NEW MEXICO STATE EXPORTS

# In 1999, New Mexico’s goods exports were $3.1 billion, up 1,055 percent ($2.8 billion) from 1992. During 1999, New Mexico was the 32nd largest state exporter of goods.

# In 1999, New Mexico’s jobs supported by goods exports were an estimated 754 percent (29,413 jobs) higher than 1992.

U.S. jobs supported by goods exports pay 13 to 16 percent higher than the national average wage.

# In 1991, the latest year available, New Mexico exports accounted for 20.7 percent of its manufacturing output and represented 14.5 percent of its total manufacturing employment.

# New Mexico’s exports of manufactured products were up by 663 percent between 1993 and 1999 (from $393.8 million in 1993 to $3.0 billion in 1999).

# The five largest manufacturing sectors in terms of New Mexico’s exports were: Electronic and Electric Equipment ($2.7 billion of exports in 1999), Petroleum and Coal Products ($69.0 million), Industrial Machinery and Computers ($53.3 million), Transportation Equipment ($51.8 million) and Scientific and Measuring Instruments ($42.8 million). These five sectors accounted for 95 percent of the state’s total exports in 1999. The Electronic and Electric Equipment category accounted by itself for 88 percent of the states’ total exports in 1999.

# New Mexico is the country’s 41st largest agricultural exporting state, shipping $74 million in agricultural exports abroad in FY 1999.

# Total exports from New Mexico to NAFTA countries in 1999 were 25 percent higher than 1993 (pre-NAFTA), to

$205.9 million in 1999. During 1999, Canada was New Mexico’s sixth largest export market, while Mexico was New Mexico’s fifth largest export market. Exports to Canada in 1999 were 47 percent ($26.8 million) higher than 1993, to

$83.4 million in 1999. Exports to Mexico in 1999 were 13 percent ($13.9 million) higher than 1993, to $122.5 million in 1999.

# In 1999, total exports from New Mexico to Japan were 11 percent ($3.9 million) lower than 1993, to $32.1 million in 1999. During 1999, Japan was New Mexico’s 14th largest export market.

# In 1999, total exports from New Mexico to the European Union were 175 percent ($139 million) higher than 1993, to

$218.8 million in 1999.

# In 1999, New Mexico exported $57.1 million to South/Central America and the Caribbean (excluding Mexico), $2.2 billion to the Pacific Rim (excluding Japan and China) and nearly $1.4 million to SubSaharan Africa.

# In 1999, New Mexico exported $214.1 million to China, its fourth largest export market.
