story of the movies is often taken from reality including the conversation. This research will investigate a movie since the movie has the richness of data containing compliments and responses. From this phenomena, the researcher chooses The Ugly Truthmovie as the subject of this research.
about a romantically challenged morning show producer is reluctantly embroiled in a series of outrageous tests by her chauvinistic correspondent to prove his theories on relationships and help her find love. His clever ploys, however, lead to an unexpected result. The researcher finds some expressions of compliment and responses used by the main characters. The compliments and responses are applied in various ways, therefore, the researcher is interested to conduct a research on that movie.
A research on compliments and compliments responses have been conducted by Rose (2001) focusing on film studies. The research entitled "Compliment and Compliment Responses in the film: Implication for Research Pragmatics and Language Teaching "focus on how the movie represents human communication. This research takes data from the praise and compliments responses coming from 40 American films. The results showed that the language in the film represent speeches in real life. This study was focused on socio- pragmatics theory. Rose establishes the validity of film language in the teaching of pragmatics in language classes. His findings are however remarkably different from those arrived at for naturally occurring compliments.

Bruti (2006) also did a research about the compliment realization and responses. Her research focused on the strategic function of implicit compliments, aiming to evaluate their contribution to positive and negative politeness and their translation in Interlingua subtitles (from English into Italian).
Another research is conducted by Indonesian researcher. Sari (2009) did a research about Indonesians learning English to respond to English compliments based on the compliment topics (appearance and ability) and social statuses of the addressor (higher, equal, and lower). She used discourse completion Test to collect the data. The results of her study show that Indonesians learning English employed various types of compliment responses in responding to the compliments given. Specifically, ten types of compliment responses (appreciation token, comment acceptance, praise upgrade, comment history, reassignment, return, scale down, question, disagreement, and qualification) are categorized on the basis of the taxonomy of compliment responses formulated by Herbert.
From various studies above, it can be concluded that the study of complement and complement responses have varied data sources and purposes. The research methods used are also diverse. Some studies used qualitative and some studies used quantitative. The methods of data collection is also varied, some used natural speech, one used DCT, and some other used movies.
1.2 Research Problems
This study is conducted to answer the problems formulated in the following questions:
1. What types of the compliments are used by the main characters of The Ugly Truth movie?
2. What types of responses are used by the main characters of The Ugly Truth movie ?
1.3 Research Objective
Based on the problem above, the objectives of the study are aimed:
1. To find out the types of complements used by the main characters of The Ugly Truth movie.
2. To find out the types of responses used by the main characters of The Ugly Truthmovie.
1.4 Significance of the Study
This research is expected to be useful for me in understanding about compliments and responses. This research can help to know about the classification or types of compliments and responses used by the main characters of The Ugly Truth movie.
giving additional information about pragmatics, specifically to give more information how actually ways of giving and responding compliments.
1.5 Scope and Limitation
This research is limited on the types of compliments and responses which is uttered by the main characters. The researcher uses The Ugly Truth as the movie published in 2009.
1.6 Definition of Key Terms
There are some key terms in this research:
1. Compliment: A compliment is a speech act which explicitly or implicitly attributes credit to someone other than the speaker, usually the person addressed, for some good (possession, characteristics, skills, etc.).
2. Compliment Responses: Compliment response is a verbal acknowledgement that the recipients of the compliment hear and is reacted to the compliment. (tripod.com).

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
2. Reviews of Related Literature
This chapter discusses about the underlying theories of the study. Some theories relate to the study.
2.1 Speech Acts
Speech act is a part of pragmatics study. It focuses on how to do something by saying utterances. It means that the speaker uses a language to get the hearer to do something and the speaker expects that the hearer will understand his/her communicative intention.
According to Searle (1976: 16), speaking a language is performing speech acts, acts such as making statements, giving commands, asking questions, and making promises. While, Yule (1996: 47) defines speech acts as action performed via utterances such as apology, complaint, invitation, promise or request.
Austin (1962) divides three kinds of acts that are performed in which in saying something someone is doing something.
a. Locutionary act is the literal meaning of the utterance. It is the basic act of utterance.
b. Illocutionary act is the act of getting the audience to recognize the
c. Perlocutionary act is the bringing about of effect on the audience by means of uttering the sentence, such effect being special to the circumstances of utterance. In simple way, locutionary act is the act of saying something, illocutionary act is what is done in the act of saying something, and perlocutionary act is the effect produced by saying something. The example below will give clear understanding of it.
A: You look beautiful tonight. B: Thank you.
The act of saying “You look beautiful tonight‟ is the locutionary act. A
complimenting B is the illocutionary act. The acceptance of the compliment by B is the perlocutionary act.
Searle in Leech (1983) provides classification of speech acts in which he calls as five macro-classes of illucotionary acts. They are:
1. Declarations are illocution whose “successful performance brings about the correspondence between the propositional content and reality”; e.g. resigning, christening, naming, appointing, etc. It consists of acts which affect immediate changes in the institutional state of affairs. For example: Priest: I baptize you….
2. Assertives commit someone to the truth of the expressed proposition: e.g. stating, suggesting, boasting, complaining, claiming, and reporting. The point is expressing a belief, making words fit the words, and committing the speaker to the truth of what is asserted.
For example: a. The earth is flat. b. Today is cool.
c. Sophie is a beautiful girl.
3. Expressives are statements of psychological condition. It means that the speaker expresses his feeling; it can be statements of pleasure, pain, like and dislike. The examples of the speech act included in expressives are compliment, congratulating, thinking, apologizing, refusing, and others. For example: a. I really like your haircut.
b. Thank you for your help.
c. I am sorry I can‟t go with you.
4. Directives are all attempts done by the speaker to get the hearer to do something. Directives cover command, order, request, suggestion, and others.
For example: a. Open the door, please!
b. Could you take me a drink, please?
5. Commisives are all expressing an intention as a commitment for the speaker to engage in future course of action. The examples of speech act included in commisives are promise, threat, and pledge.
For example: a. I will be back.
b. I will finish my homework tomorrow. c. I promise him I would come.
2.2 Compliments
Compliment as speech act, is classified as expressive expression of approval. It deals with taking account of the feeling of other people and making them comfortable. Compliment is typically a positive comment given to someone else. This positive comment can address different values such as possession, appearance, abilities, and skill as well as a combination of these.
Compliments are used to negoitate a solidarity between speaker and hearer in order to make people feel good ( Herbert, 1986 ). "A compliment is a speech act which explicitly or implicitly attributes credit to someone other than the speaker, usually the person addressed, for some good (possession, characteristics, skills, etc.) which is positively valued by the speaker and the hearer" (Holmes 1988). The compliment event is a two-unit turn adjacency pair operation (Schegloff and Sacks 1973) in which the first pair part and the second pair part are linked by both temporal and relevancy conditions. This example bellow:
A: That's a beautiful bag.
B: Thanks, my sister bouhgt it for me.
B is relevant to and dependent upon A. A compliment and its response are related to each other so that the first part predicts the second to the extent that the absence of the second part is clearly noticeable. However, the two have been treated independently in the literature. Wolfson and Manes (1980) have examined the structure and content of the first on American compliments, while Herbert (1986) and Pomerantz (1978) have treated compliment responses.
According to Wolfson (1983), the adjectives which are most frequently used in compliments are beautiful, pretty, and great. Compliment also regurlarly uses some verbs to bring positive evaluation, such as like and love. Sometimes, compliment is used by noun since it has positively valued (e.g. genius and angel) or adverb well (Wolfson & Judd. 1983).
Wolfson divided the types of cmpliment into two major categories, namely appearance and ability (Walfson & Judd, 1983).
a. Compliment of appearance: the type of compliment that refers to outer look of performance of the compliment addressee. This kind is divided into two types:
1. Personal Appearance
The type of compliment on personal appearance usually deals with something that the one uses.
There is also expression on other aspects of personal appearance which is not related to something that the one uses.
Example: Your eyes always look beautiful. 2. Possession
The type of compliment on possession usually deals with material possession.
Example: Your mother is so kind.
b. Compliment of ability: it is also one of the types of compliment which is quite different from compliment of appearance. It is not discussing about the physical look but someone’s capibility in certain occasion. There are
two types, general ability and specific act ability. 1. General Ability
The general ability includes categorical reference to skill, talent, personal quality, and taste.
Example: Your voice is awesome like a mocking jay bird. 2. Specific-act Ability
Specific-act ability contains all compliments which are specific0act in a certain situation and condition.
Example: She is doing a good job. This is really spectacular.
compliment maintaining some activities or piece of works of others who are in the lower status. It frequently includes function as encouragement.
Wolfson (1983) defined several functions of compliment. They are: a. Compliments served to increase and consolidate solidarity.
The main function of compliment is to increase solidarity between the speaker and the addressee. It is generally treated as positively affective speech acts directed to addressee. Compliment is procided as powerful device for mutual support and solidarity. It is used to achieve and reinforce good social relationship.
b. Compliments have function to create or maintain rapport.
It means that to create or to maintain the relationship between the speaker and the addressee.
c. Compliments as spontaneous expression of admiration.
Spontaneity is usually related to originality of expression. The speaker unintentionally shows his0her expression of admiration or approval to the addressee.
d. The way to express positive evaluation is usually related to adjectives nice and good.
e. Compliments as encouragement.
f. Compliments often serve to strengthen other speech act formulas.
Compliment may often serve to replace or strengthen other speech act formulas like thangking, apoligizing and greetings, for example, thanks for beautiful cake, we really like it.
g. Compliments may also be used to soften criticism.
It is particularly happen when the participants are in the relationship still want to continue and to maintain a social harmony each other. Thereefore, cmpliment usually combined by but. It is used to minimize the irritiating effect of the speaker’ criticism. For instance: The ending of the story of movie
is good but it is actually quite moving.
h. Compliments may be used to modify the sarcasm.
A comment structured in the form of compliment may quite easly turn into a reprimand or even an insult. For example You play a good game of football for a woman.
Compliments operate within the scheme of conversational postulates such as make the hearer feel good (Lackoff 1975, Goody 1918).
2.3 Compliments Responses
means a very common phrase or sentence that people say after another person has praised them for ability, possession, appearance, or anything which is valuable for social or economic reason. For instance, when someone says to his friend, “you look so beautiful”, and his friend may say “thank you.”
Related to response the compliments, Herbert (1990) classified its responses into 12 different types of compliment responses. Here are:
1. Appreciation token— A verbal or nonverbal acceptance of the compliment (e. g , thanks, thank you, [nod]).
2. Comment acceptance—single—Addressee accepts the complimentary force and give a comment on the appreciated topic (e. g, Yeah, it's my favorite, too). 3. Praise upgrade—Addressee accepts the compliment from speaker and affirms
that the compliment force is enough (e.g., really brings out the blue in my eyes, doesn't it?)
4. Comment history—Addressee give a comment on the object complimented, it shifts the force from the addressee (e.g., I bought it for the trip to Arizona). 5. Reassignment—Addressee accepts with the compliment assertion, but shifts
the force to some third person or object (e.g., my brother gave it to me; It really knitted itself).
7. Scale down—addressee disagrees with the complimentary force, pointing to some flaw in the object or claiming that the praise is overstated (e.g., It's really quite old).
8. Question—addressee questions the sincerity or the appropriateness of the compliment (e.g., Do you really think so?)
9. Disagreement—addressee asserts that the object compliment is not worthy of praise; the first speaker's assertion is in error (e.g., I hate it).
10.Qualification—weaker than (9). Addressee merely qualifies the original assertion, usually with though, but, well, etc. (e.g., It's all right, but Len's is nicer).
11.No acknowledgement—addressee gives no indication of having heard the compliment. He either responds with an irrelevant comment (topic shift or gives no response – Silence).
CHAPTER III
METHODOLOGY
3. Research Methodology
This chapter present research design, subject of the research, data and data source, research instrument, data collection and data analysis.
3.1 Research Design
This research design is descriptive qualitative. It is descriptive study since this research investigates the words or conversations of the main characters in The Ugly Truth movie in compliments and responses.
In this research, the researcher applies a descriptive qualitative method that is used to solve the problem by collecting data, classifying data, analyzing the data, and making the conclusion. The data of this research are all conversations used by the main characters in The Ugly Truth movie which contain compliments and responses in the form of words or utterances on the dialogue of the movie.
3.2 Subject of the Research
3.3 Data and Data Source
In conducting this research, the researcher takes The Ugly Truth movie and the script of this movie as the source of data. In addition, the data of this research are taken from conversations containing of compliments and responses. The movie of The Ugly Truth will be choosen since there are types of compliments and responses produced by the main characters.
3.4 Research Instrument
The main instrument of this research is that researcher becomes the key instrument in obtaining the result of the research. Thus, in order to investigate compliments and responses used in this movie, the researcher is the one who collects, and invistigates, the data that are already provided in this movie.
3.5Data Collection
In the following is the technique of how the data are collected:
1. Replaying the movie The Ugly Truth as the source of data for many times. 2. Searching and copying the transcript of the movie The Ugly Truth from the
internet.
3. Comparing the transcript of the movie to the diaologues of the main characters in the movie.
4. Taking notes on all of the utterances which contains compliments and responses as the data of the reasearch.
6. Classifying the data based on the types of compliment and types of responses by the main characters in the movie.
3.6 Data Analysis
After collecting the data, the researcher will be analyze in several steps. 1. Describing the context of situation based on the movie.
2. Identify the utterances of compliments that are used by the main characters of The Ugly Truth movie, especially the types of compliment based on Wolfson’s classification.
CHAPTER IV
FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION
This chapter consist of the finding and discussion. The fisr is the presentation of the data in finding and the analysis of the data based on the theoritical framework as stated in the previous chapter, the types of compliment by Wolfson, and then the compliment response purposed by Herbert’s theory. The findings are
discussed depending on the appearance of the data in the utterances used by the main character in “The Ugly Truth” movie. The second is discussion based on the
analysis of data finding.
4.1 Findings
In this research, the researcher found 17 data which are related to the research questions of the study. The types of compliment are analyzed using Wolfson’s theory, whereas the responses of compliment are analyzed by Herbert’s theory of compliment responses which consist of twelve types of
compliment responses.
4.1.1 Types of Compliment
In thus part, the writer identifies the types of compliment which are used by the main characters in the move entitled The Ugly Truth depending on their classification as follow:
4.1.1.1. Compliment of Appearance
The compliment of appearance is divided into two types:
a. Personal Appearance
The compliment of personal appearance deals with apparel and other aspects of personal appearance, such as, physical appearance. From all the data, the compliment of personal appearance is found in the compliment in which the speakers positively value the appearance. The physical appearance of addressees usually deals with their apparel and personal character. The data classifications are as follow:

Mike : I thought that you were the one that was gonna get fired... If you dont keep me happy.
Yes. I’ve got a list of demands that I would like to make after the show, and let me just warn you, they’re gonna be xcatological.
Just because you look pretty today....
I won’t mention the misguided phallic rage you just displayed. Abby : When you hear my voice, just do what I say.
The conversation happens in the make up room of the office. The participants are Abby and Mike. Abby is a producer of a morning news show “Sacramento AM”. By the fate, she has to work together witk Mike, a rude
host of show “The Ugly Truth”. Mike has been hired by the management of
Abby’s office to do his show in “Sacramento AM” since it has a problem with
low rating. Mike hates Abby as he finds her as a control freak producer, while Abby sees Mike as immoral and digusting person.
When Mike was getting ready in the makeup room, abby has warned to read the script and not to say scatological words since the show is on air. Mike not observe what Abby talks, and make Abby angry, but Mike feel that Abby look beautiful even though she got angry, and then Mike delivers a compliment to Abby, he said that Abby is look pretty, Mike look at Abby while he laugh. Abby more angry,because Mike not listen her instruction. In this case, Mike gives a compliment to appearance, especially, the personal appearance by saying “you look pretty today”to Abby’s appearance.

Collin : wow, you look great.
Abby : oh, thanks.
Yeah, i was just dong the dishes.
like. Collin is neighbour, his house is beside of Abby’s house. Abby loved
Collin because, Abby think that Collin is her criteria, he is handsome, cool, and he has established jobs. Abby changes her appearance look more beautiful to make Collin interested.
Abby getting ready, she looks beautiful and she so happy, because she know that Collin will come to her house soon. She nervous and she has prepared what she want said to refused Collin’s invitation for go out together.
Before Mike told Abby to refused Collin, cause Collin corious to Abby. Finally, Abby heard the door is knocked out and she opens the door. Therefore, when Abby stands in front of him, spontaneously Collin delivers a compliment to Abby by saying, “wow!!, you look great”. Based on the explanation, the type of compliment is compliment of appearance. It deals with personal appearance as the complimented object is Abby’s overall
appearance.
b. Possession
Data : 8 ( 00:38:32/ in the office ) Abby : He lives with you?
Mike : Well next door, with my sister. He’s my nephew.
Abby : cute kid. Mike : Yeah.

low rating. Now Abby and Mike are friend, they do not hate each other like they used to. The conversation happens in the office, when they are break after show on television. In this part of movie, Abby has done her work as producer. Mike as a host of show he has done the show on tv. When Abby focus on camera, she has saw a little boy actually he is abby’s nephew.
“cute kid” of Mike’s nephew. This type of compliment is appearance,deals
with possession. The compliment is delivered to affirm solidarity to his nephew and to reinfoce good social relationship between them.
4.1.1.2. Compliment of Ability
Compliments concerning on ability are devided into two types:
a. General Ability
The compliment of general ability includes categorical reference to skill, talent, personal quality and taste. From all the data, the compliment of general ability are found in the compliment on skill, talent, personal quality, and taste of the personal qualities. The data that are classified to the compliments on the personal qualitifies are as follow:
Data : 1 (00:19:26/ Collin’s house ) Abby : Sorry, oh my God.
So you just moved in. That’s great. Collin : ‘No responds’ .... smile
Abby : I am Abby, by the way.
Collin : Your neighbour from across the way.
The conversation above happens in Collin’s living room. The
participant Abby and Collin. Collin takes Abby to his house. Collin gave a medical treatment to Abby’s ankle. In the part of movie, Collin helped Abby
catch her cat by climbing the tree. Then, she fell from the top of the tree. Abby cried for a help, and Collin hearing a loud cry, quickly he saved Abby and gave a medical treatment to Abyy who turned her ankle. Abby is in love to Collin at the first sight since Collin is the perfect man. Abby notices him and she opens the conversation, and Collin told how he moved beside the Abby’s house. Abby expresses her amazement to Collin by saying “That’s
great”. Abby admiration toward Collin is indicated as compliment to Abby.
