OF INTEREST IN DENTAL DIVISION INDIANA STATE BOARD OF HEALTH

The Annual Conference on Dental Health, sponsored by the Council on Dental Health Education of the Indiana State Dental Association and the Dental Division, was held October 20 at the Speedway Motel. About 150 persons attended, including dentists, members of dental auxiliaries and school and public health nurses. Topics of discussion were: National Children's Dental Health Week programs, school and community dental health projects, dental prepayment and National dental care programs for children.

Plans are currently underway for two new clinical studies on self-

application of fluoride-containing compounds. This makes a total of four such studies which are being conducted in the area of self-application by the Dental Division and Department of Preventive Dentistry.

The annual dental caravan program conducted ·by the Dental Division for the purpose of relating current topics of dental importance to component dental societies will have its first program at an East Central Dental Society meeting on November 2. This year's program will relate information on government-sponsored health

programs of dental significance.

ORAL DIAGNOSIS

Dr. Mitchell recently made a trip to Bethesda, Maryland to lecture at the Naval Dental School there. His morning lecture was entitled, nRoentgenographic Interpretation and Misinterpretation,:

and an afternoon lecture was concerned with recent research. The afternoon lecture was televised over the Armed Forces station in Washington, D. C.

PREVENTIVE PROCEDURES SYMPOSIUM Dr. Charles Gish participated in a symposium on current dental health preventive procedures, held at Melvin Village, New Hampshire on October 17,

1966.

Dr. Gish delivered an address on the subject, ncommunity Dental Health Education Programs. 0 The conference, sponsored by the New Hampshire Dental Society and the Bureau of Public Health, was attended

by dentists, school and public health nurses and lay people interested in dental health.

NIDR AWARD TO DR. TCHALIAN

As a recipient of a traineeship award from the National Institute of Dental Research, Dr. Varoujan Tchalian

attended the Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic, October

at which time a short course program was conducted on the subject 0f "Rehabilitation of Ore,l-Facial Communicative Disorders."

Mr. E. H. Burke of London, England was a visitor to the Maxillofacial Prosthetics Clinic on October 17-18.

FORT WAYNE DH PROGRAM TO BE REVIEWED

On Wednesday, November 2nd, a committee representing the Council on Dental Education of the American Lental Association will visit the Fort Wayne Regional Campus for the purpose of reviewing the dental hygiene program.

NEWS FROM DENTAL MATERIALS

A new name, though not a new face ~ has been added to the staff of Dental Materials. Miss Freda Sherrill was married to Dr. Max C. Burke on Thursday, October 20,

1966.

The couple took

a week's wedding trip and Mrs. Burke returned to her duties on Monday,

October 31st. Best wishes are extended.

Miss Hazel Clark has been appointed as a research assistant in the Department of Denta.l Materials. She holds a Bachelor's Degree from Evansville College and a Master's Degree from Ball State. Before joining the dental school staff, she taught mathematics and chemistry in the high school of Selma, Indiana.

Mrs. Charlotte Sears left the department as of November 1~

1966.

She plans to join her husband who is stationed in Germany with the U. S. Army.

A long letter was received fron Wally Chong who worked in the Department of Dental Materials for four years while attending IUSD. He is now stationed with a Beebee battalion in Danang, Viet Nam. needless to say, he would prefer to be back among his friends, either here or in his native Hawaii.

He would enjoy hearing from interested associates. He may be addressed as follows: Lt. Wallace F. Chong, USNR DC, NMCB-9, Dental, c/o Fleet Post Office, San Francisco, California.

HOUSEKEEPING DEPARTMENT NEWS Wedding bells rang for Samueletta,

Williams, fourth floor housekeeper!, and Robert Williams on October 20th.

Samueletta's co-workers, Gladolia Green and Emma Allen, were hostesses for a Kitchen Shower on October 14th.

Sa.mueletta and Robert wish to thank their many friends for the beautiful wedding gifts.

RADIOLOGY DEPARTMENT Mrs. Isa Poor would like to thank everyone for all the cards and flowers she received during the recent illness and death of her father, John Soyars.

MRS. CAMPBELL ON EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF MRG/MLA

Mrs. Helen Campbell, School of Dentistry librarian, has accepted the recommen- dation of the nominating committee of the ~.idwest Regional Group of the Medical Library Association, which has placed her name on the slate of officers as a member of the Executive Committee.

Her term will be for three years, from the Fall of

1966

until the Fall of

1969.

NEW. MEMBER WELCOMED TO LIBRARY STAFF Mrs. Kathleen Schwartz has joined the staff of the IUSD library on a part- time basis. She replaces Mrs. Jane King who left in mid-October to join 'her husband in Buffalo, New York.

Mrs. Schwartz holds her M.S. degree in Library Science from Drexel. Before coming to Indiana with her family, she worked in New Jersey in the Haddonfield Public Library and in the Cherry Hill Public Library.

PEDODONTIC ITEMS OF INTEREST

The Pedodontic Undergraduate Staff held a meeting on Wednesday evening,

October 26th, at the home of Dr. Myron Kasle.

Dr. Ralph McDonald attended a meeting of the dental section of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation which was held in Chicago on October 27th. The Committee, representing the Big Ten Schools and the University of Chicago, is developing a plan for an exchange of graduate students and faculty, and a greater utilization of unique research faci1ities among the schools.

NEWS FROM THE DEAN'S OFFICE

We are advised that Mrs. Ruth Lively is continuing to improve daily. We look forward to her return.
