TRIBUTE PAID MISS KATZ FOR 50 YEARS OF FAITHFUL SERVICE One hundred and thirty-five admiring members of the IUSD family paid tribute to "Miss Katz'' on Friday evening, Janu- ary 14th as faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends gathered at the Union Building for dinner and an evening of acclaim and recognition of Miss Gertrude Katzenberger's 50 years of devoted ser- vice to IUSD.
Mrs. Ruth Chilton, accompanied on the piano by Mrs. Evelyn Buchanan, opened the program with a beautiful rendition of "The Lord's Prayer" as the invocation.
Following an excellent dinner, The Rippletones provided a musical program of old favorites. Mr. Scott and his staff had arranged for a printed pro- gram resembling a $50 bill and b~aring Miss Katz's smiling countenance. A beautiful golden nmoney tree", fashion- ed by Mrs. Lehman of the library staff and laden with legal tender leaves, served as the centerpiece for the speak- er's table. Dean Hine served as toast- master and representatives of the faculty,
staff and student body presented indivi- dualized views of Miss Katzenberger and her years of association with IUSD.
The student body was represented by Mr. David Avery, senior class president.
He related the student's appreciation of Miss Katz's efforts in their behalf, and presented to her an attractive orna- mental bell to replace the old school bell used to signal the end of a clini- cal period. He also gave her a mina- ture be 11 so she would have II a pair and a spare."
Dr. Harry Healey, the oldest full- time faculty member (in years of service) represented the faculty and reviewed the history of IUSD, especially that con- cerning the people who comprised the assisting staff fifty years ago. On
January 19, 1966
behalf of the faculty, he presented Miss Katz with a set of heavy bronze bookends which bear the IU seal.
The assisting staff was ably repre- sented by Mrs. Cleona Harvey. She show- ed slides of the buildings formerly oc- cupied by the dental school and pictures taken of Miss Katz at the time the
school was in each of the buildings.
The alumni particularly enjoyed Mrs.
Harvey's and Dr. Healey's presentations because they brought back many memories of their educational experiences. Alum- ni were present from all parts of the state and from nearly every year of Miss Katz's fifty years. Mrs. Harvey, on behalf of the assisting staff, pre- sented a magnificent gold vanity tray to Miss Katz.
Dr. Jerry Timmons, who served as Act- ing Dean of IUSD from 1938-1940, was present to represent the alumni. Dr.
Timmons, who now resides in Scottsdale, Arizona, provided a very humorous and interesting recollection of his memor- ies of the early history of the dental school and of "Gertie."
In addition to the large group in at- tendance, there were many who could not be present. The congratulatory messages from a large segment of this group were arranged in a book by Mr. Scott for pre- sentation to Miss Katz. Dr. Bogan, re- presenting the dental school administra-
tion, presented this book to her. Dean Hine expressed the appreciation of the entire dental school for Miss Katzen- berger1s fifty years of continued and devoted service.
When called upon to speak, Miss Katz was almost speechless, and what she did say was nearly obliterated by the spon- taneous applause.
Mrs. Chilton closed the evening with
MISS KATZ (continued) the singing of "Always," one of Miss Katz's favorites. This was indeed an evening to be long remembered, full of warmth, good fellowship and pleasant associations.

DENTAL DIVISION REPORTS ON NEW AND CONTINUING STUDIES
The Dental Division of the Indiana State Board of Health has begun a new study in Anderson, Indiana to deter- mine the effectiveness of dental health education teaching methods for elemen- tary school children, Approximately 550 third graders have been divided into three groups, two of which will be instructed using Proctor & Gamble classroom dental health education ma- terials. One of these two groups will be taught by a person who has received special inservice training in the use of the materials. The third group will serve as a control group with no spe- cialized materials or instruction being utilized. The criteria for measurement will be DMF and def indices, Russel's periodontal index and the simplified oral hygiene index. It will also be noted whether or not the child has visited a dentist during the study period.
The self-application/fluoride study in Frankfort is progressing at the rate of about 20 treatments per hour under the supervision of a dental hy- gienist. The advantage of such a pro- gram, if an effective compound can be found, is the large number of children which can be treated.
The new mobile dental unit has been completed and an open house for faculty and students is planned for early spring.
