Problem Formulation

It is expected that this research will benefit English teachers in the form of inspiration to use effective teaching techniques in teaching reading. This research can provide English teachers with information in the form of effective efforts in teaching reading.

Prior Research

That is because the application of the cloze procedure is very effective to use in teaching reading. Therefore, considering some of the previous research, researchers have a solid foundation to increase reading comprehension among tenth graders at Senior High School 6 Metro using the cloze procedure technique by implementing Classroom Action Research (CAR).

The Concept of Reading Comprehension 1. The Nature of Reading Comprehension

  • The Purpose of Reading
  • Component of Reading
  • Reading Instructions
  • Reading Assessment

Based on the above definition, the researcher concludes that comprehension is the ability to understand the text based on the background knowledge of the reader. McNamara explains that reading comprehension is a product of complex interactions between the properties of the text and what readers bring to the reading situation.10 In other words, reading comprehension is an interaction between words and how readers produce knowledge outside of the text.

The Benefits of Cloze Procedure

The cloze procedure can be useful at any grade level if the pattern of deletions is sensitive to the language proficiency of the students. The closing procedure helps the teacher to quickly see if the students understand the language used in the material in question, the scoring should be quick and efficient.

Action Plan

Classroom Action Research

In this case, the researcher conducted classroom action research in the tenth grades of Senior High School 6 Metro. 4 Jean McNiff and Jack Whitehead, Action Research: Principles and Practice, (New York: Routledge Falmer, 2002) Second edition, 41.

The Steps in the Research

In the second phase, the researcher collaborated to carry out the action arranged in the planning phase. In addition, the researcher also collected data from the post-test and the result of the student's activity.

Data Collecting Technique

  • Test
  • Observation
  • Documentation
  • Field Note

In this case, documentation is needed by the researcher to get the complete data about the stabilization history of Senior High School 6 Metro, the organizational structure of Senior High School 6 Metro, the names of teachers in each subject. In this research, the researcher used field notes to record the student's activity during the learning process.

Instrument of the Research 1. Reading Test Questions 1.Reading Test Questions

Observation Sheet

The content of the documentation sheet includes student reading worksheet, student files and profile, course outlines, lesson plans, classroom materials. In this case, the researcher needs documentation to get the full details of the founding history of Senior High School 6 Metro, the organizational structure of Senior High School 6 Metro.

Data Analysis

Indicators of Success

Description of Senior High School 6 Metro

However, in 2013, Senior high school 6 Metro was formally given the status of a national school and Adiwiyata. Creating the students of Senior High School 6 Metro who has good morale, good knowledge and good performance.

Mission of the School

Description of the Research

Source: The results of the pre-reading test for tenth graders of the 6 Metro Senior High School on September 19, 2019. Successful students were those who achieved the minimum mastery of the English subject at the 6 Metro Senior High School at least 75. From the pre-test result, the researcher obtained an average 55.63, so the result was unsatisfactory.

In the planning phase, the researcher and the collaborator prepared several things related to the teaching and learning process, such as, prepared a lesson plan, made an instrument that would be checked as a posttest in cycle I, prepared materials, made an observation sheet of students' activities, identified the problem and found the causes of the problem at the beginning and end of the learning activity. The researcher also designed an assessment to measure students' knowledge of the given materials.

Acting

While the students were completing their text, the researcher walked around the class and observed how they were working. At the end of the meeting, the researcher gave feedback to the students about the learning process. The researcher motivated the students and introduced them to the activities at the next meeting.

The investigator began the lesson with prayers, greetings, checking the attendance list, and asking about the students' condition. Source: Student activity in 10th graders of Senior High School 6 Metro on October 3, 2019.

Planning

The investigator began to greet the class, pray, check the attendance record, and ask the students' condition. The researcher gave the students a descriptive text from a book in which a number of words have been deleted. The researcher asks the students to guess and predict words to be filled in the text.

Students need to understand the text, for example finding specific information from a descriptive text. After two treatments in Cycle II, the researcher gave the students a post-test.

Observing

Based on the above result, we could conclude that 20 students (83.3%) were successful, while 4 other students (16.7%) were unsuccessful. Source: Senior High School 6 Metro Student Activities on October 17, 2019. The student activity that had a high percentage was students who understood the text read 87.5%, then students ask/answer closing questions 79 .1%.

Based on the result above, the researcher indicated that the learning process in cycle II was successful because the students' activity got a percentage >70%.

Reflecting

From the table above, it can be seen that the scores of the students in the post-test II were different. It means that the success indicator of this research was achieved which was >70% of the students got the result of 75. Regarding the above result, it can be concluded that this Classroom Action Research (CAR).

It was successful and it would not be continued in the next cycle because the learning process and the product of learning completely passed the indicators of success.

Interpretation

The Result of Students Learning

It was seen that the scores of the students on post-test II were diverse. Comparison of score in Pre-Test, Post-Test I in Cycle I and Post-Test II in Cycle II. The comparison score of reading comprehension from pre-test, post-test I in cycle I and post-test II in cycle II.

Comparison of students' results before the test, the result after test I in cycle I and the result after test II in cycle II. Comparative result of students' reading comprehension in the pre-exam, after test I in cycle I and after test II in cycle II.

The Result of Students’ Learning Activities in Cycle I and Cycle II The students‘ learning activities data was gotten from the whole

Students understood the read text from the first session to the next session. The number of students asking/answering the closed process question increased from the first session to the next. Based on the above data, it can be concluded that the students are able to decide which words are missing because most of the students made good progress in reading comprehension when the Cloze Procedure technique was used in the learning process from I to II. d) Students are able to complete the close procedure task.

Based on the explanation of cycle I and cycle II, it could then be deduced that the use of cloze procedure technique increases students' reading comprehension. Based on the results of the preliminary study, it can be inferred that there was an increase in the average score and the total number of students who passed the test from pre-test, post-test I to post-test II.

Discussion

The researcher used this technique to identify students' knowledge and understanding of the reading process. Therefore, it is proven that the implementation of the closing procedure technique increases the learning activities of the students. Based on the explanation of Cycle I and Cycle II, it can be shown that using the Cloze procedure technique can increase students' reading comprehension.

It is inferred that there is an improvement in the students' total scores and total scores for the students who passed at least from pre-test, post-test I to post-test II. This means that the result of cycle II had already achieved the indicator of success, which was that 70% of the students achieved the minimum mastery criteria (MMC).
