IMPLEMENTING AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT ON STUDENTS’ ENGLISH WRITING (A Case Study in One of Senior High Schools in Tasikmalaya).

IMPLEMENTING AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT ON STUDENTS’ ENGLISH WRITING (A Case Study in One of Senior High Schools in Tasikmalaya).

The development of curriculum has resulted the shift in the assessment aspect. Nowadays, the era of traditional assessment, particularly in the form of multiple-choice and other standardized test type, has been replaced by nontraditional so-called alternative or authentic assessment. This kind of assessment is still unfamiliar among teachers particlularly for they who do not develop their knowledge and understanding. O’Maley and Pierce (1996) In authentic assessment, what the teachers should produce is the assessment tasks that reflect their students’ learning, achievement, motivation and attitudes toward the classroom instructional activities. Moreover, the interrelation between instruction and assessment makes it impossible to work without the collaboration between them. As a result, the process of assessment cannot be separated with the teaching learning process. Bennu and Purnomo (2009) The assessment is a part of the teaching and learning. Hence, it makes language assessment as a complicated work. In this case, teachers should go through the process of assessing writing skill elaboratedly in instuctional process.

CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION - Students’ perception of English as a Medium of instruction in teaching English at senior high schools in Palangka Raya - Digital Library IAIN Palangka Raya

English in Indonesian is only a foreign language (EFL), not a second language (ESL). 3 However, English is only a special foreign language usually taught as a subject in schools. The fact that the Indonesian language is also an important language (not just a vernacular) dominating important functions such as political, economic, academic, social, etc. In Indonesian society certainly can impose a barrier towards efforts in acquiring the English language. 4 Should English as a medium of instruction be implemented, students and teachers are likely to get exposure to English as comprehensible input and opportunity to use English as comprehensible output only in the classroom, while the general atmosphere (macrocosm) may act as a pressure against it? 5

THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SCIENTIFIC METHOD IN TEACHING ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE AT SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL.

THE IMPLEMENTATION OF SCIENTIFIC METHOD IN TEACHING ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE AT SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL LEVEL.

The integration of scientific method in teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL) in Indonesia has become a controversial issue as the 2013 Curriculum requires teachers to follow each step of scientific method in the classroom practice. Since some experts believe that there is no literature in the history of TEFL/SL that supports the use of scientific-based learning to teach English, EFL teachers, particularly at schools using the 2013 Curriculum in Indonesia, are faced with a dilemmatic condition where they need to follow the recent curriculum demand. In relation to this issue, the present study attempts to portray the teacher’s effort in conducting EFL classroom practice by following each step of scientific method. Involving an English teacher and 30 students of eleventh grade majoring in Science class, the researcher employed classroom observation, interview, and questionnaire form to collect the data in a case study to explore (1) whether or not the teacher is able to implement scientific method to EFL classroom practice; (2) how the teacher interprets scientific method; and (3) the studentsperception towards scientific -based learning activity. The collected data result in findings that (1) scientific method could not seemingly be applied by the teacher effectively since she only executed three or four steps out of five steps of scientific method in the classroom process but it somehow bore an indication of potential contribution to the students’ participation, confidence, and critical thinking; (2) the teacher was able to define five stages of scientific method and aware of the benefit and challenge of using scientific method although she misinterprets scientific method as a similar learning model developed in the previous curriculum; (3) scientific method is also perceived positively by the Science class students to be a useful method to improve their interest, confidence, critical thinking, and communication skill. However, the effect of scientific method to students’ language skills w as not really given careful attention due to limitations of the study. Thus, this study might be the window for further studies to explore the potential benefit and challenge of scientific method in teaching EFL students, particularly for senior high school level.

Students’ perception of English as a Medium of instruction in teaching English at senior high schools in Palangka Raya - Digital Library IAIN Palangka Raya

The writer takes some previous studies as the comparison and guidance of this research. The first is, the research done by Karunakaran Thirunavukkarsu studiedabout “Reintroduction of EMI in Sri Langka” the research found that main aspect of the way in which English is used as medium of instruction is that in government schools some subjects are taught in English while some other subjects are taught in Tamil. This helps the students be balanced bilinguals because they constantly learn their first language while acquiring mastery in L2. Eventually, it is assumed that this will facilitate the additive bilingualism and children would be balanced bilinguals. This paper tried to appraise the potential success of one decade – long English medium program and also see the different perspectives of the stakeholders involved in the English medium education. This study captured the views of parents, teachers and children: English medium and vernacular children. 1

STUDENTS’ PERCEPTION ON THE TEACHERS’ USE OF ENGLISH AT AN EFL CONTEXT: a Case Study at One State Senior High School in Yogyakarta.

97 Second, concerning the influences of the teachers’ use of English to classroom interaction, the observation result shows that most students were active, serious, and enjoying during teaching and learning process in the classroom. This data was supported by the interview showing that most of the students responded positively to the active use of English by their English teachers. They are also highly appreciative to the teachers. They finished their task and submitted to the teachers in time. They performed in front of the class cheerfully although they sometimes still communicated with their English teachers in Indonesian language. From the classroom observation, it can be concluded that the active teachers’ use of English gave most of the students positive influence on their activeness in the class, strong desire to learn, enjoyment, emotion, respect to their teachers, self confidence, skillful in critical thinking, and on their skill in solving problem. Although a variety of variables may be at play, these facts seem to be influenced partly by the teachers’ use of English. This is confirmed by the students’ claim in the interview.

This problem becomes a basic reason of why students only accept minimum supports to write a good text. Students mostly deal with theories but less practice on how to use the skill. Yet, Indonesian students face a lot of text genre to be learned such as: Recount, Narrative, Procedure, Exposition, Description, and report (National Curriculum, 2004). Moreover, the text type focused in this study is Narrative.

A. Background of the Study - Students’ perceptions of english as a medium of instruction in the English class of english education study program at IAIN Palangka Raya - Digital Library IAIN Palangka Raya

There is a fast-moving worldwide shift from English being taught as a foreign language (EFL) to English being the medium of instruction (EMI) for academic subjects such as science, mathematics, geography and medicine. EMI is increasingly being used in universities, secondary schools and even primary schools. This phenomenon has very important implications for the education of young people and policy decisions in non-Anglophone countries. Yet little empirical research has been conducted into why and when EMI is being introduced and how it is delivered. What are the consequences of introducing EMI on teaching, learning, assessing, and teacher professional development? 2

S ING 1202580 Chapter1

In teaching and learning a foreign language in Indonesian educational context, both English teacher and students need teaching materials and learning resources. Majid (2008) defines teaching materials as all forms of materials used to assist the teachers or instructors in carrying out teaching and learning in the classroom. Meanwhile, learning resources are all places, environments, or media that can provide information and can help students in learning. In some cases, the teachers and the students usually use a textbook which has been available in the schools as their learning materials in the classroom. It is because the textbook which is considered may contain teaching guides, reference books, and supplementary reading materials (Heyneman, 2006, p. 37). However, the teacher should use the textbook appropriately so that it can support the learning activities.

THE INFLUENCE OF STUDENT ENGAGEMENT AND TEACHERS’ PERFORMANCE TO STUDENTS’ SATISFACTION IN PUBLIC SENIOR HIGH SCHOOLS IN BANDUNG (INDONESIA).

Several studies argue that the use of new technologies in education is essential for providing opportunities for students to learn to operate in an information age (era). Nowadays integrating ICT in learning is one of the indicators and part of teacher’s performance which will lead to student satisfaction. It is evident as Yelland (2007) argued that traditional educational environment do not seem to be suitable for preparing students to function or be productive in today’s society workplaces. She claims that organizations or schools that do not incorporate the use of new technologies cannot seriously claim to prepare their students for life in the twenty-first century. This argument is supported by many authors who hold that by teaching ICT skills at primary schools the pupils are prepared to face the future developments based on proper understanding.
