Background: Stable COPD is marked with various degrees of inflamation throughout large and small airways also in the alveoli which cause mucus hipersecretion, narrowing of the airway, and alveoli damage. Exacerbation is an episode of elevated inflamation. Relation between inflamation response and magnesium has been observed with the increase of pro – inflamation cytokines in magnesium deficiency.
Aim of Study: To identify the characteristics of patients with stable COPD and acute exacerbated COPD, and the levels of magnesium in stable COPD petients and acute exacerbated COPD.
Methode: Cross sectional study on 34 patients who came to RSUP H. Adam Malik (17 stable COPD patients and 17 acute exacerbated COPD patients) was conducted to examine serum magnesium level and spirometri in stable condition.
Results: Mean serum magnesium level for stable COPD patients group was adalah 2,09 ± 0,11 mEq/L higher than in the exacerbated COPD patients group 1,69 ± 0,27 mEq/L. Mann – Whitney statistical analysis showed significant difference in magnesium level between stable COPD and exacerbated COPD groups (p<0.05).
Conclusion: Serum magnesium level of the stable COPD patients group was significantly higher than serum magnesium level of the exacerbated COPD patients group.
