ABSTRACT

In this research, the writer describes the suitability of English textbook for the eleventh grade of Senior High School entitled BAHASA INGGRIS with the 2013 Curriculum. The type of this research is descriptive research. The object of this research are the text structure and the language features on every chapter in the textbook. There are 5 chapters in the textbook. In the first chapter, there are 11 materials that focus on the textbook. All of the materials are suitable with the 2013 Curriculum. The second chapter consists of 11 materials and they are suitable with the 2013 Curriculum. In the third chapter, there are 7 suitable materials and one unsuitable material. The fourth chapter, there are 7 materials which are suitable with the 2013 Curriculum and one unsuitable material. The last chapter, there are 8 materials that focus in the textbook and all of them are suitable. The total number of the materials that focus in the textbook are 44 materials. And the total number of the materials focus on the 2013 Curriculum are 46. The result of this research shows that there is 95,6% of the suitability of the BAHASA INGGRIS textbook.Finally, the writer concludes that the criteria of the textbook is Very Good. The textbook can be used by the students of the eleventh grade of Senior High School, although there are unsuitable materials in the third and fourth chapter.

ABSTRAK

Dalam penelitian ini, penulis mendiskripsikan kesesuaian antara buku pelajaran Bahasa Inggris untuk Sekolah Menengah Atas kelas XI berjudul BAHASA INGGRIS dengan Silabus Kurikulum 2013. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif. Objek penelitian ini adalah struktur teks dan tata bahasa di setiap bab dalam buku ini. Dalam buku ini terdapat 5 bab. Bab pertama, terdapat 11 materi pokok yang tertulis di buku. Semua materi dalam bab pertama sesuai dengan kurikulum 2013. Bab kedua terdiri dari 11 materi dan semua materi sesuai dengan kurikulum 2013. Dalam bab 3, terdapat 7 materi yang sesuai dengan kurikulum 2013 dan 1 materi yang tidak sesuai. Bab 4 terdapat 7 materi yang sesuai dengan kurikulum 2013 dan 1 materi yang tidak sesuai. Di bab terakhir, terdapat 8 materi yang dituliskan dalam buku dan semua materi di bab ini sesuai dengan kurikulum 2013. Jumlah semua materi di buku ini ada 44. Dan jumlah total materi dalam kurikulum 2013 adalah 46. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kriteria kesesuaian buku BAHASA INGGRIS adalah 95,6%. Penulis menyimpulkan bahwa kriteria buku ini adalah sangat baik. Buku ini dapat digunakan oleh siswa kelas XI SMA, meskipun terdapat beberapa materi yang tidak sesuai di bab 3 dan bab 4.

Introduction

In teaching-learning process, a book has an important role especially for the

teachers and the learners. It is used as guiding in teaching-learning process. Nunan (1985:2)

states that the present book is intended to provide teachers with the skill they need to

address in systematic fashion, the problem and the tasks which confront them in their

program in their programmed planning. The curriculum applied by the Indonesian

government nowadays is the 2013 Curriculum. The 2013 Curriculum is a new curriculum

that replaces the School Level-based Curriculum or in Indonesian it is called Kurikulum

Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan (KTSP). This curriculum has three assesments, they are

knowledge assesment, skill assesment, and attitude and behavior assesment. Suitability is

the quality of having the properties that are right for a specific purpose. In

teaching-learning process, teacher not only teaches the students but also has to select the books used

in teaching-learning process. The books are the most important thing needed by the teacher

in teaching-learning process. To get the success in teaching-learning process, the teacher

should select a book based on the curriculum. Although the textbook published by the

government of Indonesia, but there are some materials in the syllabus of 2013 curriculum

which are not written in the BAHASA INGGRIS textbook. In the third chapter, there are

some language features written in the syllabus, such “simple past tense”, “present perfect

tense”, and “present perfect continuous tense”. After reading this chapter, the writer cannot

find a phrase or a sentence which uses a present perfect continuous tense. Not only in the

third chapter, but in the fourth chapter also not written a material from syllabus. The text

structure of the syllabus contains two materials. They are “Menyebutkan tujuan undangan”

and “Menyebutkan informasi rinci undangan”. But the writer cannot find the goal of

invitation or Menyebutkan tujuan undangan in the fourth chapter. The objective of this

study is to describe the suitability of BAHASA INGGRIS textbook used at eleventh grade of

Research Method

In this research, the writer uses a descriptive research as a method of the research.

A descriptive research is a research that used to collect the complete data of something

related to the research object (Arikunto, 2006:86). The method involved ranging from the

survey which describes the status quo, the correlation study which investigates the relation

between variables, to developmental studies which seek to determine changes over time.

By using this method, the researcher analyzes the book of BAHASA INGGRIS as the 2013

Curriculum English textbook for the eleventh grade of Senior High School.

Research Finding and Discussion

1. Research Finding

Every textbook used in teaching-learning process must contain some materials

related with the syllabus. The BAHASA INGGRIS English textbook contains some

materials. In the first chapter of this book, the theme “Can greed ever be satisfied?”

represents the material of how to suggest, how to offer, and how to respond . This

chapter begins the material by giving a folklore entitled “The Enchanted Fish”. In the

folklore, there are many sentences that contained suggestions and offers. The second

chapter of this book contains a material of how to express opinions. Before starting the

lesson, the students are asked to discuss an article entitled “Bullying: A cancer that

must be eradicated” and give some opinions about it. Based on the theme of the

chapter, the third chapter contains some materials such how to express hopes, how to

congratulate, and how to write hopes and dreams. In the beginning of this chapter

The fourth chapter of this book learns how to write a formal invitation. Besides,

this book also contains the material of how to accept and decline invitations. In the

beginning, there is an activity for the students to read a play. Not only in the beginning,

there are also some activities in the end of this chapter. The students are asked to write

a formal invitation and create a diorama. The last chapter of this book is about writing

a personal letter. In this chapter, the book lets the students read a short story, learn to

write a personal letter, write a letter, create a skit and illustrate a scene from the story.

Chapter five begins the learning by giving a text entitled “Letter to GOD”. It is a short

story related to the personal letter. In this short story, there are two personal letters

written to the GOD.

2. Discussion

All of the materials in the BAHASA INGGRIS have been analyzed by the writer.

There are 5 chapters in the textbook. In the first chapter, there are 11 materials focus on

the textbook. All of the materials are suitable with the 2013 Curriculum. The second

chapter consists of 11 materials and they are suitable with the 2013 Curriculum. In the

third chapter, there are 7 suitable materials and an unsuitable material. The unsuitable

material is found in “Tata Bahasa”. Here, the Present Perfect Continuous Tense is not

written in the textbook. The fourth chapter, there are 7 materials which are suitable

with the 2013 Curriculum and an unsuitable material. The unsuitable material in this

chapter is found in “Struktur Teks”. In the 2013 Curriculum, the materials in the

“Struktur Teks” are the purpose of invitation and the detail information of invitation.

But the purpose of invitation is not written in the textbook.The last chapter, there are 8

analyzing the data, after comparing between the 2013 Curriculum and BAHASA

INGGRIS textbook, the last technique is concluding the result of the research.

As the writer has analyzed, the writer concludes the material both in the 2013

Curriculum and in the BAHASA INGGRIS textbook in the table below:

The writer uses the formula as stated by Arikunto (1992: 208) to score the degree

of compatibility. The formula is as follows:

To conclude the criteria of the textbook, the writer uses the percentage of

“Criterion Referenced Evaluation” as suggested by Nurgiyantoro (1987: 630). The

criteria of the BAHASA INGGRIS textbook with 95,6% of suitability is Very good.

Conclusion

After describing and analyzing the data, the writer can draw a conclusion based on

the result of the observation. There are 5 chapters in the BAHASA INGGRIS textbook. It

consists of 44 materials from chapter 1 till chapter 5. But, the materials written in the 2013

curriculum are 46 materials. So, there are 2 materials not written in the textbook. Based on

the data, the result of the textbook suitability is 95,6%. As suggested by Nurgiyantoro (1987: 630), the criteria of the BAHASA INGGRIS textbook with 95,6% of suitability is
