The aim of the research was to determine whether there is a relationship between students' anxiety and the continuity of undergraduate thesis writing of the English Department at IAIN Metro. The population of this research was students who were writing an undergraduate thesis of the English Department at IAIN Metro.

Background Of Study

In this research, the researcher believes that students' problems in writing an undergraduate thesis can originate from internal and external reasons. So the researcher was interested in conducting a research entitled: ―The Correlation Between Students' Anxiety And Continuity Writing Undergraduate Thesis Of English Department At IAIN Metro‖.

Problem Identification

From what the researchers saw, the subject seemed to be experiencing anxiety and was unsure of the abilities he possessed. Based on the above background, the researcher was interested in investigating the relationship between student anxiety and undergraduate thesis writing.

In addition, the other prior research conducted by Utami fauziyah is entitled "The Relationship Between Students' Anxiety And Their English Reading Skill".6 The language skill studied in her research is reading. Although L2 writers have mastered some words and structures of the target language, they are still somewhere along the way in their learning process of adding new knowledge and becoming more fluent in that knowledge.

The desire on the part of the writer to communicate something is very important because it is much more difficult for students to write about something they have no interest in.

Anxiety

The Nature Of Anxiety

While those who just want to finish the assigned task, their learning strategies will mainly be based on telling and remembering knowledge. Moreover, writing anxiety is said to have a negative impact on both students' motivation20 and their academic performance. The data identified a number of causes that may have contributed to the students' writing anxiety, such as lack of written feedback, negative verbal criticism, working under time pressure, and writing about difficult topics.

While according to Passer and Smith, anxiety is the condition of grip and tension that is like a natural response to feel threatened.22 It means that anxiety arises naturally when someone is threatened by a specific situation. In addition, Halgin and Whitbourne stated anxiety as a cause of people's attempts to avoid the unpleasant response that disturbs people to enjoy many ordinary situations.23 People become anxious when they try to avoid unpleasant situations in their lives. Conolly and friends stated that anxiety is a common feeling of worry and fear and is a normal part of one's development, but it can become a problem when he/she adds to or interferes with daily life.24 Every people has this reaction and they must be professionals in controlling such reaction.

In addition, Hilgard and his colleagues defined anxiety as a psychological construct that is described as a state of fear, an indefinite fear that is only indirectly related to an object.25 Another expert claims that anxiety is an adaptive response, described by the feeling of fear, in specific a situation that can motivate and sometimes become.

Indicators Of Anxiety

Perhaps they will be nervous and anxious when they are not finished, while their other friends who are working on repairs are finished and will continue to the next stage. For example, the counselor has high expectations and students must meet the counselor's high standards. This can affect the students in the work with revisions by the adviser, because they will be more focused on the expectations of others, the supervisor's expectations that the students can finish the thesis well.

Finally, Avoidance Behavior Avoidance behavior in general is the anxiety that deals with the behavior of students to avoid writing in English. Avoidance behavior refers to 28 where students avoid writing a thesis, which is the behavioral aspect of the experience of anxiety. This is the most dangerous because if the students avoid writing the thesis, correcting or guiding with the tutor, it can not make any changes and progress in the thesis like other friends if they do nothing in their thesis.

Anxiety is not new, it has existed as long as students have been writing in English.

Anxiety And Foreign Learning

For example, students do not work on their thesis for several months or do not do the corrections they receive from their tutor. Students sometimes do not believe in their abilities because there is no more preparation before writing in English. Gardner said that anxiety is an influential constraint on achievement in a second/foreign language, that the feeling of fear would interfere with language achievement.

He added that people who become anxious achieve lower levels of achievement than people who do not become anxious.30 The terms Language Anxiety and Foreign Language Anxiety are often used interchangeably by many linguists. As stated by Horwirtz, Foreign Language Anxiety is a multifaceted concept from the uniqueness of the language learning process consisting of difficulty in authentic self-perception and different language teaching practices.31 In contrast to other experts, Scovel argued that it is still premature to link anxiety to the global and comprehensive task in language acquisition, because he felt that there is much incomplete research on the correlation between anxiety and language ability.32 However, many researchers agreed that anxiety has influenced language learning and language performance, in this case reading, as Mohammadi said. by Onwuegbuzie, Bailey and Daley's.33 In addition, Na also agreed that affective factors such as attitudes, motivation and anxiety are highly considered for successful language. In a sense, the dependent variable "depends" on the independent variable.3 The independent variable in this research is student anxiety. Hatch and Lazarton stated that dependent variable is the most important variable that would be measured in the research. Dependent variable is a variable that can be improved with an independent variable.4 The dependent variable in this research is continuity writing of bachelor thesis.

A population was an individual or group that represents all the members of a certain group or category of interest.5 The population of this research were all students writing undergraduate thesis from the English department at IAIN Metro. The sample in this research is undergraduate thesis writing students from the English department at IAIN Metro. In conducting the research to get the sample from population, the writer uses the random sampling technique.

General Description of Research Data

Based on the data above, it can be described that the total score of questionnaire of 30 students as the sample using simple sampling technique is 1428, where the highest score is 57, the average score is 48 and the lowest score is 40. degree of continuity writing undergraduate thesis, the author gave the data of questionnaire to students writing undergraduate thesis. Based on the data above, it can be described that the total score of questionnaire of 30 students as the sample using simple sampling.

In short, it can be concluded that the result of the continuation of the questionnaire to write the university thesis is average. The writer analyzed the data using Pearson correlation product moment analysis to prove whether there is a positive and significant correlation between students' anxiety and the persistence of undergraduate thesis writing of the department of English in IAIN Metro. The critical value of the ―r test‖ between students' anxiety and the continuation of university thesis writing was 0.650 and lies between 0.60-0.80.

Therefore, it can be inferred that there is strong and high correlation between students' anxiety and continuity writing undergraduate thesis of the English department at IAIN Metro‖.
